MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Dale Weise and defenceman Christian Folin from the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday in exchange for David Schlemko and Byron Froese.

The Canadiens announced the trade Saturday morning.

Weise, a former Canadien, has played 42 games in 2018-19 with five goals and six assists. The 30-year-old had 59 points in 152 games with Montreal from 2013-2016.

Weise has 54 goals and 66 assists in 481 career NHL regular-season games since his debut in 2010-11. The Winnipeg native has also played for New York (Rangers), Vancouver and Chicago.

Folin, a 27-year-old from Sweden, has played in 26 games with Philadelphia this season, recording two assists. The defenceman is averaging 15:33 of ice time per game.

Folin has 38 points (seven goals, 31 assists) and 96 penalty minutes in 209 career NHL regular-season games with Minnesota, Los Angeles and Philadelphia since his debut in 2013-14.

Schlemko, who was acquired in a trade with Vegas in June 2017, recorded two assists in 18 games with the Canadiens in 2018-19.

Froese signed as a free agent with Montreal in July 2017. He was leading the American Hockey League's Laval Rocket with 14 goals

I guess he wanted Frolin? In order to dump Schlemko he had to take Weise back? Weise was the main target & MB is back to hiding behind plants again?

He's got to be worried about Shaw is all I can think

shaw is playing tonight

I mean I think Weise is more useful than Schlemko right now

Nothing to really love or hate about this deal. I'm mostly neutral but probably a little more positive than negative

He still could be worried about Shaw though because one more concussion & that;s it for him.

Not really familiar with Folin. But it seems the trade was about him. As Alzner gets sent back down and Folin will report to the Habs. Weise goes straight to Laval.

Weise should thank David Desharnais for making him a 14 goal scorer, which turned him into a millionaire. He has never played well since.

I'm just thinking how much they're going to pay Weise?  I thought the reason they let him go in the first place was because they were unwilling to raise his pay above $1 million +. Weise then got the increased salary from Philadelphia.

On paper, I would like to believe that Weise is better than any of our 4th liners - Chaput, Peca, Deslaurier, even Agostino.

I think its basically a depth move for the playoffs.

Weise is not great but is probably on part with some of our 4th liners.   As long as Weise is in instead of DLo, not as well as, Im ok with it. Plus who knows, he has played his best hockey in a habs uni.

Folin is probably here because Juulsen looks to be done for the season.  We may be strong at RD but after Weber & Petry we have Benn and then... who?  Folin is basically some insurance on that bottom pair RD.

We didnt give up anything, we didnt really gain much although you could certainly argue we got the better players back. Folin is UFA this summer.  Schlemko and Weise both have one more year so its pretty much a wash.

“It feels absolutely surreal,” Weise said when contacted by Sportsnet. “It’s just crazy. I don’t even know what to feel right now. The first time I got traded to Montreal it was a dream come true, and ever since I left I just haven’t felt like the same player. My emotion–it just hasn’t felt the same since I left. To come back now, it just feels so surreal. I’m so excited. This is where I’ve always wanted to be; the team, the fans, the ownership, the coaches, just everything, it’s everything I want to be a part of.”

It certainly doesn't hurt to have a player who loves being a Montreal Canadien.  I thought he was a decent hockey player when he was a Hab last time. Hopefully he can bounce back and be a solid contributor.

Weise was decent his first time around in Montreal. Not sure how well the older version will do. The biggest problem his last go around was his over usage by MT in situations he shouldn't have been used in. MT had a love affair going with him and it's likely the reason he wasn't resigned by MB. Can't play him if he's not on the roster. Similar situation with Desharnais.

Our 4th line was really exposed in the Leaf game and were clearly mismatched. An upgrade is most definitely needed. You would think it wouldn't be tough to upgrade over a guy like DLO but CJ keeps throwing him out there. Sure he hits more then anyone else, but sometimes taking that extra effort to go out of your way to nail a guy, leaves everybody else to cover while he gets his butt back in the play. He doesn't have the wheels to do it, and you can often see him trailing well behind.

If Weise does make the cut, i certainly can't see him being used in the same manner he was with MT. Even if he came back as strong as before, i can't see him in our top 9 or on the PP. Then again,,,, our PP has been so brutal i wouldn't count it out.

And if he can play as good as he did with us in the playoffs. Remember how he drove Lucic nuts.

So we give up a promising young player (Agostino) to get an old slow offensively challenged player (Weise)

Agostino is not young.  He's 27 (in 2 months).  He is now joining his 5th NHL team.

He's played 58 nhl games for us, Calgary, St Louis and Boston.  I think you're really grasping at straws to call him a "promising young player."

I swear MB just amazes me, please let a Zamboni run him over soon to save us

Hmm, Weise is not slow Agostino is not young and quite frankly i much prefer our 4th line right now compared to the game against the Leafs. the playoffs are coming and we are going to be in them unless we fall off a cliff and play gets a bit heavy as the stretch runs comes in so having some experience on the 4th line that can still skate is going to help us and what we gave up to get it is next to nothing.
