Filling the LD spot should of been done already and should of been MB,s main job this summer. Instead he was content to make headlines with his offer sheet, which was never going to happen. He seems only interested in keeping his high profile job and scrapping by.

Calgary still needs to clear cap space and T.J. Brodie has to be available at a pretty low price. Not being able to play LD because he prefers right makes no sense to me.  If MB makes the move to get a guy like Brodie, the scoring from the wingers will take care of itself.

Two issues with taking Brodie for me

1. He PREFERS the right side not that he can't play the left just he PREFERS the right like Benn

2. Gardiner is still available for nothing but cap hit. He is a gamble but no doubt is skilled offensively. I would rather offer 5.5-6 for 1-2 years as a prove it contract

Cole Caulfield today stated that he "expects to play on the same line as Turcotte next year"... which would suggest he also expects to be headed the University route next season. Don't believe he's committed yet, but it would suggest that that's where he and the Habs see him.

its not happening. This was an actual possibility. I don't forsee any trades for LHD, I don't know why ppl still think it will happen. Hope youre right

thats pretty negative? i don't see any reason we can't improve we have the chips to do it we need it just get it done. we don't need a superstar just a good mobile LHD  who can skate and pass that is not 3 feet tall.

We have the chips but we don't have the GM who knows how to cash them in.

I hate to be negative as well but habsisme is right there are just not a lot of teams willing to trade during August unless they are trying to get cap compliant headed into September. That being said there are still options this year cause of the large number of RFA's unsigned and their teams are mostly over or at the cap.

Our GM is almost as incompetent as Dorian in Ottawa, he made the Habs look silly with that stupid offer sheet, he hasn't filled in the whole at LD our glaring weakness.  He could have made the deal to acquire Marleau for that extra first round pick with all that cap space but no he is sitting in a corner pulling his pin.  It's time to see this bafoon go down the road kicking stones!  The cookie monster would be a better GM than MB

I don't think Bergevin is necessarily incompetent, but he does have a job to do and he's not been "successful" in accomplishing certain goals. For me, this has got to be Bergevin's last kick at the can. If we cannot make the post-season this year and if he cannot improve the D, he's got to go. You can't have 7+ years to manage a team and accomplish so little. I appreciate some of the moves he's made and some of the more recent drafting he's done, but it's not enough. A team like Montreal needs to be more competitive than it has been since Marc took over.

I have to agree that the leash will shorten dramatically if Montreal misses the play-offs again this year but I don't think Begevin is incompetent (except for the Alzner contract). Also it would be fair to point out that they barely missed the play-offs this year and that the player turn-over from the previous year amounted to 17 players ...with captain Pacioretty and Galchenyuk gone with Weber out till Xmas and Byron injured Montreal still managed to beat that season by 25 points . Byron will replace Shaw's production if he plays a full season and Chiarot is imo an upgrade over Benn .The season hasn't started and teams rarely do trades in Aug . nor do I think Bergevin is finished yet ...I'd rather reserve judgment until the roster is set and the season is under way..I believe  they will improve on 96 points with a hungry roster and some moving parts

wanting to prove something .

Our RW depth BEFORE trading Shaw, was

gallagher

shaw

armia/lehkonen

weal/whoever

which was absolutely not good enough as it was, and then we traded shaw for cap space we didnt use, and now just passed up a perfectly affordable top 6 winger.

you poor guys thinking he is going to do something....he is going to get a guy from waivers and trade a plug for a different plug and beyond that I do not hold my breath.

there's no plan and this guy is not serious about winning. its about creating the illusion and keeping his job. unless everything goes unbelievably right, which would be no testament to bargain boy anyway, I would expect similar results to last year. bubble team that needs everything to go right to get into the playoffs, with no real horses to make a serious run either way

very reasonable take. well said. at the end of the day, we appreciate that trading and drafting and signing free agents is hard...but thats literally what your job is. if its too hard go be a suit model.

leafs needed a top rd, they traded a good player and got one

so did NYR. so did NJ.

The chiarot signing is just like the epitome of the bergevin habs. honestly, even a playoff appearance that ends in a 1st round fizzle out is more than enough reason to move on.

Montreal will have more points than Toronto with their top right hand d -man come next April..how's that for a prediction ? ...only 9 more months to go to find out
