ramcharger440
Right now we are in good shape. we had a solid comeback year where we saw some players develop and some good trades. we are finally solid at center not super star solid but quite good. Price played much better and we had some players step up on D. we have some weak spots on special teams but this off season should help that out. our main weak points remain first pairing LHD and a very solid backup goalie not some guy in development but a real deal guy we can count on!. we have i think 10 draft picks and plenty of quality forwards we could package to fix things so lets see what our glorious leadership group come up with in the next week or two........if they mange to get this right we could be a dead solid team this year. jennifer_rocket
I'd like to believe we're in a good position to continue upward, but... the NHL is a fickle thing. We could just as easily miss the playoffs again in 2019-2020. I like that it appears we have some good prospects in the system. Building through the draft seems important. However, I still don't have confidence in the current management team to bring this team to contender status. We'll probably strike out in free agency. However, it would probably be worse if we overpay for someone, handicapping the team for years to come. I dream that we might be able to sign Erik Karlsson and trade Shea Weber. Get's me hoping for a miracle every season. It was that stupid story about how Karlsson was hoping for competitive offers from Ottawa and Montreal on July 1st. I should've known better. But money talks, and Karlsson couldn't have gotten an 8th year as a UFA, never mind the AAV he hit with SJ... so if it came down to 92M to stay in SJ vs. 70-75M to go somewhere else, maybe that was enough to sway him. Indeed. That money is absolutely a huge get for him. Credit to San Jose. They have the cap space, he's the player they want, and it looks like they're gonna make it happen before he can test the market. I wonder how that shapes San Jose's plans for Thornton or Pavelski. Or if there's another defender they might consider moving.

habs1952
No way in hell I would have paid a 29 yr. old EK 11+ mil/yr.

Drew Doughty and Erik Karlsson have set the bar very, very high for top-tier defenders... although, one might argue that Doughty isn't a "top-tier" defender anymore. It's mind-boggling, but these players are only going to make more and more as long as the cap keeps increasing.

The good news is that if we ever decided to trade Weber (not likely) his cap hit looks more and more like 'good value' especially if he can put up some big numbers again next year. Indeed. And heck, now Carey Price is only the seventh highest paid player in the league. In another few seasons he might drop out of the top-20 for all we know! But yes, Weber's value is probably the highest it's ever going to be now or very soon. I wonder if there might be a scenario where we unload him in the next 2-3 seasons and his contract still looks decent for what the other will be getting? I just cant see it. I think MB coveted Weber since his Chicago days. I think he just ignores that Man Mountain is slowing and considers him untouchable because of his "intangibles." He may wait longer than most reasonable GMs would, but there may come a day when he looks to move on from Weber. Will it be 2021-22? Will it be 2023-24? Will it be... never? I keep saying its not a bad contract. He's a #1 D man making second pairing money, and the actual money he makes is even less than the money he is getting paid. And if retires early, its not damaging to habs or any future team but to Nashville alone. I have no interest in moving him at all, unless we fall apart this year and do a complete rebuild which I don't think is happening
BigTed3
Shinkaruk, Lernout, and Audette will all not receive qualifying offers from the Habs and become UFA's July 1st. No big losses there.
kinot-2
Meanwhile the team has offered Charles Hudon a qualifying offer, according to several reports including Chantal Machabee of RDS. Hudon is said to have turned down the offer, meaning he can either file for salary arbitration or continue to negotiate a new contract with the Canadiens. He only played 32 games with 3 goals last year. I can't see him winning an arbitration case.

I suspect he might be rewarded with a one-way contract as opposed a two-way deal. Not sure how often arbitrators have handed out two-way contracts. I believe someone mentioned Montreal had offered him a two-way deal, which he rejected.

I always thought you work out a trade with Seattle in their expansion draft year where you package Weber and Price to help them to the cap floor in a swap of conditional 1st rounders between the teams. They can still grab a player you leave exposed in the expansion draft, you just basically transplant your 2 veteran leaders to Seattle to help them establish a healthy culture in the dressing room.
