eldag
Watch the Bob Mac interview with our stunning General Manager on the TSN site if you have the stomach for it. I couldn't watch any further after the 6 minute mark. Basically, he thinks the team has a chance at competing for the playoffs. Then .. if we make the playoffs ..... anything can happen. Like last year ... remember when we were embarrassed by a mediocre NY Ranger team????? We had the scoring says Bergevin ... it just went dry at the time ....... Then Bobby asked him why he felt it necessary to completely turn over his defense with only Petry left from the core group. This is when it gets muddled and confusing ... he says something about needing young studs like the Leafs' Morgan Reilly ...... HUH???????? PK won the Norris but he does not qualify as a stud I guess........ Then he was asked who would pare with Weber ...... Good question said our fearless leader .... he is not sure ... we'll find out in training camp. This is when I turned it off ... maybe the evil genius has a plan that came out in subsequent minutes of the interview but I heard all I needed to know. Absolutely incredible!!!!! ChiLla
Some interesting insights on the Radulov negotiations in that interview. According to MB, Rad's agent was pretty set on getting that 8-year deal... even though it was publicly denied at the time.

I actually dont dispute what MB said in that regard. I suspect Rad was looking for 7 or 8 years. But, MB is known for hardball. On more than one occasion we've heard that he's gotten to a point in negotiations where he says "take it or leave it." This is fine if its a deadline day deal for Tomas Vanek. Its quite a bit different when you're talking about letting a player like Radulov walk for nothing. Makes you wonder if MB was given a chance to match (i suspect he was) but his self-imposed "final offer" made him mum on the subject.

jennifer_rocket
The defense looks... poor. We're actually desperate that Mete can make the jump from junior to top pairing to save our D. The loss of Subban continues to sting. The team has NOT been able to score in pre-season. THAT is of concern. Sitting on plenty of unused cap space, that the manager has failed to make use of.

I think they can score when they play the game like they did vs. Ottawa. The question is.....will they? The larger question is.....will it even matter come playoff time? I've resigned myself to not getting my hopes up any more, especially as long as the guy who sent the Habs' Norris Trophy Defenseman packing is still running the show. Yes, the loss of Subban will sting for years to come. Letting Radulov walk is another mistake. MB's bad decisions outweigh his good ones, IMO. And the eternal elitist mentality is nothing more than a disguised recipe for failure. "Forget what the fans want. No, we did not win a Cup last season, but we hired another French-speaking coach, yes? We sold lots of tickets and lots of beer for you, Mr. Molson, yes? This is all that matters, no? I'm sure there is no connection between trading Subban to Nashville and Nashville going to the Stanley Cup Finals that same year. There cannot be. Subban was a selfish player and a cancer in the locker room. It was his fault the Canadiens have not won a championship in 23 years." It's just all too ridiculously frustrating to even get riled up about.

ramcharger440
I don't know, it was the first time we really had an NHL roster and you could see it clicking. now for sure the Sens were without some of the offensive firepower they have but we dusted them really good. The sens live and die by Karllsson so its tough to read too much into that huge win but I agree that our team, more than most, need a full roster to be at its best. This is not a team that will have one line or one pairing doing all the work, we are going to play a typical CJ sort of game, meaning we will wear teams down and its going to take all 4 lines and all 3 pairings to win as a unit. I think we'll be ok to be honest.

Bergevin is officially caught in the twilight zone of everyone knowing now what a blunder the Subban trade was, but him not being able to (or having the courage to) acknowledge it for what it is. It's like he's hoping no one notices the elephant in the room.....and in this instance, he's the elephant! This tragic comedy is probably the last act of the Bergevin episode. jeff33
If MB went on shark tank and pitched this team in the 6th year of his 5 year plan, as one pundit so cleverly pointed out, Mr. Wonderful would tell him to take it out back and shoot it. Of the guys gone/in, I would say Schlemko > Emelin and maybe Alzer > Beau (assuming both are used as 3rd pairing guys) but without replacing Markov, we're worse - potentially way worse, depending upon how it trickles down the roster. The big problem is, defensemen dont play in a vacuum. They live and die with their partner & right now we have ill-suited partners for both Petry and Benn. Mete-Weber looks fine but will it/he last a full season? Then there's Petry - Alzner? Yikes. Maybe Petry-Schlemko will work- but then will Benn-Alzner? They play nearly identical styles. We have way too many shut down guys and not nearly enough good transition players.

Problem is, sometimes these last acts go on and on.....and on..... The thing is though, as bas as the Subban deal was, we got back a good player in return. We have at least a couple of good years left in him. Sure we lost it. Sure we would be better with Subban but a good GM would have tried to work on the other problems on this team. Bergevin made an "all in" move thinking Weber was a better player right now (up for debate) but then continued an entire year with huge holes in his roster. So while I agree the Subban trade was horrible, the bigger problem is that Bergevin didnt address the bigger holes in the roster & try to solve them. How do you embarrass a guy who held on to MT for a year longer then he should of despite being lambasted about it on a daily basis by both fans and media? Let's not even get into some of his recent signings and player choices.
