2016-17 If I Were GM...

Let's talk cap management and specifically, whether the Habs can actually find a way to squeeze a key free agent like Steven Stamkos under the limit. If we do manage to sign him, let's project a potential like-up like this (just an example and assuming no other moves):

Pacioretty-Stamkos-McCarron

Andrighetto-Galchenyuk-Gallagher

Eller-Plekanec-Carr

Danault-Mitchell-Byron

Flynn, Desharnais

For sakes of this evaluation, we'll say we re-up Carr, Danault, and Andrighetto for the same cap hits as last year (and really, we don't owe any of those guys any more money than last year at this point). That means that without Stamkos, we're shelling out 27.2M for the other 13 forwards.

On D, let's project

Beaulieu-Subban

Markov-Petry

Emelin-Pateryn

Barberio

For those 7 guys, that will cost us 26.75M assuming Barberio re-ups for a similar deal.

And in goal, if we go with Price and Condon, it will cost us 7.075M. Tack on 1.33M for the PAP buyout, and that means that we have already devoted 61M to 22 players. The expected salary cap should be around 70.8M, meaning we should have about 9.8M to work with to sign Stamkos.

At the very least, we should be able to afford an Okposo or a top 4 defenceman, but if the plan is to get Stamkos (which it should be), we can expect to have to shell out 10-11M a year. Yes, we would have been better off not having signed Byron and Flynn and just going with two minimum-wage players... that in itself could have saved us a million dollars and put us into Stamkos range. But barring that, the situation is not so dire. It means we really only need to rid ourselves of one of Markov, Emelin, Desharnais, or Plekanec. If I'm MB, that should be doable.

  • 3 weeks later...

We didn't need Yandle as a priority, but if his contract (7 years at 6.35M from Florida) is setting the market for defencemen, it's going to be an awful awful summer. That's a horrific deal to give out to an aging defenceman who will be 26 when this ends and who has a NMC clause for the first 6 years and a limited NTC for the last one. It also means he has to be one of their protected D men going into the expansion draft.

A player who might be worth looking into who has been a bit overlooked in the UFA crop is Troy Brouwer. He's 30 years old and he's been good for about 20 goals fairly consistently for the past 7 years. Big body, 6'3", shoots right and plays the right wing. In theory, that's the type of guy Bergevin needs to be able to slot onto the 2nd line. Obviously, a guy like Stamkos or Okposo fills a much bigger void, but the number of teams reaching out to those players will be higher as well. If we fail to land a bigger name, Brouwer is a guy who could end up being a nice consolation prize, if you can get him for something like 3 years and 4M a season.

MB. must make a real attempt to trade for Stamkos no other way shape or form unless this type of risk-taking takes place then the Habs will just be an ordinary team & most likely will not make the play-offs for another year or two .

MB. has to be aggressive in the likes of the Pens GM. Rutherford who went out shortly after coming to Pittsburgh & making some very aggressive moves on his part .

Hab fans want a Cup back in Montreal & no more [edit] excuses about risk selling off the farm [edit] .

MB. makes decisive moves or we Habs Nation is in for some say twenty or more years disappointment this very long dry-spell is long enough in my opinion .

I would go out & sign Satamkos & bring in another piece from the Oilers like Hall or Eberle, trading PK. may be the answer to all of this as we must give-up some special talent to get-back equally as per talent & ability goes .

I say do what Pittsburgh did & go out & make things happen or mediocrity is something we all better get used to .

Go Habs Go !!!!

The way i see it is a player of stamkos caliber doesn't come up in free agency very often maybe once every 10 years. He's the type of player you spend decades hoping to draft. If we have any desire to win the stanley cup in the next 3-5 years we will sign him no matter the price tag. Having wingers like paches and gally on discount contracts gives us the opportunity to pay big for a player like stamkos even if it means we have to give away a player like pleky or dd to make room

I can't even remember when a top 5 player in the league made it to UFA status at age 26 or younger. This is a really rare chance to get not just a star but a superstar in his prime without giving up any assets whatsoever. Bergevin would be a fool not to at least make a competitive offer.

I've just had a horrible vision: Stamko's agent calls MB to seal the deal. MB consults with MT who says forget it and the deal is a no go!

