habsisme
I think this definitely resolves our back up needs, I expect him to play a lot of game this season. Given his cap hit, I expect this means we won't be a player in the free-agent market, but I expected this and think its the right way to proceed given all the UFAs and RFAs next season. apparently we traded a 3rd and 7th in 2020, for Allen, and a 7th in 2021. Basically a 3rd for Allen. Allen has a 4.35 million dollar cap hit and is a UFA at the end of the season.

ChiLla
Hm... pretty high Cap hit and signed for only 1 more season. So we‘ll still need to protect a goalie in the expansion draft, not sure I really like this. Allen is alright as a backup but he‘s very expensive considering his role. The guy played 24 games with decent numbers. I can live with this deal. Solves our backup situation for this year and gives Primeau another year to develop. Don't remember what we were paying Kinkaid but at least this guy won't be eating up cap room in Laval ( i hope). I doubt we protect him down the road. Next year is a whole other can of worms and we may need to hope someone develops enough to be a good backup at a cheap price. This year, we have the cap space for one-year deals (which is why I expect Kovalchuk as well).
Regis22
As a free agent from the Blue Jackets, Kinkaid was signed to a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the Montreal Canadiens on July 1, 2019.[11] After playing six games for the Canadiens, and posting a .875 save percentage, Kinkaid was placed on waivers
HabsAlways
Umm 15m tied up in goalies? This is a dumb move and does nothing to address our real needs

Should be a true backup for us and able to step in and not have us tank the season if Price gets hurt.

Doesn't solve all our problems but we all knew that position had to be dealt with in the off season. One less problem to deal with IMO.

This is a dumb move and does nothing to address our real needs but again, we have the cap space, but we're in a position where can't really go after anyone for long-term or we will have trouble re-signing our own guys. In situations like this, its free money. Its the right move, and we can still maybe take on a bad contract for a pick
habsisme
I'm surprised they managed to get him for 3rd and not a 2nd. This is a good trade and fills a need for the season. At least we know Price will get some rest which is more and more important as time goes on
H_T_L
I look at it as an increase of roughly 3 mill in cap space for a guy that should actually get us some points rather then a guy like Kinkaid who pretty much conceded the points to the opposition. If the guy was able to win half his starts and actually provide some rest for Price, our season stats likely wouldn't have been so poor. How many B2B's did Price have to play because we couldn't risk playing the backup?

pcharnish
I may be thinking a year ahead but I think it will get interesting because the habs might be in a situation to have to protect 2 goalies in the expansion draft I know it's not this off season but next off season meaning price and premeau
H_T_L
The 3rd and 7th picks BTW were picks we acquired from other teams https://www.tsn.ca/montreal-canadiens-acquire-g-jake-allen-from-st-louis-blues-1.1518205

Not much to give up for a goalie of his abilities. He's played well over 50 games in a season so he's the perfect compliment from a load manangement standpoint. For those worried about tieing up $15m on goalies: Allen only has 1 more year on his contract and we have we have 16 regulars already signed for like $65m. There's plenty of space to resign our RFA (Domi, Mete) and I think there's a decent chance we make more trades rather than simply signing UFAs. Our key exemptions are Suzuki, Brook, Primeau, Poehling, Romanov (and obviously Caufield since he doesnt have an ECL even) . We have to protect JK because he played one year before the rest. Likewise Fleury I believe (although they may choose to expose fleury)
maas_art
Apparently we got a 7th in 2022 as well. So it was basically 3rd for Allen (and a 1 year wait for our 7th)
