We drove down to the American Southwest back in June. Along the way, we stopped at a number of places that had interesting things to see. On our 2nd day we went to the largest train shunting yard in the world. An average of 139 trains and over 14,000 railroad cars pass through Bailey Yard every day,  It covers a total expanse of 2,850 acres (4.45 sq mi; 11.5 km2) and is over 8 miles (13 km) in length and 2 miles (3.2 km) wide. The yard has 200 separate tracks totaling 315 miles (507 km) of track, 985 switches, 766 turnouts,[2] and 17 receiving and 16 departure tracks. Here are just a few of the pics. It runs 24/7, 365 days, and employs 2,600 people. Forv those of you who might be more inquisitive here's a link about it.

Our 3rd day on the trip we stopped a small town that was just intended for a sleepover, however, after doing some more research on the town, (pop. about 3,000), I found that across the interstate was a paved road that is the highest paved road in North America. So, we drove up. The road itself was barely a road but it went to the top. These are just a few of the pics I took.

Check out the Union Pacific Challenger. The largest passenger steam locomotive ever built. The only thing larger was their Big Boy.

This museum has the only Challenger 3900 series steam locomotive on public display in the world. Number 3977 is not only on display, you can actually climb up and get the engineer’s view, which we did. In addition to the 3900 series is Unit 6922. The 6900 series diesel locomotives were the largest ever made.

Zion National Park, in Utah. The colour in the pics don't do it justice. If you are ever within 200 miles,,,, go there. I personally feel that it rivals the Grand Canyon. I have lots of dash-cam vids of it too, but can't post them here (files are too big).

The 1st 3 pics are of a landing craft that was at Dunkirk. USS LST 393 is an LST-1-class tank landing ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. She is one of only two LCTs to survive in original configuration; 1,051 were built.  LCT 393 is credited with carrying 9,135 soldiers – more than one-half of an Army division – and 3,248 vehicles ranging from Long Tom howitzers to Jeeps. Records show she also carried 5,373 prisoners of war and 817 casualties.

The USS Silversides was the 3rd most successful submarines in the Pacific Theater of World War II, with 23 confirmed sinkings, totalling more than 90,000 long tons (91,444 t). It has 10 torpedo tubes and carried 24 torpedoes.

The sub and LCT are on display in Muskegan Mi.

Just a few of the pics I took
