kinot-2
IT'S GAMEDAY AGAIN WE WELCOME THE WINNIPEG JETS TO THE CONFINES OF THE BELL CENTER Winnipeg Jets at (34-16-3) Montreal Canadiens (30-18-6) THE BIG MATCHUP JETS SHOOTERS VS CAREY PRICE The Jets were relatively opportunistic early against Martin Jones on Tuesday, scoring twice on six shots on goal, but were unable to score again in the 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks. Canadiens goalie Carey Price is enjoying a solid season, with 22 wins in 40 games, a 2.53 goals-against average and a .916 save %. He’s been tough against the Jets, going 12-5-4 with a 2.25 goals-against average and .923 save % in 21 career games. 5 keys to the game WELCOME BACK After missing the past 15 games with an ankle injury, the Jets are expected to have defenceman Dustin Byfuglien back in the lineup on Thursday. He has four goals and 29 points in 31 games this season and was playing at a Norris-calibre level prior to suffering the injury on an innocent-looking hit from Minnesota Wild forward Luke Kunin on Dec. 29. Byfuglien won’t be eased back into things, especially with the status of Josh Morrissey (foot) up in the air. MITIGATE THE DISPARITY The Jets still have one of the best power plays in the NHL and while they are the best team with the man-advantage on home ice, their efficiency is much worse on the road. Why that is remains a mystery, but it’s a fact. The Jets are coming off a game where they went zero-for-five with the power play and allowed a shorthanded goal in overtime, but they generated numerous Grade A opportunities and had a power-play marker taken off the board after a successful coach’s challenge for offside. LOCK IN THE SIGHTS The recent dry spell for Jets sniper Patrik Laine has been well documented and his difficulties continued on Tuesday, but he generated four shots on goal and had 12 shot attempts. Laine needs to keep shooting his way out of the slump, though with six shots that missed the net, the Finnish winger simply needs to trust his shot and release rather than trying to be so precise. FIRST MEETING Thursday marks the first time Canadiens winger Joel Armia will face his former team. Armia was a dependable player with the Jets, but he became a salary-cap casualty this past summer in a deal that included goalie Steve Mason, who was subsequently bought out. Armia has continued to be a reliable, two-way player, chipping in six goals and 13 points in 29 games this season. BEWARE OF GALLAGHER With two goals in Tuesday’s win over the Anaheim Ducks, Canadiens right-winger Brendan Gallagher is up to 21 goals on the season, which leads his team. Gallagher is a willing combatant who goes to the tough areas to score, but he’s been limited to three goals and seven points in 12 career games against the Jets.
