BigTed3
Yup Gets into a meaningless fight and showboats . Can't celebrate a goal or do the triple low five after a game win because that's too individualistic but it's OK to fight and then act like an idiot afterword because that's charact Not just afterward but also DURING. The guy stopped punching and literally looked up to the crowd and asked them to raise their noise level... that's way worse than anything Subban ever did. If Therrien doesn't call him out after the game, then it's just another argument in favor of his having a personal vendetta against Subban. habs_93
If people think he's going to get away with garbage like this, they've got another thing coming. Shaw knows how to play one way, and that's how he's going to play. And because this organization is obsessed with "grit" and "character", he's likely going to be out there when it counts. And this isn't some kind of anti-Shaw or anti-Montreal thing, either. He's a penalty magnet. Had a problem with Prust putting us behind the 8 ball? Just wait. kinot-1
The only thing memorable about Shaw in tonight's game was the boarding and fight, otherwise he was invisible.
Regis22
This is the character that the Habs have been missing http://www.hockeyinsideout.com/news/canadiens-beat-capitals-5-2-at-bell-centre It started after Shaw appeared to be slew-footed and he responded by ramming Connor Hobbs into the boards. Nathan Walker then challenged Shaw to fight and they both dropped the gloves. While holding Hobbs’s jersey with his left hand, Shaw actually motioned to the fans with his right hand to cheer — something you’d expect to see in WWE wrestling — and then as the crowd roared punched his opponent to the ice. There was another round of applause for Shaw — at least from those who still like fighting in hockey — when his penalties were announced

Noob616
What a gong show. Dude turned a meaningless preseason game into a wrestling match and made a big show out of how tough he is for beating up an AHL nobody and punching him while he's down. I thought we traded away the me first players and brought in some character! At least he hates to lose.
Habberwacky
No doubt Bergevin will have a talk with Shaw. Andrew is clearly not going to put up with any cheap shots and this may help some of his teammates. Not sure we need to get a 5 minute major when we have a big lead though. I look forward to watching him against some higher calibre players.

Guest
Only one game but certainly left a bad impression. This regime doesn't like to get any bad press so i imagine he should be read the riot act about his on ice antics. I expect we won't see that again. Guest
Quote from MT,,, "The most important thing is that the player wasn't hurt," said Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien. "Even if it was a pre-season game, [shaw] was clearly playing with a lot of emotion, which is completely normal." Leaves you wondering if he would have said the same thing if it was another player (PK). I'm a little disgusted that he just blew this off like that. I can maybe understand the boarding call being a product of the game, and it will be punished but,,,the showboating during the fight was over the top and not Hab like, as we've been left to believe over and over again by this current regime. Actually, as the penalty was being assessed, MT had a slight smile when the camera took a close up shot of him at the time. What that means is anyone's guess but IMO, if and when he gets a talking to by management, Shaw will only get a slight slap on the wrist.

CANADIENS27
Shaw also gets a safety hearing. Maybe Bergevin needs something to divert attention away from his contentment with mediocrity.

Quite the debut was suspended last yr for the homophobic slur Speaks of his character . IT's only one game but I hope he smartens up. This isn't the Chicago Black Hawks . His first preseason game involved a dirty hit and then that nonsense during the fight... So disappointing. And this is not just an anomaly. He was like this in Chicago, so Bergevin knew exactly what he was getting when he acquired him. Make no mistake, the Habs wanted a player like this. Look, the Bruins were very successful playing this type of hockey, and they were hated for it. But we know you can also win with skill and speed, and I'd personally rather see us not play dirty hockey and use the talent we have.
jeff33
im already bitter that he flipped this guy for eller ...and now....now i ask you p,k subban does what shaw did. how does kindly old coach respond. it actually made me think of clarkson in toronto trying to be a cool guy right off in the bat in toronto and getting in trouble, since he was in the same boat of signing a contract that he probably knew deep inside he would never live up to and felt a need to overcompensate right from day 1. aybe im getting a little too deep here lol.... didn't get a chance to see the game but from what i am reading in here....im predicting the tone of this thread has been set. People look at the 90s devils & say "yeah it was boring but they won" but forget how bad the years they didnt win were. Id rather watch a skilled and entertaining team than a vicious and dirty team, especially if my team doesnt win at the end of the season.
BigTed3
Suspended 3 pre-season games... the league has done this before, but it's a joke to suspend guys only for the pre-season. No regular games lost, no pay lost. Regulars sit out pre-season games already anyways, this isn't much of a punishment other than going on his record. Of course, the Bruins also had historically good goaltending from Thomas and only slightly worse from Rask. We've Carey Price, sure, but we're once again in the position of having to have epoch-defining goaltending from Carey Price to have any relevance. That, in my estimation, ain't great. The "Bruin model", such as it is, is just like every other get-rich-quick scheme in sports. It occasionally works, with a success rate that looks suspiciously similar to random noise. For every 2011 Boston Bruins, there's every year of the last 7-8 years Ottawa Senators, or Winnipeg, or Toronto, Columbus, etc. It's a media narrative with no basis in reality. It's discouraging to see the front office go after the magic beans yet again. As for Shaw's suspension, it's pathetic. Here's a guy with a history—if not an official record—of extremely cheap play, doing something completely inexcusable. I want the book thrown at players in these kind of situations, and the Department of Merchandising Player Safety totally whiffed.

Bergeron was probably the 2nd best center in the game (after Crosby) in 2011, and Chara was one of the two best defensemen alive along with (heh) Shea Weber. Lucic in his prime was an elite possession driver and goal scorer, same with Marchand, and then they also had insane scoring depth with Horton, Recchi, Ryder, Seguin, Krejci, that team was crazy deep. It's really weird that the Bruins cup gets chalked up to grit and toughness when what the Bruins really were was a fantastically talented team first and gritty second. They won the cup because Chara, Lucic, Marchand, Horton, Boychuk, etc. are great players who happen to be gritty, not because those players are gritty. To say nothing of Tim Thomas in 2011 having probably the single greatest goaltending season in the history of hockey. But yeah they totally won because Greg Campbell and Lucic liked to fight and Andrew Ference flipped off the crowd one time.

Don't think anyone was saying they won because they were fighters and dirty players. More saying they won while playing a dirty/tough style of hockey. They tried to intimidate people, they took a lot of cheapshots, they took a lot of penalties, and they still won. Some people might think they won despite that and others might believe the intimidation helped them against their opponents. Who knows. Point is that MB seems to be of the belief that he needs guys who cross the line, like Shaw and Weber, to help this team (we also know he was very interested in trying to sign Lucic) and he obviously thinks that having a few dirty players will pay off in the long run.
