Habs sign Ben Chiarot

hrm.  Lets hope this is just a "part" of the plan. 3 years, 10.5m

He's a #4-5 dman from what ive seen of him, but maybe they think he's being underutilized (like when we get Petry).

The problem is that we have yet another "decent" man in the system.  Thats Mete, Kulak, Chiarot, Reilly, Leskinen Olofsson etc.  All are fine, all are decent but are any capable of being a top pair guy?

Chiarot had a strong playoffs but im still not thinking he's much more than a #4 at best. Maybe the signing was because we are going to trade someone like Kulak as part of a package but on its own its fairly underwhelming.

This is actually a good move. Tough as nails and gets SOME points.

Yeah i dont mind the signing in a vacuum.  Good player, good contract, but not really the answer to our hole at LD. I feel like they are going to go into camp with like 6 guys battling for those 3 slots & just 'hope' something works out.

Seems like an okay deal. I guess Bergevin just doesn't see Gardiner as an option based on his ask. It looks like this season may be another "cusp of making the playoffs" season. We haven't improved in any major way. Maybe we've done just enough to scrap our way into some playoff hockey. I have no idea.

Yeah... I just had a look at his career stats. Seems pretty poor. I would have rather spent more money to get Gardiner.

He‘s also 28 so it‘s safe to say what you see is what you‘ll get. I don’t think the idea is to give him Weber as a partner but what do I know. If he‘s an upgrade on Benn it may turn out to be a good move.

I actually don't mind this signing as he has played with Buff most of the year last year who plays much the same style as Weber maybe it pays off only time will tell. Wish he skated as well as Mete though LOL

the leafs had a glaring need at RD and they traded for tyson barrie

rangers traded for trouba

we signed yet another plug. Bergevin, I had enough of you 2 years ago. I really, truly hope we don't sneak into a playoff spot because this guy needs to be out of here

Yeah. I'm not feeling this signing at all. Gardiner may get overpaid, but he would have filled an actual need. Chiarot doesn't fill a need. He just adds to a glut of bottom-pairing defenders we already have. He might be cheaper than Gardiner, but it's wasted money, IMO.

Chiarot is manageable at 3.5 and has a good shot. He is good on the PK and can always be traded for a pick down the road. Bergy needs to create some competition for jobs at LD and this will help. Probably an upgrade on Benn who is getting a little older so I don't really have a problem with this signing. I prefer staying away from Gardiner and his back and the term that he wants. Time will tell on that choice. Bergy has about 10 Million to sign Armia and Lehkonen. Perhaps he will sign a couple more. I prefer he uses some of it to offer a buyout on a contract for a pick or two.

Yeah. I feel like we're stagnating a bit though. If we're just going to resign our RFAs and go into the season with what we have, sure, try to pickup another pick by trading for a junk contract and buying someone out. However, I was really expecting this team to move in a positive direction this season. It feels more like we'll be treading water.

I does feel that way right now but it is only day 4 of free agency.

I think the impulse for all of us - myself included - after 7 years of MB is to think "i guess thats it" but I honestly think that to solve our #1LD problem we need a trade. And trades often dont happen in week one of free agency because teams are still hoping UFAs will sign with them.

So while I agree, so far this has been totally underwhelming, i do think there's a decent chance we'll see more - and hopefully much better - changes in the near future.  I dont have a problem with any of these signings so far - in a vacuum - but we do still have big holes that need addressing.

i like the move. i would like to see him next to Petry and we pick up another more offensive minded Dman to play next to Webber but this is ok. i like Mete but he has not scored a goal yet and that is 120 games! we give him a lot of slack because we like him but he really really needs to produce or he is gong to have a short career!

Chiarot ranked second on the Jets with 139 blocked shots and third with 171 hits.

Because he's probably chasing the play most of the time. Or because Winnipeg didn't have the puck when he was on the ice. These types of defenders are a dime a dozen in today's game. I don't know why we had to go and acquire one for three years. At least MB didn't give him a NTC this time.
