Habberwacky
I think Emelin and MB take quite a few shots be it for play or contact, but Emelin has filled some big shoes at times and done an admirable job. I think any player who can consistently play for Russia in international tournaments is not all bad. In my mind he has been slightly underrated for the job he has done here. We are quite possibly looking at 3 Russian dmen on the backend this year.

ramcharger440
If you are including Markov I would say 2 1/2 Russians. that is pretty unfair he is not what he once was but he is better than many still to this day.
FirstStar
Right after coming back from injury, he looked horrible. Found he looked better last season, maybe the fear of re-injuring himself was starting to fade. Despite having a better season in 15-16, I can't justify the contract. We have Pateryn, at 1/3 of the price, for basically the same style. if we could dump him, that would be great, but i assume that he would've been traded at last years Trade deadline if there were any teams interested in him. Given that the Oilers have lucic, maybe their Alberta rivals may have interest in Emelin. Fingers crossed!!! I'd at least give it a shot if i was MB. Lucic would become useless once he face the habs. Might be a good way of containing him if I were the flames. The contract is pricey though.
fnveenie
Who would have thought that both DD and Emelin would be on the roster at this point in the offseason? I was expecting both to be gone. I guess that was a little naïve of me. So instead, we are rid of MT's two favourite whipping boys: Subban and Eller. How...predictable.

jedimaas
that is pretty unfair he is not what he once was but he is better than many still to this day. Agree. Markov was, for a short time, an elite defensman. For most of his career he was easily a top pairing dman. The last 2 years have signalled the end of that role (despite being used there still). Right now Id say he's maybe a top 4 still (with the right partner and the right assignments) but if you played him in a third pairing/PP specialist role he'd not only be perfectly capable, he'd be one of the most valuable depth defensmen in the league. The 2 questions/problems with that are: 1) is our top 4 strong enough to not play him there. 2) from a cap standpoint, can we afford to pay a guy that much for maybe 12-15 minutes a game? Right after coming back from injury, he looked horrible. Found he looked better last season, maybe the fear of re-injuring himself was starting to fade. Despite having a better season in 15-16, I can't justify the contract. We have Pateryn, at 1/3 of the price, for basically the same style. Right on the money. Last year was his best year in a while and if Therrien could prove he could use Emelin effectively (Ie in the proper situations) then I could see him still being useful to this team. Bottom line: Either Emelin, or Markov, are probably ok in our top 7. I am not sure that we will ever be as good as we can be with both of them there. There are merits (and risks) to trading either but with the loss of PK, id be much more inclined to move Emelin at this point even though the return for Markov for a team in need of a PP quarterback would be higher. I think that we will require someone like Markov to play with Weber on the PP.
Guest habs1952
. I think that we will require someone like Markov to play with Weber on the PP. So, who's gonna get back when the Habs cough up the puck on the PP? Both Markov and Weber are slowpokes.
ramcharger440
i think he might mean someone like Marky was? and Webber is no Subban but he is not that slow i think he will surprise some folks with his skating
CaptWelly
Well I think we'll be fine on the power play we'll have more weapons. Weber's shot isn't only hard but he's on net most of the time which also creates rebounds. Gally and Shaw my have to learn to move though! Weber plays a smarter game and knows when to dump in when pressured , so I don't think we'll be coughing up the puck near as much as when Subban was there on the point. A lot of the time Subban was deep in the corner when he'd lose the puck and couldn't get back anyway. I don't see Markov and Weber being any issue at all they will be a better combination. Good point, but PK also produced offensively, something that isn't Weber's strong suit. Weber is a safer player, so maybe with weber we won't lead the league in turnovers. Although weber isn't known for his offense, with the man advantage he's at the top of the list for defenders (goals). part of that has to do with his cannon of a shot, the other, he has the gift of getting his shots through. Don't know if that has to do with the former (hard shot), but his shot often makes it through. I don't know how Alexi Emelin will help our offense, he does contribute a few goals and assists over a season. I like how our PP blueline looks. Markov-Weber Bo-Petry Can always switch it up if need be. Put Bo with Weber and Petry with marky. With chuck's break out late last season and the addition of rad, and let's not forget Muller, we should do better with the man advantage.

Habberwacky
Emelin and Weber starting against Giroux is not a bad way to soften up some offensive lines. You have to know your getting hit when you touch the puck in our end

PuckPundit
Played hard and saved a goal against Blues. But caught napping and didn't move at all when Blues scored their equalizer.
ChiLla
Just noticed he's currently No.3 in hitting league-wide, even No. 2 among defencemen. Habs have 3 guys in the Top 50: Emelin, Shaw and Weber.

habs_93
A lot of guys can hit in the NHL, but very few in the last few years have been able to use hitting effectively. Which is to say, hit while staying in position and tangibly helping his team. So far this season, Emelin has put on a clinic in that regard. Very, very few of his hits are immediately followed by the opposing team retaining possession and getting a scoring chance. I think part of it is the greater mobility he's shown, but whatever the reason it's great to see. He may not be the hardest hitter in the NHL right now, but IMO he's easily one of the smartest. ChiLla
Textbook hit by Emelin, I understand Colorado's frustration but that's as clean as they come. I wouldn't like it either if it happened to one of our guys but hey, it's a Saturday night NHL home game, not pond hockey. That's what people want to see and they're paying a lot of money for it. Plus Colorado was throwing hits all night, you can't have it both ways.
