HabsRuleForever
The Montreal Canadiens have traded Devante Smith-Pelly to the New Jersey Devils for Stefan Matteau.
jedimaas
Interesting deal. Similar players - so probably more about scenery changes. I havent watched as much of Matteau as i have DSP but my gut is that Smith Pelly is probably a better skater but Matteau has better vision. If nothing else we turned a player who was likely not going to be in our future into one who just might. Plus we've added 2 french speaking players in the last couple of days & the rumor is we are considering moving on from DD so overall positives to be taken today. habs_93
DSP simply wasn't a fit on the lineup, so moving on from him is a good thing in my mind. Matteau may or may not be an improvement, but we've at least got a bit more potential now.

Guest habs1952
Taller than DSP and a little lighter at 15S 6lb. The trade certainly didn't hurt us and we could still come out as winners.
BigTed3
This is a low-key deal whereby the most likely scenario is that the deal doesn't help or hurt either team very much in the long run. But I also like the idea behind the trade. There was clearly no space for DSP here next year, so why not take a flier on another player who might benefit from a change of scenery. Matteau was a player I'm sure the Habs considered in his draft year, now they have a chance to work with him. I really don't think we would have offered a contract to DSP for next season, so the way I see it is that we have a low-risk move here with some potential for return. Habberwacky
DSP had some moments, but like many of the players this year he had long stretches where he did not produce. First and second liners can get away with that, 3rd and 4th liners cannot. I thought we really stopped playing physical hockey during December and January and it appears Bergevin noticed. DSP had the same number of hits as Patches and was about 6th on the team behind some players who are still injured. Not sure we gto him to be a checker without the phsysical presence. jedimaas
watching his post-trade interview (he was still wearing a habs cap!!) he was sure upset. I feel bad for him but clearly he wasnt a great fit here. Interestingly, it sure makes it seem like the team is a strong group still. Will be interesting to see how they bounce back next season. Therrien still has 19 games to change that.
