Toffoli-Crosby-Gallagher Drouin-Suzuki-Anderson Lehkonen-Kotkaniemi-Armia Poehling-Evans-Perry Crosby for Danault, Tatar, Mete, Caufield, another prospect not named Primeau or Guhle, and some picks (probably next year's 1st). I would definitely NOT trade Caufield he is the one thing that this team seriously lacks. He will be a Rocket Richard candidate for years to come. There has never been a Montreal Canadiens player to ever win the RRT since its inception.

In all fairness, we haven't really been a good team during this time period. The last time we had a 40 goal scorer was 1993-94, when Vincent Damphousse scored 40. The last time we had a 50 goal scorer was 1989-90, when Stéphane Richer scored 51. If we can get that kind of production from CC, that would be amazing! If you traded him, and he did that for another team..............

I think you make a deal with top prospects only when you think your team is in a window to win now. I don’t think we’re close to top 4 level yet. Even though Tavares was a free agent involving no prospects- signing him only vaulted the laffs into a bottom top 8 team at best. I’d certainly hang onto Caufield, Guhle, Norlinder, Struble, Harris and Primeau for the next 2 years regardless of how many Sergachev for Drouin potentials are out there even if he is named Sid. I’d rather give up draft choices.

I would not let go of Caufield I think there is a chance he could be a special player.
jennifer_rocket
I absolutely do not care about trading for 33-year old Crosby. I wouldn't even care if it was 2025-26 and free agent Crosby wanted to sign here. We don't need Sidney Crosby to become a competitive team. H_T_L
My question now is how much do we save on the Cap if Byron is sent to the taxi squad? Is it the same as being waived to Laval ( about 1 million) or is it the whole amount of his contract because it's the taxi squad?

Cap friendly puts it at $1.075M - as $2.325 million of Byron is counted with him on the taxi squad. With a few more days of calculations and accruals $1.488M of cap room), we could see a scenario where both Frolik and Perry could be up on the main roster (2 X $750k), with Byron sitting in limbo for a while
H_T_L
Listening to MB today talking about Cap space, he mentions needing room to also pay any bonuses we may be on the hook for,,, otherwise it gets added to next years money. That is the prorated amount per day the Canadiens save on any player making over $1.075 million per season moving to the taxi squad or the AHL. Right now, it makes the most sense for them to move Byron to the taxi squad over say, Corey Perry, whose $750,000 contract would amount to close to $3,000 less in daily savings -- especially while they’re idle until Saturday. While i agree we dont need Crosby, if the principal piece going back was Danault + Prospect + Pick (we'd likely have to include one more salary-based piece like Chiarot or something) i could totally get down for it. I dont see it happening at all - my guess id MB called up pittsburgh they'd want at least JK probably Suzuki and both would be nonstarters for me. If they are ok with Danault being the centre going back, id do it. I think we'd immediately be a better/more competitive team, but i wouldnt gut our roster or give up quality youth to get him. IF - and im not saying im there yet but IF - we believed we were in a position to truly win now and can do so with crosby, id make that deal. As we've seen with our drought of nearly 30 years, a cup now is worth more than a prospect who may or may not help us to one down the road. Dallas traded future 50 goal man Iginla for some past-prime years of Nieuwendyk but i think they'd do it again in a heartbeat because Joe was a huge part of their cup run. That said, it would be a huge risk, especially since our biggest need is LD. Now, if Columbus wanted Caufield so badly they'd part with Weirenski, id definitely be listening. While we have strong prospects down the left side of the D, the right side is largely lacking. We already lost Juulsen, and at present, we're banking a fair bit on Brook or Fleury to be able to play at an NHL level. I don't have high hopes Weber will be able to play the top 4 for very long (I've been worried about how he's started the season and this when he's relatively "fresh"). So in the hypothetical world where Jones was available, I would be doing what I can to acquire him and working out how to ship Weber out afterwards. That sets us up much better in the long run, and in my view, Jones is a top 5 D man in the league. To a lesser degree, acquiring Matt Dumba last off-season would have accomplished a similar goal of lengthening our window to compete. D men like Jones don't come along often and he could be for us what Chara was for Boston for many years. That said, I doubt he's available and Werenski certainly fits our needs better right now, in addition to probably coming in at a more reasonable asking price. I've said it many times before, but Werenski is another favorite of mine and the guy I would have offer-sheeted instead of Aho if I were MB. Both guys would be instant upgrades on our D and make us legitimate contenders this season. If they were available, I would without hesitation throw Caufield into any trade if that's what Clb wanted. Even if he becomes a 40-goal scorer, I'd take the first-pairing D man who can play 20-25 minutes a night for you for the next 5-7 years over a small winger who can score.
