Anything Regarding the Virus Thread

If you hear anything re the virus  going around, please post it here, anything hockey related or anything else connected with it.

Here's my contribution:

In Canada, there were 302 reported deaths last season due to the flu according to the Public Health Agency of Canada's final FluWatch of the season. In comparison, there were 388 deaths reported during the 2016-17 season. Sep 26, 2018.

So far, Canada has exactly 1 death connected to this virus. Do the math. IMO, that means that in 2 1/2 months of this year, we had exactly 1 death attributed to the virus.

The whole world is panicking, I'm not.

Ya know, I watched the news tonitev on CTV, and they showed a woman who arrived at the Toronto airport from Italy. She said that she was given a temperature "test" in Italy, before boarding. She was not even asked a question regarding any symptoms at Toronto airport that she may have had. Colossal fail, IMO.

Not saying you should be panicking, but you should be taking this very seriously. Ignore the fact there is only one death reported, there will be more coming. The numbers you are reading are well behind reality because

- many people don't get tested

- many people want to get tested but can't

- some people are asymptomatic or have minimal symptoms but are still spreading the virus around

Overall, we know that the mortality rate is about 2-3% and can be over 10% if you're older. If you follow the number of cases in other countries where there were 100-300 cases, it was in the thousands within a week and the tens of thousands within a couple of weeks. Do the math on that and that means there will be hundreds and probably thousands of deaths in the near future. Canada isn't going to be more immune to this than Italy, Spain, or France, especially if people don't take it seriously.

This.

While panicking is never helpful, vigilance is.  The problem isnt the disease itself, its how shockingly fast it spreads.  There's an excellent explanation of the exponential curve on the Washington Post site: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/   The math shows that if something isnt done, by May, you could see roughly 1/3 americans with the virus.  2% of that number is a staggering - but the mortality rate would likely be MUCH higher than 2%.  As we've seen in countries like Italy, once the resources get taxed, those numbers get very very ugly.

Take for example my small town in BC.  As of right now we have no cases. But imagine if we did & it started spreading. 2, then 10 then a few hundred. No big deal right? But anyone with any sort of pre-existing medical condition (especially lung or heart related) will need respirators.  We have somewhere around 6 i think at our hospital - plenty for any normal situation - but what if 10 people need them? 20? 50?  Now doctors have to decide who is more sick or who is less likely to recover. Neighbouring cities wont lend theirs because they also need them. Its a vicious circle.

So while im 100% not suggesting we should panic, being vigilant is very much something we all need to do.

Per the news conference today:

OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Canada will be shutting the border to non-Canadian citizens, with the exception of their immediate families, permanent residents, diplomats, air crews, and U.S. citizens at this time.

Anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19 will not be able to enter Canada.

He is addressing the nation from self-isolation at Rideau Cottage, updating Canadians on the measures being taken to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.

Trudeau said the virus has been spreading quickly across the world, and Canada is no exception. Therefore, Canada is taking “increasingly aggressive steps” to keep Canadians safe.

Trudeau is also set to announce additional flight restrictions, seeing some international flights rerouted to Montreal, Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver for dedicated enhanced screening.

With schools, community centres and businesses shutting their doors in an effort to help contain the novel coronavirus, many Canadians are spending the day indoors, social distancing or self-isolating.

Throughout the day provincial governments and health authorities have been providing updates on the number of cases in their provinces, with some premiers calling for more action from the federal government, including tightening up the borders.

The prime minister has been self-isolating since Thursday, when his wife Sophie was confirmed to have contracted the virus. On Monday morning, Trudeau spoke with fellow G7 leaders.

Soon, his federal cabinet will be holding a media availability featuring several top cabinet ministers from Parliament Hill, where the details of the latest measures being taken will be discussed.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Health Minister Patty Hajdu, Treasury Board President Jean-Yves Duclos, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair, Transport Minister Marc Garneau, and Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr. Theresa Tam will speak from the National Press Theatre.

Trudeau chaired a federal cabinet meeting from his own self-isolation on Sunday. Before the meeting, he told CTV's Question Period that all options for further measures were on the table and being discussed. He also committed that additional measures to support families and workers would be coming.

Last week, Parliament suspended sitting for five weeks and the Liberals rolled out a $1-billion health and economic response package, as well as an additional $10 billion for businesses who are being impacted by the virus and consumers' changing habits.

As of when Trudeau began speaking, there were 377 cases in Canada, most stemming from travel outside of Canada.

All casinos in Ont. are now shut down.

I, for one, am not altering my life because of it. I will do what I always do up until I find I have any symptoms.

The problem is that you are able to spread it without showing symptoms.  This is partially why Italy is dealing with a catastrophe right now - people didnt know they had it and were spreading it to family, coworkers and friends who in turn spread it to their contacts etc etc.

