Larry-Launstein-Jr
I found this story, and it appears that hockey could be starting back up in June with three-week mini-camps. https://novacapsfans.com/2020/04/24/report-nhl-will-open-mini-training-camps-on-june-1/ More, here, but not a total confirmation: https://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/nhl-may-15-report-1.44055361 And yet more: https://puckprose.com/2020/04/24/nhl-allow-teams-extra-ahl-players-season-resumes/ NHL's position so far: https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-season-restart-update/c-316590302
campabee82
I don't know that hockey can start up in June a lot would have to be worked out that is out of the league's control for example if the boarders are closed still all games would have to be in the same country. Not to mention player safety, food and lodging families and about a million other details. I know my work is not planning on opening the office again until at least July so the NHL planning on starting to get players together in May is counter productive IMHO. If the NHL pushes the season no matter what then what is the fallout going to be if things go wrong.

The NHL seems to believe that its possible because the US goverment is desperate to reopen things, saying they have peaked but a lot of scientists seem to disagree (saying its possible but its way premature and totally a 'best case scenario') The Canadian govt seems far less likely to rush things so id be quite surprised if there was any way this takes off in June. That said, if you told me in February that pretty much the entire world would be on lockdown for weeks - months - at a time i would have said "pull the other one" so who knows. Deane62
Give it up. No fans. Quarantined players. One players test positive league shuts down again. Besides, THREE months off with no training camp is no path to "play off hockey" It would be gimmick hockey at best.

Watch how fast the rinks open after Bettman offers Turdeau season's tickets for life to Habs games. Honestly, I can't see what all the fuss is about. Bettman didn't have a problem shutting the league down 3 times including the entire 2004/05 season.

The first story I posted said there would be a three-week training camp before the season starts again. Also, they said that the games would be played in certain cities, and without fans. I would think they would do this in those cities that were not that hard hit. I did carefully say that they could possibly, not that they would, start the season. I don't think June or July hockey would fly anyway. Too much competition from other sports whose seasons are normally in the summer.

And if a player tests positive for Covid during the so called "play offs" Do his team mates, opposing players , refs, trainers, and coaches, get quarantined for 14 days? And if not why not? Larry-Launstein-Jr
You can be rest assured that if one player gets tested positive for the Coronavirus during any part of the NHL"s return, that the league will close immediately. I think the NHL season is over, and the playoffs, too.

Saw a story the other day that said that IF they restarted the season there would be contingencies in case a player tested positive which could include but not limited to expanded rosters and player quarantine/replacement that would allow for the remainder of the season and playoffs to continue without another interruption. The following is a Quote from the ESPN website with a Link Below to the the full story If the NHL resumes, what would happen if a player tested positive? Kaplan: The NHL is working through policy with medical experts they have retained to figure out a contingency plan for this scenario and to make sure it wouldn't derail the entire production. "Everything depends on the facts and the entire set of circumstances," Daly told TSN's Ryan Rishaug last week. "But no, we do not believe that one positive test, even multiple positive tests, would necessarily shut the whole thing down." https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/29101947/the-nhl-coronavirus-pause-where-games-played-latest-draft-more
maas_art
Right now i think the league - like every other business - is just trying to focus on getting back to normal: next season. I think this season is done. I think the league could live with that but I think the #1 priority for them is making sure the 2020-21 season is a go as usual. Hopefully it will be but with new countries peaking at different times its tough to say how long this is going to drag on..

Deane62
TV games with no fans is still far off. January 2021 earliest. More likely October 2021. 20,000 fans stuffed into tiny seats sitting one inch apart. History.

You get 20,000+ people screaming at the top of their lungs for good portions of the game. Pity the fans down below you getting all that spay. As big a fan as i am, there's no way i go to a game until they have a vaccine.

jennifer_rocket
I wish the NHL would just give up on restarting for the year. Cancel the season and start making plans for the draft, free agency, and training camp.
ChiLla
It's official, the Bundesliga (highest pro football/soccer division in Germany) is going to resume play on May 15th. No supporters allowed inside and around the arenas, all teams will have to undergo quarantine starting today plus there's supposedly a "very thorough" hygiene protocol in place. No idea if this will impact decision-making in other sports leagues but there it is. I still think it's a monumentally dumb idea that's mostly driven by monetary concerns but they'll go through with it.

The Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, and so on. Definitely seems like a decision driven by money. I wonder if everything stops again as soon as a player contracts the virus? But then again, they can both look forward to their respective teams continuing to be good performers in 2020-21. It is crappy that they won't get to compete for the Cup this season, but they'll be back competing again.
Manatee-X
Yeah, just stick a fork in it; this season's done. Sucks for the NHL to lose out on the playoff revenue, sure, but when we're talking about a league that's lost however many games to labour disputes in the last few decades.... well, lets just say I'm not going to shed too many tears.
