I'm hoping the best and not saying a change wasn't needed. I was just hoping for more of an up tempo type style of coach. It's actually what Boston went to after he left. He has also run good offensively talented players out of town if they weren't also good defensively see Seguin and Kessel both he didn't like their defensive play. I'm sure it'll start out with great enthusiasm. We'll see after 20 games in. Go Habs !!! "He's been preaching a lot of offense," left wing Max Pacioretty said. "You know, take care of your end, but once we have the puck we don't want to give it back. And in my mind that's offensive thinking. A good defense is holding onto the puck in the offensive zone and not just giving it away, not just putting it on net for no reason, and those are some things that he already harps [on], so I was excited to hear that." https://www.nhl.com/news/canadiens-coach-claude-julien-focusing-on-positives/c-286879344

Noob616
I still can't believe how monumentally stupid the Bruins were to fire him in the first place. What an amazing stroke of luck.

H_T_L
Wondering if he'll be inclined to give Price more starts including B2B's? We saw him do that with Rask a lot, although their backup was pretty brutal.

Habberwacky
"Meet the new boss same as the old boss," joking here, but we do seem to be down a rabbit hole with some of our play. No purpose to some movement or passing. Forecheck has evaporated and we appear to have some zombies in our own end at times. I wonder if Therrien is using the vacation Julien had planned.. Strange to see a team with this much experience lose their focus. The turnover (Beaulieu) really killed us today as we don't seem to be scoring again and the Jets aren't exactly defensive juggernauts. I thought we played okay, but got pushed around a little and are not checking or skating well. Other than that we should be fine. It will be interesting to see how Julien responds. A four or five game win streak would be nice right about now.

Definitely. If there's one coach who knows about the Canadiens' style of play, it's him. I'm sure he's making clear now those things that are not acceptable. The team will eventually learn to play the new system, and in the mean time, get drilled on the fundamentals like never before. I'm sure he didn't intentionally want to lose his first game behind the bench, but the loss does allow for certain measures to be taken in order to show improvement. BigTed3
Not a great first game, but I did like some of the decision-making better than what we got under Therrien. It'll take time to see results in terms of changes to the system.

PuckPundit
Just waiting for Julien to tear down the whole system and clone the 2009-2013 Bruins here in Montreal. He can start by firing the assistant coaching staff (except Muller and Waite) and poaching the guys he knew at Boston. It's time for radical revolution, not stable evolution! Change the entire playing style and system!
Habs_Hockey_Nutz
Question: Was Claude Julien the Bruins coach when Chara broke Pacioretty's neck? Question: Was Julien the Bruins coach some years back when there was that brawl beat down of the Habs players by the Bruins? Question: How many Habs players from those times are still around and can remember Julien at that time?

Even I despised Julien and his constant whining to the refs when he was HC of the Bruins. But he's now the Habs HC, so foe becomes friend. If tomorrow Marchand, Lucic and Chara become Habs, all is forgiven and bygones be bygones. Who knows whether Lucic would become best buddies with Emelin, and they bunk together on road trips? ramcharger440
Team looked more involved and I could see some of the changes to the system. the Rags are big and fast but we held our own which has not happened for a long time so all in all it seems we took a step forward. H_T_L
I had issues with some of his decisions last night but unlike MT, I don't expect him to stand pat, and to make adjustments once he sees it's clearly not working in one area. What's the infatuation with having Shaw on the PP? He clearly has shown he doesn't belong there. As for the PK,,,, we're lucky we weren't burned with having 3 guys holding the blueline when Weber and Emelin are 2 of those guys. A simple dump and chase by the other team would quickly put us at a disadvantage with those too slowpokes skating back to get possession.

I wonder how much of the special teams were the assistants' calls. Sure they are the same guys we had before but as HC maybe Julien said "guys, these are not working, give me some different ideas." Overall the team looked a LOT better than it has since... what, 2016?

So now Julien has seen for himself what the armchair viewer sees during the game, there should be no excuses not to fix the following defects: 1) Emelin moved out of first pairing with Weber. He cost the team goals in both NY games; 2) Danault is not a first line centre. He had his time but the honeymoon is clearly over. For better or worse, Galchenyuk has to slot back to 1C. 3) Pleky can no longer score even in front of empty net. His offensive role should now strictly be playmaker. Keep puck possession and setup his linemates. Do not shoot unless on one-on-one breakaway or is the solo guy in opponent zone. Ditto for Gallagher. If all these obvious issues are not corrected for the Leafs game, then CJ might not be the genius we think he is. Also hoping he auditions more youngsters, particularly Hudon. If the veterans can't shake off their slump, at least give the youngsters the opportunity to prove themselves to the new coach. Give DD a shot on the 3rd/4th line since he can do no worse. I'm still keen to try Nestorov on the PP because of his powerful shot. As for Shaw on the PP, I sense it's due to pressure from MB to play him due to personal bias and his costly acquisition. I have confidence, (hopefully not misguided), that DD under Julien can be useful. He was a ball and chain because of Therrien's usage of him more than anything. Having both of Galchenyuk and Desharnais up the middle is still a concern, but it's a risk we maybe have to take with our offensive struggles, with Danault, Mitchell, and Plekanec being our other options. If we get another top 6 center, there's no room for Desharnais (or Plekanec), but until then we are kind of stuck.

MuddyWaterMoose
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/montreal-canadiens-beginning-make-progress-claude-julien/ "The Canadiens are 19-20-7 since Nov. 13 after starting the season 13-1-1, and their once-immense lead in the Atlantic Division is now tenuous. In fact, the Canadiens are only four points up on ninth in the Eastern Conference, so it makes sense that people are having flashbacks to last season. With that said, how representative is that record of the Canadiens’ play over that time? Overall this season, the Canadiens rank fourth in the NHL in score-adjusted Corsi at 52.73% between the powerhouse Washington Capitals and the Pacific Division-leading San Jose Sharks. Since the cutoff point where they’ve been under .500, the Canadiens have actually improved their play to the point of 53.51% score-adjusted Corsi. This doesn’t mean everything is perfect, but this is a strong indicator that at even strength, this team is good." Thoughts?
Noob616
Don't have a problem with Desharnais and Andrighetto in the lineup, much rather load 4 lines with some skilled players than have Flynn and McCarron on the 4th line.
