Confirming The Post’s report from last month, the team announced it will be sellers leading up to the Feb. 26 trade deadline. They also placed defenseman Brendan Smith, who signed a four-year, $17.4 million contract in the offseason, on waivers. Anyone on that team that we might want? Probably not. I mean they have some interesting pieces (Nieves, Graves, Day) but the problem is that they are pretty much in the same boat as us. They want to retool and they will sell off their vets to get some younger players. They dont want Pacioretty, they dont want Weber, or shaw, or plekanec etc. They want young talented players like Mete or Drouin, or Galchenyuk or Poehling. I think our ideal trading partner is a team on the cusp of winning (St Louis, Nashville, Columbus) who will consider overpaying in terms of future prospects for a higher chance of winning it all now. Yep. A 1st, 2nd and a quality prospect for Patches would be a good return imo. The picks will likely be later in the round, as the team interested will likely be a Cup contender, so the quality prospect is the key.

I could also see a team rich at once position (st louis at defense for example) dealing a young roster player + top prospect+ 2nd if they didnt want to lose that 1st (some teams are opposed to ever trading a first rounder). Id be fine with Thomas + Dunn + 2nd for Patches.

So yeah, we might be looking at a 2nd rounder, except that it'll be a low 2nd rounder. Not ideal. So might be more important to hit them up for two key prospects like Thomas + Kyrou/Dunn than anything else.

I think you could possibly swing Thomas + Kyrou + Dunn but you'd have to give them more than just patches. Maybe Patches + Byron + Schlemko (or a different ufa defensman) something that will really put them over the top for this year.
maas_art
Pierre LeBrun saying today that the Penns are interested in Plekanec but balking at his $6m salary. If they are sending us back a good enough pick the habs should eat 1/2 (he's no good to us at this point in the season) but im not sure whats on the table. We should just retain the maximum amount possible and start shopping him around to optimize his potential trade return, seems like a no-brainer really but with MB you just never know. He'd be a great fit with the Pens though.

I know that people say trade him & then resign him this summer but the reality is that if you trade him to pittsburgh and they go deep (or win) in the playoffs, do you really think we stand a chance of resigning him if the Pens offer him the same contract? Dont get me wrong, I think we should trade him and turn him into an asset no matter what, but I just think that may be MB's thinking.

This is me being cynical yes, but Im afraid theres a sour dose of reality in there and Im even more afraid of how much reality

H_T_L
If a team was acquiring and paying for a player based on past performances, then Max fits that bill. If they're picking him up based on his current level of play, then that decision becomes cloudier. What he has going for him is that a team could be hoping the change in scenery fires him up again and he regains his touch ( don't see it myself from watching him all season) plus the fact he's signed for next season at a real bargain, even if he only pops 20 goals. Personally, i don't think his value will hit the asking price, even if we wait for the draft. Same for those other guys. Somebody will lower their demands. GM's are still a little gun shy after watching what happened with Duchene IMO.

As much as we want to use duchene as the comparable, other GM's are probably looking at it in the complete opposite way, as a cautionary tale. We should be thinking about the erat for filip forsberg trade as a template, rather than duchene. like i said ,i would rather take thomas straight up than a package of 2 or 3 elements at the draft which might all amount to nothing special. BigTed3
MB is himself in NY tonight for the Flames-Rags game. For the love of hockey, he had better not be scouting the Rangers, who are sellers (like we should be) and are going to be parting with older vets not young players we can re-build around. Giant NO to Nash, smaller but still large NO to McDonagh and what it would cost us to acquire a player who no longer fits into our Cup window. So hopefully he is there for the Flames. Rumors about our interest in Bennett and Jankowski as possible centers. Personally, I'm more excited about Bennett. If we could get Bennett and a young D man like Vilimaki or Fox, in combination with a draft pick of some sort, that would be a good return for Pacioretty (whom the Flames are reportedly interested in). Windoe
Pacioretty is well regarded by players in the league, and would be welcomed on most teams. He's a natural goal scorer who puts up strong numbers despite never playing with a proper center. He's got playoff experience, though I agree that he has never really performed very well in the playoffs. He gives me the Leclair feeling. Give him a real 1C to play with, and watch out. The trick for MB will be to find a trading partner who is in their Cup window that will give us a decent 1C prospect. If he can't get that, I doubt Pacioretty gets traded. If you are correct we will get a very good offer for him, because teams will not want to miss the opportunity to add this guy for their cup run this year, and either a full season next year or an asset they can flip at the deadline. He gives me that Michael Ryder feeling. put him on a team america with a real 1C and....he ends up on the 4th line because hes actually not an elite level hockey player. I think other teams know what he is...a guy who has a good wrister and nothing else, butter soft and not a playoff performer. and If I am right we will NOT be offered a top ceneter prospect, we will get offers MB wont like, and he will not trade max at the deadline. If thats the case, we have to fire MB in the offseason and get the new guy to take what he can get

BigTed3
Scout updates: - Edm and Chi each have two scouts at our game tonight. Dal has one. - Habs have another scout at the Leafs/Sens game tonight. That's 3 games in about a week where we've been scouting Toronto. Wonder if there's something to it, and you've got to think they need help on the back end. Who do we have who's going to be a boon to them? Weber. Petry could also be a fit, but a guy I'd hope MB would be less willing to trade (unless he's also dealing everyone else). And if he's trading someone like Benn or Alzner or Schlemko to Toronto, we're probably not getting a roster player back, so it wouldn't help us to scout their NHL roster so often. Gotta feel like this is a Weber for someone deal that's being looked into. Gotta feel like it's Nylander who would be the key guy we're looking at too. My ask would be Weber for Nylander, Liljegren, and a 2nd round pick.

Born-To-Be-A-Hab
Max is from the New York area, so lets make a deal with the Islanders . Max to the islanders for Kieffer Bellows,Anthony Beauvillier, and one of these defenseman Johnny Boychuk or Ryan Puluck. If you have to add Jodie Benn to get it done ,do it.Give up a 2nd round pick to Winnipeg for Nic Petan . Now in the of season trade Price , Weber and Andrew Shaw to Edmonton for Jesse Puljujarvi,Leon Draisaitl,Darnell Nurse and Cam Talbot. If you have to add a 2nd round pick to sweeten the deal do it.
