Finally! Our #1 left side partner for the Man Mountain!

Snark mode off: Assuming an Alzner-Weber "top pairing" (OK I guess I can't turn snark mode off entirely) he's most likely just an extra veteran player for preseason games and possibly AHL depth. With Streit, Jerabek, Schlemko, Davidson, and Gelinas all competing for 3 spots (2nd and 3rd pair LD + #7D) it's hard to imagine Gelinas coming out of camp as the 3rd best of that group.

I actually don't mind this move. I think he's got more potential than some of the other guys we've acquired, and if he has a bad camp, we can cut him lose for nothing. Is he the answer to our top 4? No. But I think he's better than how he fared in Colorado and he's young and has size.

It's a given that Weber and Petry are the top two right-handed D men. Alzner, Benn, and Schlemko are just about locks to be on the squad too (I don't think Schlemko's going to be in the same competition pool as the other guys you listed). So there are, as you said, 2-3 spots for Streit, Jerabek, Gelinas, Davidson, Morrow, +/- and surprises coming out of camp. Jerabek is waiver-exempt so he's the most likely to go down, and he'd really have to blow us away with his camp performance to stick IMO. I doubt Streit goes down to the minors, and I think Davidson has some upside. So to me, Gelinas is in a battle with Morrow and maybe Lernout and Jerabek to force the Habs into keeping 8 D men. Long odds, but probably as good a shot as he's going to get anywhere else, seeing as the Habs only have 4-5 true NHL defencemen and the other guys are by no means locks.

This should do the trick!

One would think Gelinas would have been signed by a team long before the end of August if he had any potential. But give the Habs credit for taking on another reclamation project.
