3 On 3 Hockey To Be Tried In Exhibition Games

This year the NHL has decided that every team will get to experience 3 on 3 hockey for the first time in hockey history. I got to see some 3 on 3 hockey in the Habs-Pitts game in London last Fri. in the Habs OT loss, and I must say that, IMO, it is exciting. However, I do see a problem with it. During the "regular 5 on 5 game" you cannot have less that 3 players on the ice at any time. So what happens if one of those players in the 3 on 3, gets a penalty? Do they still get the penalty? Anyway,,, here's the full article:

I'm guessing they will go to 4 on 3 until the first whistle after the penalty expires.

3-on-3 overtime to be tested in preseason games.

The National Hockey League has designated certain games on its upcoming 2015 preseason schedule in which the participating teams will test and practice the new ‘3-on-3’ overtime format. This is done in order to ensure that players, coaches and officials have at least a minimum of exposure to the new overtime format, and that they have a chance to practice the new format before the beginning of the regular season.

Here is a list of the 3 preseason games the Canadiens will play that will feature a five-minute, sudden-death, 3-on-3 overtime period – regardless of the score at the end of regulation time:

TUESDAY, SEPT. 22
Toronto at Montreal, 7:30 PM

SATURDAY, SEPT. 26
Montreal at Toronto, 7:30 PM

SATURDAY, OCT. 3
Montreal at Ottawa, 7:00 PM
