Now reporting that he's made it official,,,, he's retiring. Thank you for your service Pleky. We'll miss that turtleneck..

This makes sense.

Was a great player through some very tough times.  Glad he got his 1000th game  - and with us no less.

Any doubts this was planned when Pleky signed?

I actually think it was unplanned. Otherwise they would have just done this after game 1000.

I think they signed him & told him he probably wouldnt play the whole year & he knew that going into it but when he got injured he decided he was ready to hang them up. I think the final "this is the end" decision probably came from Pleks, not management.

A solid and underrated player on a number of teams without very good rosters. His time has passed and it was a mistake to bring him back (and probably to have kept him for as long as we did before this), but this doesn't diminish what he did in his career. Wishing him all the best.

I actually think its the other way......I think they were totally intending on having him play every day and compete with peca for the 3rd line. I think Kotkaniemi earned his roster spot and that eliminated a roster spot. They probably sat down with him and told him he's going to be a healthy scratch most of the time and I think he didn't want that.

Anyway this is fantastic news, all respect to pleky who I think was one of the more underrated players of his time and could have been a selke nominee many times. He has been completely useless for the last 2 even 3 seasons, it was time. I did not want to see him playing for us anymore under really any circumstances. Id rather be calling up kids from laval.

Cheers pleky, you had some great seasons,go drink some delicious czech beer and play tennis

Yeah this was 100% unplanned. It's pretty clear that Plekanec was signed because the intention was to run Danault, Domi, Plekanec, and Peca as the four centers, but Kotkaniemi ended up being too good to cut and the team rightly chose to keep Peca around as the 4C instead of platooning Plekanec and Peca there.

There's no way they expected this, Kotkaniemi is the youngest player in the league and was not expected to be an NHL regular this year. I also have a hard time believing even the most optimistic cheerleader in Habs management genuinely expected Domi to be this effective as a 2C. They signed him to play a middle six role in the event Kotkaniemi and/or Domi couldn't hack it at C, and when both guys cemented themselves as middle six centers they no longer needed him beyond occasional 4C play and at this point in his career Plekanec doesn't want to sit in the press box.

I love how some people on here are now thanking Pleky for his service when at the beginning of the year they were insulting management and coaches for resigning him. Can we all say Hippocrates!!!

Yes he is past his prime & should not have been resigned by MB & people were right to say so. However he was a great player & teammate on this team for several seasons and deserves to be recognized for it.

We're better off without Paccioretty and  Plekanec IMO.

2 overpaid, under-performing players.

Thank goodness it's over.

Actually quite the opposite for Paccioretty. He was the most underpaid player in the league based on the numbers he put up. Still happy to see him go though since he's a one dimensional player. Pleky on the other hand was always a competitor and was put in difficult situations due to his defensive upside. He was an asset for the Canadiens while he was in his prime. Nice to see him retire on good terms. I always liked him as a player, he always gave 100 %. He was a true professional.
