claremont
This is going to be interesting on cap maneuvering - Pretty certain Weal is getting buried in the minors now. Possibly Frolik or Perry will alternate in the press box on back to back games. Taxi Squad rules on some of our AHL players?

electron58
Big right winger. Former Stanley Cup winner. Experienced. We beat out the Leafs for him. Interesting signing for sure. Low risk low $ cap. Size & experience should help in low scoring games. Scored five goals and four assists in 27 playoff games this past year. Not too shabby. I don't like him I don't know what you mean by bad character, but if this were 10 years ago Bergie would've been licking his chops to get his hands on Perry. Clearly MB saw something in Perry's performance last season that was worth spending the league minimum on him for. It's a more than fair depth signing and I imagine MB is working the phones looking for new homes for one of either Kulak or Weal if not both. Possibly even a new home for Byron. MB has enough picks to offer as sweetener to take on Byron.
maas_art
Hrm. On the one hand: gone are the 40g 80p seasons, but on the other, he's exactly the sort of guy you want on your 4th line. Can probably chip in 20-30 points and I almost guarantee he'll score a couple of game winners when we need clutch scoring. on the flip side, we are now like 1.5m over the cap. but maybe more of a concern, on the active roster we now have these 14 forwards: drouin, anderson, tatar, toffoli, gallagher, byron, danault, armia, weal, lehkonen, kotkaniemi, suzuki, perry, frolik We also have guys like Evans, Poehling, Ylonen and Hillis, all of whom could be NHL ready or close to it. (Evans is the only one who has to worry about waivers). I dont want to be one of those (maple leafs) fans who complains when its hot and then complains when its too cold - we've criticized MB in the past for not 'doing enough' - this year he's definitely adding on & building on his moves, I just worry we're still in trouble on the blueline. I am certain we will waive Weal but if he doesnt get picked up (he wont) then we only bury about a million of his contract. That leaves us over the cap with Frolik & Perry signings. You have to wonder if there's someone on the move (ie byron or a defensman)...

We could easily go 20 men, and then have everyone else on the taxi squad, which doesn't count against the cap. I haven't been able to find any clarification on this. Cause if that's the case, we'll easily be under the cap doing nothing

Cause if that's the case, we'll easily be under the cap doing nothing There's no rule about the full 23 man roster (The leafs had less last year & will again this year). Id be surprised if Julien wanted to go any less than say, 13F 7D and 2G though, so thats 22. I dont see him playing without at least 1 reserve at each position. To get under the cap we could certainly waive another player (Kulak) but its still going to be tight. Trading Byron would be the best solution based on the cap hit but Im not sure if thats in the plans right now (or if anyone would take him). The taxi squad rule for this year may or may not help much. Its essentially sending people to the minors (you can bury as much as you can in the minors, doesnt count against cap etc) but they still are subject to waivers. So its essentially the same as sending a player to the AHL with the two advantages being: they can practice/do drills with the NHL team, and they dont have to travel to get to the big team. Guys like Evans or Weal, or Perry or Frolik or Kulak would all be subject to waivers on the taxi squad the same way they are if sent to he minors). The Taxi squad works great for 1 year vets like Frolik or Perry, but a guy like Evans or Poehling... we'd be better sending them to play in the AHL rather than sitting around in the taxi squad imho. tony5775
I also really like this signing. If we are playing the same team for two or three games at a time. Things are going to get ugly like they do in the playoffs. We will need some guys that can handle the tough stuff. Send Weal any where Laval or another team. No one will miss him. For example, we may want to move on from Byron and Weal, well if there are no takers, you can move them in and out of the taxi squad, if someone takes them off waivers, so be it! Although I really like Byron personally but I have to admit he's at least 1 mil overpaid. Saving 2 million by doing that and making them your two extra forwards is enough to not have to worry about the cap.
maas_art
I wonder if the recent signings (frolik, Perry) are influenced by the quarantine rules. In previous years, MB may have waited to "see what we have" before trading for a player like these guys but now, if you trade for someone and they come from out of country for sure (and possibly other teams too, not sure) they will have to quarantine. you wont have access to those players for 14 days, which is a decent chunk of time. I actually hadnt considered the idea that the team would expose Byron to waivers but you're right, its an option. We only save $1m (roughly) but burying him, but if you taxi-squad Weal, Byron and Kulak you have about $3.5m saved in cap space.

BigTed3
All in all, I like the signing. Low risk. Potentially fills a need for a tougher winger with some offensive ability. MB clearly wants to get bigger and meaner this season, and frankly the division we're in is very winnable. There are no powerhouse teams in our division, and all we have to do is go through those 6 other Canadian teams to reach the semi-finals. My only concern is that Perry is also exactly the type of player CJ probably loves. He feels like the the type of player the Bruins rolled out when Julien was there... like Lucic, Campbell, Thornton, etc. I'm not so worried about some of the younger guys missing out this year, because it'll be a makeshift year anyways and I don't see a young guy cracking the top 9. But I am worried CJ will find a spot for Perry in the top 6 and then we end up sitting or trading away an Armia, Lehkonen, Tatar, or so on for a lesser player. I don’t lose any sleep or worry on losing Armia, Lehkonen or Tatar. I don’t think Perry or Frolik are capable of playing sustained top 6 minutes. I like the way MB has set it up by providing a competitive roster and it’s up to those three players to prove in a makeshift year that they deserve to stay with the team. Armia has to deliver on his promise and play to his enigmatic potential. Lehks is a valuable penalty killer especially with Danault but if that’s his only strength, the roster needs more. Tatar has to continue to prove himself worthy of a long term contract. All 3 IMO can be replaced by a combination of Caufield, and other free agents rather than lesser players

ramcharger440
Well we have a deep team! no real superstars but lots of good players. Price has a real backup to take the load off and if he gets hurt we have a good goalie to keep us in it till he gets back. the D is big and hard to play against and we still have some you guys who may be able to make a sot for themselves there. at center we are in perhaps our best shape with some very good young guns and some solid experience players too. on the wings we also have a good blend of players who can score and check. I don't think I have seen the Hab's this complete with NHL level depth everywhere since the 90's. moving forward there will be hard choices to make and we need to elevate our overall talent level consistantly from here on but all in all we have the makings of a pretty good team.
