Probably the most under-rated player in the NHL.

and probably the one who needs the most help up front, thats why I enjoyed watching him and Radulov, too bad we never really found a third man.

I'd have to agree. If not the singular most, one of the contenders for the title. His shot generation and primary point production just keeps on rolling on.

Yeah I'm always amazed at how much hate he gets from Habs fans. Pulls 35G out of thin air every year with plugs as his center and mediocre stay at home D feeding him passes. His contract at 4.5M is obscenely good value, he's elite at all situations and can carry a line all by himself with a Golden Retreiver at center.

Hmmm... you might be on to something here.  There's nothing in the rules that says that we can't ice a golden retriever at centre!

There's been a lot to complain about in the first few games as the team adjusts but the captain isnt one of them.  Sure he only has one goal but that line has been jumping. If they play like that for 80 games he'll get his 35+ goals easily. He has 13 shots in 3 games.

There's been some questionable plays up front but nearly all of our problems right now come from the blueline.

But there is more to the game than Patches just getting HIS 35+ goals. I swear he is the most uninspiring team captain I've ever seen in any sport.

Its really tough to say who is and isnt a good captain as so much of it is behind closed doors.  I agree that on the surface he doesnt seem like the best choice. There's been speculation or suggestion that Weber should be given the C asap.  I dont know if that will do much but certainly if we're looking for a player to lead by example, he's the guy who most deserves it 3 games into the season.

I think they won't risk offending Max by stripping him of the C. IMO the only way he loses it, is if he's traded.

Yeah, i cant see this team stripping the C.  I could see them trying a vote though.  I dont think Patches would voluntarily give it up (he would have done that when Weber was traded for).

So, I guess we have all made a big collective "no comment" here?

I watched that whole game last night and he did nothing. literally nothing. if he connected on a 4 foot pass even....I missed it.

Trading this guy is the first move (after firing our intrepid garage sale hunting GM) in the quest to start taking ourselves seriously.  Max Nonfactoretty. He truly is the face of our franchise right now. A fugazi of a contender.

During the last three seasons, Pacioretty scored 102 goals. Sixty-four of them were assisted by Andrei Markov (30), P.K. Subban (25) or Nathan Beaulieu (9), who are no longer with the team.

No biggie though, we have Karl Alzner now

Pacioretty has been and always will be a streaky player. I have no doubt our defence is weaker as a unit in terms of creating offence, but it's not the only thing holding Pacioretty back. He's not shooting well, he's not having much luck with Drouin, and he's not having any success on the PP. For his career, he's an 11% shooter and he's at 5% this season, like most of the other Habs. His Corsi is actually better than it's been in the past 5 years. His quality of linemate and quality of competition haven't changed. But his PDO is down at 88, which is remarkably low. All this suggests his numbers will improve over time, again much like the rest of the team.

So there's no doubt he has under-performed and under-whelmed. But I'm also pretty comfortable, as in past years, saying that Pacioretty will go on hot streaks and score in bunches and as long as he stays healthy, he'll hit at least 30 goals by the end of the year. Two things I would change:

1. Split him from Drouin (and put AG with JD and BG instead), maybe we'll see that tonight!

2. Swap him and Galchenyuk on the PP, putting Max in the slot and AG along the half-wall.

I would consider trading Max to get younger if we can get a younger star, but assuming he stays, I think he'll be absolutely fine for goals in the long run. We can argue about hs value as captain, but as a scorer, the numbers suggest the goals will come, even with our current D.

Why does he always get a free pass no matter how poorly he plays? I would like to see drouin , chucky and letkonen given a chance... put patches on the fourth line for a bit and see if that helps him up his compete level

The problem is, when you have a severe lack of scoring, you usually will try everything you can to get your leading goal scorer going. The last time Patches didnt lead the team in scoring, Erik Cole did (and patches was still second, with 33 goals that year).

I think everyone agrees he's been massively underperforming but as a streaky player (as most goal scorers are) we also need to find a way to get him scoring because this team desperately needs it.

That said, I would very much be in the "try something different camp"  especially since we've seen both Plekanec and Danault have good chemistry with Patches.

Galchenyuk - Drouin - Gallagher
Pacioretty - Danault - Lehkonen
Hudon - Plekanec - Shaw/Byron

would create better scoring lines than what we're seeing right now.
