I would of much rather seen Hudon called back up. Gallagher is one of the teams consistent goal scores and even though Hudon didn't light it up the last time up, I still feel he has more offensive upside than Wiese. Also Hudon can skate. Hopefully he is on the forth line at most. Hasn't Lehk played on the right at times before? Move Suzuki up or Lehk and Poehling to Lehk's spot. Maybe play 7 D instead maybe Fluery could play up on the right?

I was mulling over the same possibilities about Hudon ...maybe  they're trying to give as many people as they can some playing time to shake it up and Weise's wheels are still decent enough….even Vejdemo got a shot …why not Brook and Belzile too ?... 5 guys now out with injuries  if Gallagher doesn't play .. he looked like he got the noodle rattled pretty good  so I expect concussion protocol to be in effect

Great to make matters worse the Habs just recalled Wiese. So our RW is now some form of Weal, Suzuki, Cousins and Wiese. Probably in that order too. This is going to be a long long long second half.

in fairness, Weise cant really be much worse than barber has been. :P

If there was any way we could guarantee a top 3 pick Id be AOK with tanking.   I still think this season is salvageable but the turn around has to happen NOW and with a call up like this one has to assume thats pretty unlikely.

I disagree ... Hudon has proven he is not an NHL player.  At least with Weise, you put him on the 4th line and tell him to crash and bang and you'll get exactly that.

Yeah, it's looking pretty bleak. Not much left of our depth after losing all those guys to injuries. More ice time for the kids I guess, which can be a blessing in disguise. Shouldn't Drouin be back soon, too? I hope we can turn this around but I'm not sure we actually have what it takes, especially now that Toronto and Tampa seem to have hit their stride. A lot would have to go right for us and I just don't see it right now.

I'd guess Drouin is still several weeks away.

Just looked at the wildcard standings. Sigh. Lots of teams battling for those two wildcard spots in the East. Seems like our best bet is actually catching Toronto or Tampa. Gonna be tough to make the post-season.

Yeah. You have to feel like if there werent so many injuries this season might have gone differently but honestly, the forwards have been doing their best to fill those holes.  The problem is and has always been on defense & we've been relatively healthy there (with the exception of the short stint without Mete).

Id really love to just let the kids play. Lets see what Suzuki can do at center with some quality wingers & ice time.  Lets see if JK can find the next gear if you challenge him rather than leave him safely on the 3rd line. What about Poehling? can he get a sniff at a top 6 assignment for a couple of games?

If we're going to miss the playoffs again (which seems more and more likely with each loss) then lets get something out of the season.

With teams that publicly admit they are rebuilding in front of us in the standings, I think we need to admit that we aren't going to make the playoffs again.

We're 0-2 against Detroit, i think that speaks volumes

true but we've beaten St Louis twice , Boston , Islanders ,Washington etc.  this team is really hard to figure ... all in all if not for losses against the likes of Detroit and New Jersey we would still be in thick of it ...there are times when the Habs can look unbeatable and then ….

There's no way of guaranteeing a top 3 pick, but if you finish bottom 3, you have great odds and you are guaranteed a top 6 pick regardless. Not saying that's the path, BUT...

- you look at the standings and I honestly can't see us catching and staying ahead of Boston. Tampa is too good to believe we can outpace them over the full season. And Toronto and Florida also look like better clubs. In the other division, I don't see us catching the Caps or Isles, and we'd really have to find a way of moving ahead of at least a couple of Toronto, Florida, Philly, Carolina, Buffalo, and the Rangers. I'd put the odds of our making the playoffs at maybe 15% right now.

- Even if we do make it, the odds of moving through the playoffs are even lower. Our odds of winning a Cup right now are likely under 1%.

- I've already detailed the issues we're going to have in the summer of 2021, when we will have to make decisions on re-signing Tatar, Danault, Gallagher, Petry, and Armia. I don't see us keeping all of them, and Price/Weber will be two years older to boot. In between, we'll have to worry about a host of RFA's to re-sign, and we have the expansion draft that summer too. I just don't see us being competitive this year and I'd be hard-pressed to see it next year too, at least in terms of being a true Cup contender.

- MB has already made it pretty clear he doesn't want to sacrifice high picks or his best prospects in a trade and that he doesn't see in-season trading as a great option. He also doesn't believe in spending big July 1st. So even if we were to make trades, we're likely looking at complementary parts unless MB decides to blow up the roster. I don't see us acquiring a top-pairing LHD or a sniper via trade, and we really need both those things to be a Cup challenger.

So with all that in mind, I feel like our younger group gives us a better chance of being a nucleus on a contender than our older group. Earlier this year, I think this could have gone either way and MB could have played is cards to add on to our core and make a move. But he's been clear he doesn't want to do that and while I can respect that decision, I also think he needs to move on from certain veterans. Some may see that as subtraction, but I'd see it more as adding on to what you can give your young nucleus to be a Cup winner. We still have younger veterans like Domi and Drouin and Lehkonen and Armia that you could keep around and I think Danault and Gallagher will be two guys the Habs might want to try and re-sign to be the leadership group for the younger players. But I'd like to see players like Kotkaniemi and Suzuki and Poehling and Fleury and maybe even Evans and Brook given bigger roles. We missed the boat developing younger guys like Beaulieu and Tinordi and McCarron and Leblanc before, and we can't play rookies behind the likes of Weise and Barber and Weal and Cousins and so on if we want to give the younger ones valuable experience.

I don't even know that trading Price now is the right move, because I think his value is low. But I absolutely think we should move on from Weber NOW while his value is high. I think we need to look at moving on from Petry and Tatar if not now than next summer or next trade deadline before they become UFA's. Tatar's value is pretty high right now too, so now is the time to sell. And I don't see a role for Byron here long-term either. Right there, you already have a batch of players who could bring back several 1st round picks or top prospects or young NHLers. I see more value in some combination of that than in continuing to hang on to these players and ending up with nothing (or at least less) in return for them in two years.

While I agree with your entire post, I think this is the key to me.

I believe that Molson has already given MB his full trust so its not like he feels like he has to make the playoffs or else. I think its time to make some immediate moves that will have long-term (positive) impact for us - even though those moves will almost certainly be negative, for now.

We just picked up a Scandella for a 4th and traded Reilly to Ottawa so Bergy is shaking the tree looking for nuts. I like both moves Reilly wasn't going anywhere and Scandella helps the backend. We still need a good doctor or some forwards as we are down almost two lines worth of top  forwards

I like the scandella pickup if we make the playoffs and I think by adding him MB has decided that's the goal. You don't trade for a 29 year old UFA if your planning on missing the playoffs. Hope he can fill the top 4 hole we desperately need filled. I am also intrigued about Sturts he seems like another Gallagher type of player hope he works out
