I would "think" it's because neither Niemi, nor Montoya will clear waivers if they're sent down. Montoya was signed as a free agent (so he cost us nothing), and now MB got a 4th for him. But that's just a guess.

You don't think either one of those guys could go to the minors and not be picked up . Niemi is terrible and Montoya's a little better Either way no loss

MB "may" have asked around the league for a trade, and the OIlers bit.
Regis22
Edmonton is desparate. They are trying to make the playoffs no way he plays more than 7 games ...lol The Montreal Canadiens have sent goaltender Al Montoya to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2018. The pick becomes a fourth-round selection if he plays in seven games or more, otheriwse it will be a fifth-rounder, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reports
Regis22
So now Montreal has arguably the best goalie in the league ( Price ) and the worst ( Niemi ) And Niemi is 34 I don't care for the trade either way but MB should be forbidden from making any trades

Habberwacky
Good news for Lindgren here I believe. I can see Bergevin trying to pick up some more picks or dump some more salary ie. Plekanec moving if we don't put about 10 in a row together soon.

I mean he was brutal before he came here but Waite seems to have gotten him back to basics & he played pretty sharp in 4 games with us. Considering he had Alzner and Morrow playing in front of him, a .918 save percentage aint half bad. Im assuming that we decided we didnt need Montoya AND Neimi and with AM we got a pick, with AN we probably would have gotten nothing. If Price gets injured at any point I suspect we ride Lindgren anyway, so the backup on this team is pretty irrelevant.
maas_art
FWIW its a conditional 4th rounder: "Contingent on Montoya playing 30 minutes or more in at least seven more games this season, otherwise the pick becomes a fifth-rounder in 2018." Not a huge stretch to think AM will play 7 games but still worth noting.
BigTed3
Doubt Montoya gets 7 games the rest of the way, but a 5th rounder is still okay by me. The bottom line is this: Montoya wasn't really in the plans past this year anyways, because Lindgren will be the back-up (unless he too is traded) next season. This year is a write-off, so who cares who the back-up is. So for half of an inconsequential season, we basically dealt Montoya for Niemi and a 4th/5th round pick. I have no issue with that whatsoever. At worst, it's a write-off. At best, we find a diamond in the rough with our draft choice. It's a free mid-round pick, so I'm not complaining. Edmonton has 8 back to backs so its possible. But i agree with what you're saying.

But... - Montoya is still on IR, so who knows when he's actually activated - Edm has 3 goalies now, so no guarantee Montoya is even the go-to back-up - If the Oilers are competitive for a playoff spot, they probably lean on Talbot for 90% of their remaining games, especially since he missed some time already - If the Oilers are not competitive and don't care whether they win, why not play Montoya just 6 games and give Brossoit the remainder so as not to lose the pick. I don't see much incentive for Edm to play one back-up over another. It's probably the least important roster spot in hockey.

I was led to believe that no-one who is injured could be traded.

Nathan Horton was on the LTIR when he was traded too. It usually doesnt happen though because its always a huge risk if its more than a minor issue. In this case though i think you're right - i was pretty sure AM was off the IR and was practicing with the club prior to the trade.
BigTed3
No, he was still on IR... Edmonton still has him listed on their IR. Until he's actually going to get in a game, there wasn't much point in officially activating him.
