WASHINGTON - Here are five things you need to know ahead of Thursday's game against the Capitals at Capital One Arena.

1. The Canadiens played one of their best games of the season on Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Bell Centre. The Habs came back from one-goal leads twice against the best team in the NHL on their way to an important 4-2 win. Centerman Nate Thompson scored his first goal as a Hab, while Joel Armia lit the lamp in the second period to set a new career high with his 13th of the season. It wouldn't be until Artturi Lehkonen scored in the final frame, however, that the Habs would take the lead and run with it. Max Domi scored the fourth goal for Montreal.

2. Thanks to the win, the Canadiens have the same number of points as the Blue Jackets, but Columbus owns the tiebreaker as they have more regulation/overtime wins. That said, Montreal could find itself back in playoff position on Thursday because the Jackets are idle until their Friday night tilt with the Rangers in New York. As for the Carolina Hurricanes, they currently have 95 points, one more than both Montreal and Columbus. The Canes welcome the New Jersey Devils to PNC Arena on Thursday.

3. This is the third and final meeting of the season between the Canadiens and Capitals, who haven't done battle since November. The Habs won the first showdown 6-4 at the Bell Centre, a game in which rookie Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored his first two NHL goals. Todd Reirden's troops took the second game 5-4 in overtime thanks to Lars Eller's game winner.

4. The Caps are riding high right now, having won four of their last five games. As can be expected, captain Alex Ovechkin leads his team with 51 goals and has become just the third player in League history to hit the 50-goal plateau eight times in his career. Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky are the other two. The 33-year-old Russian is also the Caps' top point-getter with 89, while centers Nicklas Backstrom (74 points) and Evgeny Kuznetsov (72 points) round out Washington's top-3.

5. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. You can catch all the action on TSN2 and RDS on television, and on TSN 690 and 98,5 fm on the radio.

Another must win. So many must wins in the last few weeks. #musty

Yup. This is so stressful on the fans I just can't imagine what the players are going through. Will they crack under this much pressure and put in a stinker?

Artturi Lehkonen says we will win the next two games and make the playoffs, so... we can trust him, right?

I feel like there's a really good chance we will win both games.

Assuming that happens, we have to hope for one of the following scenarios:

- Carolina loses one (or even an OT lose I think would work?) of their remaining games.
- Columbus loses one of their 2 remaining games.
- Pittsburgh loses both of their remaining games. (one loss in regulation, one lost in OT would do it too i think)

If (and its still a big if) we can win both of our games, we just need 1 of those 3 scenarios & we're in.  Hope is not lost yet for sure.   Exciting times.

Tie-breaker info:

If at the conclusion of the regular season two teams competing for the final playoff berth in a conference are tied in points, ROW (regulation plus overtime wins), points in their season series (excluding the first home game for the team that has the extra game) and goal differential for the season, the following procedure will apply:

* A tiebreaking game will be played.

...

(I believe this is up to date.)

Yes i think they added this last year?

its so incredibly unlikely though, considering Points, ROW, Season Series and Goal differential all have to be even. I feel like we're probably never going to see one.

Caps expected lineup:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Vrana-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Hagelin-Eller-Connolly
Burakovsky-Dowd-Boyd

Carlson-Jensen
Orlov-Niskanen
Orpik-Djoos

We have to be wary of that Eller guy.

So do I.

I had to look it up to find out what was after ROW, so I figured I'd post it here.

Darn, why couldn't Washington just rest some players?

Doing some "high IQ research" (got that from a flatearther!), I found that the Caps play the Isles (Sat.) who are within reach of the Caps. So maybe ...

The Caps really, really want that division title so they can hang another "We Won The Division" banner. :lol:

(I'm gonna tell Eller you said that!  :P)

Also, there's the tiny detail of avoiding the Pens, who they might end up playing if they slip to 2nd.

The way the Pens have been playing, they're going to be lucky to be 1st WC!
