Following Thursday night’s 5-3 loss against the Minnesota Wild that saw Matt Roy and Sean Walker injured, the Los Angeles Kings will be without two of their top right-handed defencemen. Walker suffered an upper-body injury after taking a Mathew Dumba slap-shot to the face in the third period. He immediately left the ice and went down the locker room tunnel. He is expected to be out for two to four weeks. Roy suffered an upper-body injury following a hit committed by Wild forward Kevin Fiala, which led to a major penalty. He is expected to be week-to-week.  By: Davis Green | February 3, 2021

Philadelphia Flyers center, Morgan Frost will have shoulder surgery and could miss the rest of the season. The 21-year-old will head to the injury list after only playing in two games this year. On January 19th, Frost sustained his injury after a hit by Buffalo Sabres defenseman, Jake McCabe. At the time, the Flyers ruled Frost out indefinitely.                                By: Jonathan Lidskin | February 3, 2021

The Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Colorado Avalanche, and New Jersey Devils have added in a total of 11 new players to the NHL COVID Protocol List on Wednesday. All of Minnesota’s games have been postponed at least until February 9.After having to postpone all of the Buffalo Sabres games until at least February 8th, the NHL is now facing a COVID breakdown. Minnesota has added five players, Nick Bjugstad, Nick Bonino, Joel Eriksson Ek, Marcus Johansson, and Jared Spurgeon, to the Protocol List. Buffalo has added Tobias Rieder and Brandon Montour only one day after adding Taylor Hall and Rasmus Ristolainen. Colorado added Tyson Jost, being their first player on the list since Erik Johnson at the start of the season. And New Jersey now has 17 players on the list.

Wayne Simmonds of the Toronto Maple Leafs, could be out for an extended period of time due to injury. This is devastating for a player, who was having something of a renaissance after several disappointing seasons. He could be out as long as six weeks, which would eliminate his availability for much of the remaining regular season.

I for one, will not miss him.

CONFUSING CALL
After Trocheck scored late in the second period, officials overruled an offside challenge by Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella after looking at the replay. The Blue Jackets were assessed a penalty because of the failed challenge. At the break, officials decided that the play was offside, after all. They waved off the last 45 seconds of the power play but didn't take the Carolina goal off the board.

Here’s the NHL’s official explanation:

Columbus requested a coach’s challenge for off-side prior to a goal at 18:45 of the second period.

During the review, a miscommunication occurred between the Video Replay Booth in Columbus, the Linesmen and the Situation Room and play resumed before all replays could be reviewed to confirm the off-side. The challenge by Columbus should have resulted in the Carolina goal being disallowed. Subsequently, Columbus was assessed a delay of game penalty. After confirmation in the intermission that the play was off-side, the remaining 0:45 of the delay of game penalty issued was rescinded to begin the third period.

Can you believe that this is still happening in this age of technology? John Tortorella had every right to blow a gasket, but incredibly, he maintained his composure. Unbelievable!
