Rank These Other Players (and Coaches)

Let's do this again. Rank the following players/coaches within each group... again, for the players, think of your ranking as you would not trade the first guy ranked for any of the others, the second guy for anyone but the first, etc... for the coaches, think of the order in which you would want these men coaching the Habs right now. Please do not vote ties, whoever you write down first will be awarded the points for that spot:

Group 1 (secondary scoring):

- Phillip Danault

- Paul Byron

- Artturi Lehkonen

- Charles Hudon

- Nikita Scherbak

Group 2 (depth defencemen):

- Karl Alzner

- David Schlemko

- Alexei Emelin

- Jordie Benn

- Josh Gorges

Group 3 (head coaches):

- Claude Julien

- Michel Therrien

- Gerard Gallant

- Guy Boucher

- Patrick Roy

This one is a bit tricky because of sample size but, based on what I think some of them will do going forward (ie, Josh Gorges 8 years ago):

Group 1 (secondary scoring): Hudon, Scherbak, Lehkonen, Danault, Byron

Group 2 (depth defencemen): Benn, Schlemko, Alzner, Emelin, Gorges

Group 3 (head coaches): Julien, Gallant, Boucher, Therrien, Roy

The coaches are the toughest because Gallant may well be the best, but has such a small sample size.  Roy has skill but is  a complete nutcase at times.

So here are your results, with total points based on a 6-4-3-2-1 system and number of first-place votes in brackets:

Group 1:

- Danault 55 pts ( 4)

- Lehkonen 54 pts (5)

- Hudon 40 pts (2)

- Byron 36 pts (2)

- Scherbak 21 pts (0)

Easily the closest heat for top spot, with Danault and Lehkonen virtually even. Hudon and Byron were viewed as intermediate in value, and Scherbak, who is lighting up the AHL, couldn't translate potential into worth at the NHL level.

Group 2:

- Benn 64 pts ( 7)

- Emelin 54 pts (4)

- Schlemko 36 pts (1)

- Gorges 33 pts (1)

- Alzner 21 pts (0)

A comfortable win for Jordie Benn, with Emelin clearly ahead of the other three. A very clear suggestion here that as much flack as Emelin took, Bergevin significantly downgraded his defence by acquiring Alzner and Schlemko.

Group 3:

- Julien 66 pts (8)

- Gallant 56 pts (4)

- Boucher 40 pts (1)

- Roy 26 pts (0)

- Therrien 20 pts (0)

Among many of the French candidates (or in Gallant's case a former assistant who was rumored to be offered an interview for our head coaching job), we appear to have the guy that posters here seem to like the most. If ever there is another coaching change, it's clear people want to stay away from Roy as much as they wanted to dispatch Therrien.
