Dear Mr Molson

Dear Mr Molson,

I am sure you wont read this. I know you are a busy man, with lots of commitments so a post on a message board (even one owned by your business) probably never hits your radar, but maybe - just maybe - one of your crew will read it and relay it back to you.

Recently you were asked about Marc Bergevin & whether his job was in jeopardy.  Your response was that he was safe because "He's somebody who really understands how to build a hockey team."  I would like to dispute that comment.

I understand that Mr. Bergevin is a great orator. I know he has a history with over 1000 NHL games played. I know that you, yourself, feel like you are not a great hockey mind but I implore you to reconsider.   Marc Bergevin inhereted a pretty decent team and did a little tinkering.  In his first 3 years we won a fair number of playoff hockey games and a few rounds.  In the last 3 years we have played a total of one round (which we lost) and won 2 games.  Two.

If that is not enough to show you that Marc Bergevin does not know how to build a hockey team let me give you some more stats:

- The team started the year with a 1-6-1 record, matching their worst eight-game start in 76 years.
- The team has been
shut out 12 times this season, the most in a season, in franchise history.

- In a game against Toronto the team allowed 26 shots in one period, again the most in franchise history.
- They have lost 23 road games (and counting) in regulation, another franchise record.
- Scoring is up across the league yet the team has 180 goals for and 224 goals against - on pace to be the worst in franchise history.

There is some arguement that this is the worst Montreal Canadiens team in history. People are comparing it with the 2000-01 habs, the 1994-95 etc and while its possible this is not the worst ever, the fact that its even being discussed shows how dire things have become.

This team is not devoid of talent. I believe that with management changes and a clear vision a competent GM - one who actually can build a team, not just tinker - could still make this team very competitive in the next 2 - 3 years.   Bold moves must be made. Staying the course should not be a consideration at this point.

Sincerely,
A life-long Habs fan who has zero interest in the team any more...

Like you said, there's close to zero chance that Geoff Molson will ever see something written on a message board.  But I still think it's worthwhile to have posts like these.  Here, on Twitter, wherever - if there's any chance that fans have of actually changing the mind of the ownership it's going to be because we collectively manage to get across the fact that things are not alright (and that the dissatisfaction is about more than just a losing season).

Well, that or he might realize once they stop making as much money.  But based on your signature above, and on the feelings expressed by a lot of people on this fan site, that might not be too far off either as more people simply lose interest.

We need a total revamp from Ownership on down and a renewed commitment to the fans just like the Laffs did with theirs IMO. The Management of this team has already shown how they hold the fans in contempt by attempting to have us be satisfied with mediocrity. With this Owner and this GM, the Stanley Cup will remain a distant memory.

Thing is, you cant fire an owner.  The owner can do pretty much whatever he wants with his asset.  The hope is that he will remain a silent owner and allow the person he hires to do their job.  In this case, thats what has happened, but the problem is: He hired the wrong guy.

A number of people have suggested that he (Molson) resign as president and allow a new guy to step in and oversee things.  I think thats at least a step in the right direction but at the end of the day, unfortunately, its Molson's decision.

We would probably need to see the overall value of the Montreal Canadiens plummet to see ownership 'fired'.

Montreal Canadiens fans have had and continue to have a very low tolerance for BS. Therefore I think that the fans themselves will eventually effect the necessary changes in Ownership and Management IMO. Whether it be by boycotting Molson products, non attendance to the games etc.

We definitely deserve better, starting with an apology to the fans and a tangible commitment to win the Stanley Cup.

Dear Geoff,

The fans are not as gullible as you are... buy a better mirror that will help you see the wool being pulled over your eyes by a sly fox.

Unless, of course, you are not being transparent and have made a deal with the devil to hide your own mistakes.

Watching that presser and seeing those two characters together reminded me of 1: the foxhole syndrome. 2: MB clearly has Molson hoodwinked. MB is like a politician and a bad vacuum cleaner salesman but Molson doesn't see any of the dirt left over on the floor.

When Molson feels the pain from the lack of sales and fan support next season, let's see what happens.

I had an extremely busy few weeks, and it was quite easy to forget about the Montreal Canadiens. I missed four games in a row to end the season and didn't watch the season closing game. Both of those the first time in almost a decade.

I get that I'm not the target audience you want, Mr. Molson, but perhaps this anecdote isn't totally worthless.

On the lighter side quoting from Twitter:

Bergevin and Molson's first duet album will be entitled "Transparent Attitude" featuring hits such as "The Foxhole" and "It's On Me" ;)

It also has a cover song of the Eurythmics"Would I lie to You?".

With Yzerman stepping down and Brisebois taking over the reigns in TB, that takes one of the primary replacement candidates off the list for the Habs. I'd strongly suggest, Mr. Molson, that you fire Bergevin and replace him with Timmins now, before someone else snatches him up and we have no one to turn to.

P.S. No to Patrick Roy. No to hiring someone who's a re-tread through the organization.

Dear Mr. Molson,, I know you don't know too much about running an NHL hockey team, but when you hired a panel of so called "hockey experts" to find a GM, you expected and hoped they would find the best candidate. Sadly, you were wrong. I know you signed off on hiring MB and the panel decided that he was the best GM applicant available. Unfortunately, they didn't get the best GM available. As long as you abide by this idiotic notion that the GM must be a Francophone, then you're missing out of numerous potential GMs. who might carry this great franchise to greater glory.

You can right this sinking ship!!!!

Bergevin wasn't even the best Fracophone candidate at the time. But hey, foxhole buddies.
