NHL Draft 2016

My choices

1. Calgary

2. Toronto

3. Montreal

Right now, the first three picks seem to be pretty set in the order of Matthews, Laine, Puljujarvi. I'd be happy with any of them, although Laine is obviously the guy with the biggest intrigue right now based on recent performance. I still think Matthews wins out in the draft, but all three of these guys should be in the NHL next year.

I hate to say this but I did not want to see us move up and have the incompetence of the Order of the Beard rewarded. We did not deserve it. As much as I despise the Leafs they have a plan and now the means to a bright future. We have the 3 stooges! I almost don't care who we pick anymore because it will be mismanaged and poorly coached, no matter what level of the organization is involved.

LOL! Leafs win the lottery! Hahahaha  .

Is the lottery rigged  ? Hosted in a pro-Leafs studio in TOR..... But congrats anyway, Leafs have a real asset to work with now.

Leafs look like a really good team right now.... I don't think they really need Stamkos. Right now their future is looking much better than ours

Definitely less likely the Leafs go after Stamkos now....... (which means "other" ;) teams just moved up in "that" lottery B)

& hmm.... Mr #1 pick didn't seem very excited about TO picking #1.... he said.... "mixed emotions right now".

A couple of thoughts:

- The draft was not rigged for us in any way then. We still don't have any explanation for the "undisclosed reasons why we had to take John Scott."

- Shanahan stated that the Leafs "earned this draft pick the hard way." On the one hand, they didn't really earn anything. But on the other, it's certainly true that they tanked the right way. They didn't cling on to a bad coach, they didn't hold on to veteran players and play them over rookies, they didn't try to win just to partially save face. They are actually re-building and doing it the right way, because they have the right management and coaching in place, the right system, and the right philosophy. Stark contrast to what we're doing here.

No way he gets past 6. We could trade with Edmonton at 4 and pick him up. It would make sense. I think we have 2 seconds

It will be tough but if the Oil and one or two others take a D-man and Arizona takes Tkachuk a second or third may be all we need to move up a couple of spots. Unless we go after the Oilers 4th, but I think we have a good shot at only needing to move two or three places.

Habs are building stability by being mediocre every year

This being said, despite subpar results this season, stability in our approach remains the focus. The mark of all good organizations in sports is stability and long-term vision. I remain convinced that we have a strong foundation of core players and veterans, as well as younger players with promising futures

Stability in the approach? So the plan is to rely far too heavily on Carey Price again, and pray to the hockey gods that he stays healthy? The approach isn't working, that's the problem

Next yr will be another painful yr

In terms of order, it's pretty clear Matthews, Laine, and Puljujarvi go 1-2-3, likely in that order. Dubois, Tkachuk, and Nylander are the next group of three, but as has been said, Edmonton is likely willing to go with a defenceman and might possibly be willing to trade down now that they're out of the top 3. But from their end, they could easily opt to trade down to 6,7, or 8 as well and grab the D man of their choice rather than waiting until 9 and getting the leftover guy. In any case, if you believe that the 6 forwards I have listed above all go in the top 8 (which they in theory should), then it means that we will have at least one of the following 3 D men available: Chychrun, Juolevi, and Sergachev. Would have to believe Edmonton favors Chychrun out of those three players, but I'd also believe Arizona (since they're not in the running for Matthews any more) and Buffalo would be willing to draft D men and I'm not sure they try to move up for Dubois or Tkachuk. I'm also not sure Edm would be willing to deal with Van or Cal, and I don't know that they move down all the way to 9 unless we're giving them something like Beaulieu as part of the trade. I think Edmonton maybe tries to trade the pick for an established young defenceman and a lower 1st rounder instead, but for now let's assume they keep the pick and take best player available. So how I could see it shaking out:

1. Tor - Matthews

2. Wpg - Laine

3. Clb - Puljujarvi

4. Edm - Dubois

5. Van - Tkachuk

6. Cal - Chychrun

7. Ari - Juolevi

8. Buf - Nylander

9. Mtl Sergachev

Down the draft, Kieffer Bellows, RIley Tufte, and Julien Gauthier are players who interest me as well, but I think when you're in the top 10, you need to make sure you're getting an immediate-help piece if you're trading down (i.e. I wouldn't trade it for a lower 1st and a 2nd).

I definitely wouldn't trade PK but honestly if we don't turn it around next year (which would require dropping some salary and picking up some UFAs OR young guys really taking the next step OR a combination of both) I would seriously consider an all out rebuild. We're just spinning our wheels right now. I'm interested to see if MB is capable of getting rid of some contracts
