He's always had trouble at the AHL level for some reason. His NHL number are considerably better (i know, much smaller sample size) but some players (very small amount) do perform better at the NHL level. Maybe its the advantage of having Waite there every single day, I dont know, but id be ok giving him a shot. At this point i have more confidence in CL than id in Niemi. BigTed3 Posted February 22, 2019 Report Share Posted February 22, 2019 Habs play the Leafs next and have a lot of road games coming up, but if you look, many of them are against teams who will conceivably be sellers at the deadline. After the trade deadline, we face NJ, Det, NYR, LA, Ana, and Det again as 6 of our next 8 games. So that's a bunch of games against non-playoff locks who might have depleted their rosters by then. Could be something to try and take advantage of... the end of our season is brutal, with games against Wpg, TB, Was, and Tor (unless those teams have clinched and are resting players) so it's imperative our next 3-4 weeks are played well. I know a lot of those teams are below us, but they're the scary teams to play this time of year. Lose teams with jobs on the line are usually tough down the stretch. Nah, it is the level we are at compared to the leafs. imagine us with just one of Tavares or Matthews or a Nylander we would be transformed. we are a good team not a great team but i feel we are in a good position to advance as long as we don't do something stupid right now. JK is going to be an impact player in a couple of years he is already very good and we have some good stuff coming up in the off season i think we may be able to poach some talent to get us over the hump but it is too expensive and the trade deadline at least most of the time. Combine that with the lousy coach that everyone thinks is a genius and we lose 6-3. Just pray that MB stands pat at the deadline. I personally don't want to stand pat but also not willing to mortgage the future the one A list prospect I would be willing to listen to offers for would be Poeling as we are deep at centre for the next few years and he could potentially walk away for nothing which at this point to me seems likely. Especially when the college is right by their home - and their brother plays on the team! At this point there's absolutely no reason to believe he will walk. But I will be very worried if he doesn't sign at the end of this season. At that point there is nothing stopping him from just doing what he wants. Watching our 4th line on Saturday was a disgrace, so we traded for a decent face off man in Thompson who is too friggin slow to go anything other than face offs. Yes Price probably should have stopped the first goal and the second was just a total fluke, but we are in desperate need of a D man that can hit and move people from the front of the net. Not acceptable as a back-up. - Petry: A... solid season. - Mete: B... has come back revived, but still no goals. - Weber: B-... has really tailed off. - Kulak: B-... a pleasant surprise in a 3rd-pairing role. - Reilly: C+... passable but not great. - Benn: C+... has really picked up his game since being allowed to be a 3rd pairing guy only. - Alzner: F... as he was. - Domi: A... still the class of the forwards. - Gallagher: A... another solid year as a scorer. - Tatar: A... playing above expectations. - Danault: A-... quietly putting together his best year. - Shaw: A-... solid when healthy - Kotkaniemi: B... up and down year offensively but solid for an 18-year old. - Byron: B-... hasn't taken the next step with increased ice time but still good. - Armia: C+... some good things at both ends but needs to finish at the net. - Lehkonen: C... like Armia. - Drouin: C-... the points are there but the effort is lacking far too often. - Peca: C-... decent for a 4th liner. - Hudon: D... has regressed this year, not playing to his strengths. - Deslauriers: F... the Niemi of position players. - Julien: B+... if he gave up the love affair with Deslauriers, he's done a lot of things right. The PP still needs fixing. - Bergevin: B... off-season moves have worked out. Hasn't addressed the LHD issue but hasn't panicked and made a dumb move to find a patchwork solution. I assume that means he was trying to land a top flight LD (or maybe a sniper like stone). In either case, Im glad he balked. Those are going to be two cornerstone players and even if we do decide to, for example, consider trading a Poehling, it should be in the summer, when there is time to really work out a deal that meets all our needs. Coming in to the season I think most people would have been happy with 22g 37a for the whole season - so the fact he has 18 games left, makes his season already amazing, point wise. (not even getting into the fact that he's been great at both ends of the ice and has given our centre depth a huge boost). So what are the bets at what he ends the season at, point wise? Right now he's projecting at 75 points but im curious if anyone thinks he'll fall short of that - or maybe break 80? It would take a great finish for him to end the season at PPG (which would be the first time anyone has since Kovalev) but its still possible too (and Drouin usually finished the season strong so if that line stays together...) He likes stability, he seems to refuse to swap Danault and Kotkaniemi, and these trios have worked a few times. I don't think anyone could have expected this but there's no doubt that he's been absolutely lights out this season. The 18 year old now has 31 points in his rookie season which includes 11 goals and 20 assists. Kotkaniemi now joins Rasmus Dahlin, Patrik Laine, Ilya Kovalchuk and Jaromir Jagr as the only European players to score 30+ points at the age of 18.