Once you develop symptoms it may be life threatening for you and your spouse. You need to make the necessary adjustments now to protect yourself and anybody else you may be in contact with. Be safe not sorry. It's not fear mongering but awareness needs to be out there,

This.

The stats say it all. In a few days the US outbreak quadrupled - and even scarier, look at Italy in the first 2 weeks in March.   Unlike most viruses, Covid19 can live for up to 24 hrs on most surfaces and up to 72 hours on smooth surfaces like plastic, glass and metal.

I actually think you're right on this, kinot, but I also wouldn't say it's the whole story.  In my (completely untrained and unqualified) opinion there are two sides to this - the personal and the societal.

On a personal level, I feel like some people are waaaaaaaay overestimating the danger that the virus represents to them.  And I'm not just talking about young folks who shouldn't have problems dealing with it - even people who are in the at-risk groups are, realistically, not in much personal danger from this.  Even if you take a place like Italy, with all the horror stories coming from there, we're still looking at fewer than 28,000 cases.  That sounds like a huge number, but in a nation with over 60 million people that means your chances of being infected right now is like 1/20th of one percent.  China, which largely has their spread under control now, has had about 80,000 cases in a nation of almost 1.5 billion.  Now obviously these numbers can rise and change, but this still doesn't strike me as something your average person needs to stay up at night losing sleep over.

(Stats all come from here)

BUT (and there is a big but!)

The big issue that's coming to the fore isn't the danger to any one person, it's about managing the danger to those few people who do get sick.  28,000 cases isn't a huge number compared to the general population of Italy, but 28,000 people all sick with the same thing at the same time was still enough to completely overwhelm their medical system.  The stories that get shared about Italian doctors having to choose which patients to give ventilators to because there aren't enough to go around are pretty awful, and it's this sort of thing that we're trying to prevent with all the "social distancing" measures.  The whole "flatten the curve" mantra that's getting repeated everywhere is about addressing exactly this - it's not even about the number of people who get sick, it's about trying to limit the number of people who get sick at the same time so that we can provide the necessary medical care to all of them in turn.

So yes, it might seem on the surface like we're taking an awful lot of protective measures for a relatively small number of cases.  And maybe we are.  But if missing our vacations and not watching hockey leads to an extra 10 or 100 or however many people surviving that otherwise might not have, I'd like to think that just about everyone would agree that it's worth it.  So no, you don't need to hoard toilet paper, and no, you don't need to hide in your basement being terrified of germs, but at the same time I'd argue that it's well worth implementing the preventative measures that all of the various public health officials are recommending.  Not necessarily to avoid getting sick ourselves, but rather to reduce the chances of someone getting to the hospital only to find that there's not enough equipment there to help them.

Pretty much. :4224:

In all seriousness, I have a friend in B.C. who said that he can fly to L.A. and return an hour later with 200 U.S. residents and he would be asked to self isolate, while the Americans can walk the streets of Vancouver.

Also, has the border at Roxham Rd. been closed?

That i agree with. If were shutting off borders then why are Americans exempt? My daughter went to Ohio for 2 days last week and is self isolating as recommended. Double standards are insane here and the US.

Uh, HTL, are your travel plans to LV on hold?

I was just watching the news and they showed people returning from abroad, and the returnees were surprised at the lax screening at the airports.

Yeah officially cancelled today.  Every day that went by in the last week saw my odds of going dropping quickly. The strip is pretty much shut down now anyways. Also had a cruise planned this summer for Alaska. Cancelled that 2 weeks ago.:(

That's too bad, just another year that goes by the wayside . Ya, We had planned to go to Michigan the 1st week of June, for an air show (they have the best stuff), then to St. Louis, Dallas, Corpus Christie, Galveston, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and then home. We even have the U.S. bucks, bought 3 years ago. Those plans have been delayed until Sept., maybe longer.

At least we can plan our trip for up north.

I'm too old for this carp.

That's two years in a row of messed up holidays for me now. Had a daughter move back home last year after a messy breakup and cancelled. Tried to make up for it this year by booking two holidays and once again cancelled. I think i'm jinxed.

In 2018 I had hoped that the air show in Mi. would take place, ,,,,nope every 2 years. 2019, comes along and it is postponed. 2020 come along and YES it is on. (face palm) it's chances will not be happening.

We had wanted to attend the reenactment of Gettysburg. I'm pretty sure that won't happen either.

Just curious, but 1st it was Coronavirus, then somehow it morphed into COVID-19. Who changed it and why? Why all caps in COVID? and what happened to the Covids 1 thru 18?

Yeah, COVID-19 is the strain of Coronavirus the world is currently dealing with. I'm guessing there were another 18 before it, but that they didn't present the same problem to humans that number 19 does.
