Marco Scandella

The 29-year-old defenceman carries with him a $4-million cap hit. According to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston, there was no salary retained in the trade, freeing up cap space for Buffalo as they pursue other options of improving their roster.

Scandella has appeared in 31 games for the Sabres this season, scoring three times and adding six assists.

Originally drafted by the Minnesota Wild 55th overall in 2008, Scandella has played 549 NHL-level games in his career, proving to be a willing shot blocker and physical defensive presence.

Almost what the doctor ordered to fix our lineup except he is a UFA and probably leaves at the end of the season. But still a decent stopgap

I like the move for this year - provides some good depth and challenges Mete and Kulak - I doubt that he gets resigned next year and is certainly over priced at $4m

upgrade over Reilly (who was traded in a separate deal) so i guess thats a win.

Too little too late though I fear

That's pretty much how i feel. If we're not going to make the playoffs then why bother with another D-man who possibly draws into the lineup at the expense of a kid like Mete? If he's getting Kulak's minutes then fine, but knowing CJ, i fear the latter. At this point we should be making moves for the long term or at the very least something to address the injuries up front rather then bringing back finished guys like Weise.

Interesting that the Sabres turned right around and flipped the SJ 4th rounder we sent them to Calgary for Frolik, so we know we could have had Frolik if we wanted instead. My personal feeling is that no one we could acquire for such a low cost is going to make a huge difference towards making the playoffs, so it doesn't really matter that much. I think the left side of the D was and still is a bigger issue than the wing, however. Up front, I'd rather they just give more playing time to the younger guys.

As for Scandella, I wouldn't be surprised if Julien lines up

Chiarot-Weber

Scandella-Petry

Mete-Fleury

with Kulak being the odd man out.

It could be a good trade for us. I don't think we gave up a lot and the salary/cap hit really doesn't matter to us much for this season. If Scandella plays badly, we let him walk. If he plays well, then he's a guy who was fighting for ice time in Buffalo and suddenly a player who has found a home with a need for him in his hometown. He could have incentive to stay here. The risk for him is that he tries to go somewhere else and sign a bigger deal but ends up like an Alzner and playing in the minors. Montreal is as good a landing spot as he could hope for with the openings we have on the left side. I don't think we want to sign him long-term, but if he plays decently well, he's a guy you could offer 2 years at a 3.5M AAV, for example. I'm less sold than some on Romanov walking in here next year as a top 4 guy right away and we know we're losing someone in the ED in two summers anyways, so having some depth isn't terrible, as long as we're not locked into bad contracts long term.

I agree with all of this. we don't know if Romanov will even show up! and 2 years at 3.5 would be perfect by then we better have other options

Always liked Scandella, used to work with his cousin in Montreal when he started his career in Minny. We didn't give up much and since Kulak has taken a step back compared to last year, I'm fine with the deal. It probably won't make a huge difference in the playoff race but like Ted said, he could be a good/very good stop-gap in our top 4 for the next couple of years (provided he plays well).

I haven't really been paying attention to him or he hasn't done anything to help get himself noticed?

Really cause he has been pretty bad missing checks, passes, shots and seems like he hasnt yet figured out the speed and hockey sense of our forward group. He always looks like he is chancing or forcing a breakout that's just not there. His play may come around as he gets acclimated to the team more but at this point he looks like a faster Alzner.

Sent to the Blues for picks. 2020-2nd & 2021 - 3rd.

Wow.

So in just over 1 month MB was able to convert a 4th rounder into a 2nd and a 3rd?   Well done Monsieur Bergevin.

Better still, if we're trading away a guy like Scandella  - on this blueline - it feels like MB is admitting its time to be a seller.

EDIT:  TSN reporting its a 2nd and a conditional 4th.   Either way, getting a 2nd for Scandella??? Man thats quite a feat.

the Bouwmeester Effect ...Montreal retaining 1/2 his salary ...only about $500,000 in lay-out at this point in the season

Like this deal and think Domi may be the next to go. Drouin is less likely due to his injury status. But Domi could fill a role somewhere Perhaps Domi a second rounder (that may have just fallen into our laps) and another prospect or pick could fetch some value on defence.

Domi + 2nd + prospect?

who are you targeting because thats a pretty hefty package...

Never thought someone would give us a freaking 2nd rounder for Scandella, GMs are crazy.

Right ... now imagine what Price, Weber, Petry, Tatar, Kovalchuk should all return?  Now imagine most of those picks/prospects panning out and how good we would potentially be 2-3 years from now, you know when Price, Weber, Petry were over the hill.