I don't think we'll see something to that extreme. But what I can see is MB having spent all his money on pluggers (Byron, Shaw, Mitchell, Flynn, Emelin, Barberio, Desharnais) and just not having enough left to offer Stamkos.

The one advantage we have (which MB should keep) is that Shaw isn't actually signed yet. So before signing Shaw, I'd like to see MB go in on SS... if we manage to get SS, then you work out a trade to dump a veteran on a big contract to find the leftover money for Shaw. But don't sign Shaw first and then realize you have no money left for scorers.

well, i guess, but what good are goals if you dont have enough grit?

Yeah, that's probably what we're going to end up with. I'd throw max term and money at Stamkos because he's exactly what we need, but I'd be shocked if he signed here because well, this is Montreal, we never land any big ticket UFAs.

Then there are guys like Ladd, Eriksson, or Okposo, who would all be great additions to our team as well, but they're probably getting better deals elsewhere. So that leaves us with servicable third-string UFAs like Brouwer, Boedker, or Perron and maybe a cheap reclamation project from another team.

Guys, Stamkos is not coming here. I've never heard anyone in media say anything about Stamkos wanting to come here. We WILL make an offer but he isn't going to take it!

I don't see why our odds are any lower than any other team. Stamkos hasn't stated which teams he's interested in. Even GM's like Tim Murray and Lou Lamoriello and Ken Holland, who have explicitly stated they will contact Stamkos and want him have also said they have no idea what his intentions are. Other than saying he's interested in going back to Tampa (at least to the press) he actually hasn't said anything about where he wants to play. So while we're going to have to compete with plenty of other suitors, I don't see why Detroit or Vancouver or the Islanders are any more of an ideal destination than Montreal.

If Stamkos decides we are the team we can go as far over the cap as we want. we would have till the fall to sort it out.

But... if other teams know you are over the cap and need to trade someone to get under, they will hold our prospects ransom and demand things like "we'll take Emelin but we want McCarron too." It puts you in a tough spot for everyone to know you're desperate. if we're a touch over and can leave ourselves at least the option of a buyout getting us under, we're ok, but I wouldn't go 5-10M over the cap and then hope to scramble and beg to get back under.

There are some strange rumours about the new contract of Shaw. If I were GM I wouldn't rush anything. There is no danger of an offer sheet and if anyone would offer more than 3.7 mil/y we would get a 1st and 3rd in return and could happily accept. So why rush anything and offer him something close to 4mil?

it is less than some thought he was going to get. i agree it is a bit high but i think we are going to dump a bit of salary this summer, i feel that Desharnais and Emelin may be leaving us to make room for something better. and Shaw is not very old, i liked Prust but we got him too late in the game and his game fell off pretty quick we should get 4-5 good years out of Shaw.

its not that I don't like him, I just don't like the cap hit for some who is basically a third line player

3.9M and 6 years for Shaw, long-term deals for Prust and Moen and Byron... and yet, MB made a big stink about trying to hold out on PK Subban and Alex Galchenyuk to make them take bridge deals and weasel them out of a bit of money. Why is our GM so tight with money for key players yet willing to throw it around freely to role players and scrubs? Just because Bergevin was a role player himself when he played, doesn't mean he needs to over-reward that type of guy repeatedly. Zero advancement up the learning curve here for our GM.

If i was him and i could not get Stamkos, i would look at both Okposo and Ericson a right winger and a left wingerready to go right now while Carey and the gang are still in their prime. dump some salary and make it happen! this is a pivitol year for MB either he makes us better with his next couple of moves or we just flatline. one or two sharp moves before training camp could really wake the team up.

I would definitely look at Okposo and Eriksson as Plan B. Perron is another guy who could help, as could Troy Brouwer. The thing that makes Stamkos the best option in addition to just his skill as a player though is the expansion draft. Because you can only protect a limited number of players, the teams that have the higher end talent are going to find it easier to navigate the draft than the teas that rely on depth. If we add Perron and Okposo, say, then we would have to protect those two in addition to Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Pacioretty, Shaw, and so on... it means we likely end up having to expose someone like Andrighetto or Hudon or so on that we otherwise would have been able to protect. One great player (Stamkos) thus protects your assets better than two good players.
