Unless we trade someone (or send someone down) thats probably not happening.

We dont have the salary space to just bring up Frolik, even at the tiny bit we are paying him - unless you mean instead of perry but considering how well he played, i think thats unlikely.   We would have to waive someone (Minors or taxi squad) trade someone (without taking back salary) or put someone on the LTIR.

Cap management is going to be a major hurdle this year considering how close we are to the limit.

I don’t get what you are saying, sorry.
Can players not go from taxi to the team seamlessly? The only thing that changes is cost? Any time Perry or Frolik play, are they not saving cap space by replacing anyone on the team (except maybe Evans)?

Players on the taxi squad are, by cap purposes, in the minors. So its no different than recalling a player from the AHL, they just physically stay with the team because of the covid protocols.

So Perry, Frolic, Fleury, Poehling and Lindgren all have salaries not counting against the cap while they are on the taxi squad.  Our cap space is right around the cost of Frolik or Perry but not both.   We dont have enough cap space to bring up Poehling for example.

If Armia or Byron went on the LTIR then we'd have space but then we would have those guys for up to a month.  So its a little tricky right now..

Was named the NHL 1st star of the week for the week ending January 24th. Joe Pavelski and John Gibson were 2nd and 3rd.

I believe this is the first time since Price in 2015 that we had a 1st star for the week!  I know both price and weber have had 2nd and 3rd but im pretty sure no one has had 1st for the habs  in the last 5 or so years. *

*  as a footnote, John Scott did win player of the week honors in 2016 but considering it was all based around that ridiculous trade/all star game  etc- and the fact he only played 1 game for us, seems like she shouldnt be included in the discussion.

Obviously a great start to the season. That said, I'd like to see what he can do against teams other than Vancouver before heralding him the next great goal-scorer here. He's apparently always had success against Vancouver in his career and thus far he has 8 goals in 5 games against the Canucks and 1 goal in his other 5 games. Extrapolate that over 80 games and that's a 128-goal season against the Nucks but only a 16-goal season if he were playing other teams. Big difference. I'd like to make sure he can bring it in rivalry games and closer competition. Unfortunately, we may not get much of either of those this year, but let's see how he does in more Toronto games.

Not too worried about it here! he is playing on the third line with a developing center and doing a great job. having a player like Tofoli will be great for JK as he has not had a true sniper on his line before and we are not paying him a crazy amount either. it is not like he has never scored on any other teams he just seems to be making a point with Vancover! lol! the fact that all 4 of our lines are pretty deep takes a lot of pressure off of all of our lines it should lead to a lot more offence as the other teams can't key in on one line to shut down. I predict 25-30 goals for him this year baring any injuries. as for us playing in the north division there are some solid teams here too in the end I think it will all even out.

For sure. I think expectations have to be tempered but I also think the "true" Tyler is probably somewhere in the middle.  I think it wouldnt be out of the question to see a 35-40 goal (prorated) season from him.  This "rotating top line" thing we've got going on is going to give pretty near every team troubles. So while im still not convinced Toffoli & JK are the ideal fit (Id love to see Toffoli - Suzuki - Anderson)  I do think that its great we can spread around our talent across... really, all 4 lines tbh.

Our best UFA signing in like... I don’t even know anymore?

For a while for sure.  Kovalev was technically a free agent signing but we did trade for him first so he had a chance to get to know the city and the team, it wasnt a cold-signing UFA.

Of those, i would say Hamrlik and Gionta were probably our best. Cole and Cammalleri get honorable mentions.  I think most of those guys were Gainey-moves.... so,yeah...Its been a while.  No doubt MB's best UFA signing.

Totally forgot about Cole, short stint but definitely great while we had him. Otherwise my vote would probably go to Gionta. You‘re right though, both Hamrlik and Cammalleri are up there but it’s been a while for sure.

ILYA KOVALCHUK!

Oh I forgot Kovalchuk because he was an UFA signing mid-season (after the kings terminated his contract) but you're right, he was probably one of the best UFA signings MB has had & definitely the best in the last 5-6 years or so, before Toffoli.

Yes. He was definitely a good one, but unfortunately,  was a victim of the Russian purge by bergevin.

Oh you mean that purge where he wiped out our entire LHD in one go to be replaced with the mighty Karl Alzner! that poor guy never had a chance here trying to replace Marky Emelin and Beulieu in one go! what a stupid off season that was and to give Radulov the run around too. killed our D and our most dangerous forward at the time too on pride! MB should have been gone right there!
