Report: Max Pacioretty traded to San Jose

It's really amazing how little I seem to care about whether this trade happens or not. I'm kind of just assuming the team will be terrible this year anyways, Max won't be re-signed, and MB is going to mess up the trade, so it almost doesn't matter what happens. At least if a trade happens today we can stop wondering about it.

Elliotte Friedman said he's heard denial it's true. Tons of others reporting it's being reviewed by NHL though.

Every trade Bergevin has made should have been reviewed by the league.  Who does San Jose have that is any value to us?

So... what's going on here? No trade? Trade? Maybe a trade?

Trade is off. Pierre LeBrun reported that there was a deal made, but Max couldn't agree on an extension, so it fell through. This is probably why Max fired his agent. The same thing happened with L.A. earlier this week. The plan seems to be to start the season with him in the lineup.

Yeah, seems like Max is reluctant to sign extensions with the California teams. Wonder if that's cause he just doesn't want to sign an extension or because he wants to be on the East coast closer to where he has family (NY state or Florida state).

At this point, it's almost better for us to keep him... hopefully, he can get back to form and increase his trade value by showing he can score, and maybe closer to the deadline there's a team that's more willing to part with a 1st rounder and more to put them over the top.

Would be interesting to know what the return was.  Doubt if we'll find out though.

The LA deal was rumored to be working around Jarret Anderson-Dolan.

As for SJ, they gave up their 1st rounder in 2019 in the Kane deal. The trade talk and multiple discussions with Wilson came out today, so the Sharks had already spent this year's 1st rounder, and i highly doubt they'd want to give up the 2020 1st rounder and be without one going forward two years in a row. So in that case, any deal really has to involve a high-end prospect if you're not getting a 1st rounder back. Their best center prospect is a kid named Josh Norris, so maybe Norris and something like Timo Meier or Hertl???

Personally unless the return was ROR or something similar I am glad Max is staying. With Chucky gone we absolutely need his scoring. I also love him as a player , I think he brings a lot to the team. If we can get a ROR or JT or another center of some sort we could probably still compete. With Weber back 100% if Price plays even decent things could be interesting. I'm glad this trade fell through. If he has another good year but we're still out of it he could be traded at the deadline.

I was actually hoping for something like Calgary got acquiring both Lindholm (C) and Hanifin (LD) which would have addressed current needs (but trades are hard for our GM). That said Pacioretty does do many things that are assets. However, I have never thought of him as a #1 left winger and believe his value as a support player is more accurate... He can score, he plays a decent two-way game and he is quite good on the penalty kill. But he is not a leader on the ice.

I'm disappointed. I want Max to be traded because I want the roster to be reshaped over the next few years. Here is an asset we absolutely cannot afford to sign to an extension that we are going to lose for less and less return as time goes on. I guess it will be a trade deadline deal? Hopefully.

Agreed. But trades are hard for our GM... When another Canadian team can do this, it begs the question why our Gm couldn't put together a decent offer that would include Max.

i agree.  I dont want to 'give him away' but at the same time I dont think resigning him makes sense for us. Its not that he's not a great player, its just that we are not close to winning right now.

Patches, Weber, Petry - they should all be moved for young assets (in the  18 - 24 range) who can be prime time with guys like Drouin, Domi, Mete, and just in time for the new guard of Kotkaniemi, Poehling and others.

I get that we're probably not trading Price - and honestly, I can live with one massive contract and Goalies are often good, deep into their 40s, but the others, it makes no sense to keep them.   Unless MB honestly thinks we're adding Tavares and a #1LD.

patchy is the face of everything that is wrong with the habs:

thinking we have something better than we do.

the fact that the return is well short of what we want tells you that the rest of the league sees him objectively for what he really is. just take what we can get and start turning the page on this terrible roster.

All this trade talk is likely to help Bergevin in the negotiation of a new contract. If teams will not give up too much for him monetarily and his trade value is low. Bergevin may succeed in retaining him at a reduced rate. Interesting dance taking place. He will be worth less the longer we hold on to him as he gets closer to being a UFA and he risks decreasing his value further if he has a poor start to the season probably losing term and value. We could back into a contract here soon

But what motivation will Max have knowing the Habs don't want him and other teams look at his value as low. We don't need him to be a bigger floater than he already is.

Yeah, if its true that the trades actually got to the stage where they fell apart because Max wouldnt sign an extension then i think its pretty clear we need to trade him.  You try not once but twice to trade a player, im thinking that player is going to think he's not in your future plans...
