Marc Bergevin and staff 2016-17

The Habs have fired analytics specialist Matt Pfeffer after just one year. I'm guessing it's because they either

1. Didn't feel he added anything because they weren't listening to him anyways

2. Got upset that his analytics suggested they lost both the Eller and Subban trades.

It's (not so) funny that the only two guys Bergevin was willing to can after last year were Craig Ramsey and Matt Pfeffer, both guys who were not his friends and who are Anglophones. Not that MB is out to get Anglophones per se, but it just seems that if you're one of the boys club, you're not kept well past your prime whereas if you're not, you're deemed expendable.

Then they hired the english speaking frenchman Muller. Yeah but the Oilers ( a team desperate to see the playoffs for the first time in 10 years) let Ramsey go too. Perhaps he was an attmept at a coaching reclamation project ala the player Semin?Fleishhmann/ Kassian reclamation that didn't work out. either that or it's because his words are messed up? he may have a heavy english accent.

As I said, I don't think Bergevin has a vendetta against Anglophones, I just think he has less affinity to those who are not part of his Francophone circle of friends. He allows for higher turnover among the Anglo people, whereas his buddies retain their jobs no matter how badly they do.

Pretty much, Nepotism at its finest. I thought the last regime was bad. This is the worst since Houle/Tremblay.

In fairness though, we can see how bad the Houle/Tremblay regime was because its in the past.

Bergevin/Therrien are promising us a cup so, while I dont believe its going to happen, i suppose we have to at least give them the opportunity.

The bed is made. Lets see if they mess it.

The stats created from or for an analytic profile should be consistent no matter who produces them if it is indeed a reliable stat as the basis for the analytics needs to be from a consistent and reliable source. So it sounds like it must be a personality issue. Perhaps Mr. Pfeiffer was overly zealous in contributing to the trade discussion, or they may have found someone who can offer analysis from a slightly different perspective. The numbers should not be the issue here and I am sure they will find the replacement they want.

Looks like he extended Timmins

That's a good move imo. No one has a perfect record when judging young, unproven talent. Timmins has to be regarded as one of the best at assessing skill.

Anyone remember Alexandre Daigle?

Think it was Daigle who the sens picked 1st overall, while the Whalers went with a dman name Chris Pronger. Regardless of it was Daigle or another player, fact is, they never did much at the NHL level, while the team who picked 2nd, scored big picking up Pronger.

Dmen are hard to assess and Hartford despite picking 2nd, won that draft hands down.

There have been some busts for TT, mainly Louis Leblanc and, anyone remember this name... Fisher.

He was also very against BG trading McDonaugh. McD had come off a bad season, but TT insisted that he would bounce back. BG traded him anyways and the rest is history.

Excerpt from article on Timmins by Justin Blades:

-Although he hasn't had as many draft picks to work with in recent years, with the team using second-round picks as currency in player acquisitions, Timmins and his staff have brought some promising talents into the organization. Late-round additions have included steadily producing defence prospect Simon Bourque (2015), point-per-game player Daniel Audette (2014), all-around talent Jeremy Gregoire (2013), and AHL standout Charles Hudon (2012).

Timmins has worked in the NHL since 1992, when he got his start with the Ottawa Senators. He's been with the Canadiens since 2003. He's been largely responsible for the Canadiens' draft selections for some time, including Carey Price, Brendan Gallagher, and Alex Galchenyuk. He was a big part of a stellar draft year in 2007, in which the team drafted three top-end skaters: Ryan McDonagh, P.K. Subban, and Max Pacioretty. This past summer, the team selected talented defenceman Mikhail Sergachev, who appears to have the talent to become a key player for the team in the near future.

Timmins will be closely watching his charges at the rookie camp later this summer, and will be scouting players from all over North America and beyond once the hockey season starts in preparation for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in Chicago.

he's done well drafting, too bad our GM's (plural) have made his hard work go to waste.

2 of the 3 players he chose in 2007 are no longer habs, PK and McD.

Can't take things personally, but it has to bother him at some level. Especially when he sees them having success with other teams.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Timmins get a shot as a GM here. He's stated he's interested in becoming a GM at some point in his career. He's shown a decent understanding of talent and the need for speed and skill. I think he could do a better job than Bergevin.

I agree 100% I see him as a perfect candidate for that job.

Hmm, never thought of that. Didn't know he even showed an interest.

He isn't a francophone, but he's been with the organization for a long time(almost 15 years), especially in today's day and age.

He does have an eye for young talent.

Hard to say without any reference, but one thing for sure, he wouldn't have traded McDonaugh for Gomez.

Could be a serious contender, given he's already been in the organization for a while and knows what the market and ownership wants.

Sounds good to me. The ONLY real skill of importance, IMO, is talent evaluation. Timmins is probably better at it than MB. Obviously there's some skill that goes along with negotiating a trade, but... I'm assuming Timmins can learn that. At least he will know the worth of a player BEFORE dealing them.

While dealing with prospectss and contracts would notbe too big an issue he would hav to be careful about the negotiation of contracts and would need to get experience with the day to day operations and evaluating coaches. He has excellent credentials for some areas of the job, but not sure of his background on designing the other aspects of the job and player relations. He can clearly work well with others as the team has developed a strong scouting staff.

In accordance with thescore.com:

-Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin was ranked among the worst general managers in the league.

-26th Marc Bergevin has signed numerous deals that carry incredible value for the Canadiens, but his allegiances and mismanagement of P.K. Subban stands to define his tenure.

-Coaches

M. Therrien

-24th Michel Therrien is a strong strategist, but his failure to adjust to given circumstances led to the demise of the Canadiens last season. Carey Price's injury didn't help either, but his misuse of Alex Galchenyuk and others has led to lots of scrutiny in Montreal.

Habs GM Marc Bergevin has Therrien's back, but if Montreal is outside the playoff cutline early on next season, the writing could be on the wall.
