Luke Richardson Named Assistant Coach of The Habs

Recommended Posts

The 49-year-old was an assistant coach with the New York Islanders last season and was with Hockey Canada during the 2016-17 season, winning the Spengler Cup as Team Canada’s head coach reaching the final at the Deutschland Cup as an assistant coach. Richardson was an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators for three seasons starting in 2009-10 and then spent four seasons as head coach of the AHL’s Binghamton Senators before joining Hockey Canada.

Added Canadiens head coach Claude Julien: “I’m delighted with the addition of Luke Richardson to our coaching staff. Luke is a very credible hockey person and a very knowledgeable coach. We undertook a process to select a coach with specific criteria in mind, and after taking the time to meet with several candidates, we’re very happy that Luke accepted to join our group. He has already been told that his role on our staff will be to work with our defensemen.”

Richardson will join Julien, associate coach Kirk Muller and assistant coach Dominique Ducharme behind the Canadiens’ bench next season. Richardson replaces J.J. Daigneault, who was fired after last season.

He doesn't speak French, does he ?

Maybe they couldn't find any qualified Francophone candidates.

We have had lots of assistants that dont speak Francais.   Seems like a weird hire but i never really have too much of an opinion on assistants (unless its someone like Muller or Gallant that I hope will one day be head coach even though i should know it will never happen as they dont speak french).

Assistants I can remember who either didn't speak French or I don't know if they did or not because they're primarily Anglos (but could speak French too):

- Gallant

- Muller

- Pearn

- Shutt

- Jarvis

- Cunneyworth

- Melanson

- Ladouceur (French name but from Ontario so I don't know)

- Rick Green

- Dave King

I don't know, it gets mentioned less, but I think there have been a number of non-Franco assistants. And FWIW, the Habs reportedly interviewed Gallant when they fired Therrien and were set to offer him the job if Julien wasn't liberated by Boston. Who knows if they actually would have done it if push came to shove, but at least someone seems to understand there aren't that many great Francophone head coaching candidates.
