I think it’s because it’s his decision to make. Montreal can choose to assign him to Laval or bring him up or not to sign him at all, but whether or not he stays in school is entirely up to him. Regis22
Quote Bergevin might do well to take a page from Ken Holland’s book when it came to signing Dylan Larkin to a contract after his freshman year at the University of Michigan. Larkin desperately wanted to play in the NHL and it turns out he was absolutely right. But when they were negotiating his entry-level deal, Holland said directly to Larkin and said, “If you’re staring out the window of a bus in the middle of the night on a road trip from Milwaukee to Grand Rapids, remember it was you who made this decision.”

But the question is whether our evaluation team believes he'd be better served with us vs. college. Since he can go directly to Laval I feel like it probably makes more sense to get him into our system sooner rather than later, (no matter how good an NCAA team may be, you want to develop players with your own people when possible) but id tell the kid: unless you blow us away, so that we HAVE to keep you with the team, expect to be riding the bus in the minors next year. Fair point - a lot of these kids are confident overachievers and expect some quick success thinking it’s easier than they think. Caufield was a little humbled at the world juniors so I expect he may take Laval as a positive step

If he excels he could be with the Habs quicker than if he stayed at college.

I know that many of the players in the NCAA are 4th and 5th year players (ie, 22 year old men) but in the AHL you have fully developed, often very large men who are trying to do something - anything - to get noticed. If the team is worried he's not strong enough yet (a concern given the fact he'll never be more than 5' 7") then they may well prefer he stays in the Uni program one more season. campabee82
I think he probably made the choice based on a conversation with MB. Which probably went something like this MB - here are your choices kid. 1. Go back to UW with coach Granato and work on A, B and C or 2. go to Laval play for Bouchard and work on A, B and C. He probably chose to go back to UW for 2 reasons 1. He knows Granato and trusts his coaching 2. His brother Brock still plays for UW. So partly a family decision

Yeah I also believe that Brock went undrafted and is already a junior so next season would be his last one with UW. I will check on that and get back to you though

Is that correct and he would have 1 more year of university, similar to Caulfield?

I think people are reading waaaaay too much into this. Did Caufield have a good rookie season? Yes! Is there any indication he's outgrown the university league? no. There's really no need to rush him - especially if our development team doesnt think he's ready. TONS of players play multiple years in the NCAA. Only a very very small amount of them shun the team that drafted them & wait out to become free agents. There's absolutely nothing that makes me think this is even slightly being considered right now.

Me either and just as a side note, during the post draft interview with his parents his mom said that in school he had a choice of taking french or spanish and he chose french stating that one day he was going to play for the Canadiens. While I believe it could have just been one of those this team drafted my son so lets say good things it could also be the truth which makes it kind of interesting
