BigTed3 Posted February 23, 2021 Report Share Posted February 23, 2021 It's clear that our special teams are special for the wrong reasons this year, and it seems like the PP has been subpar for years now. Is it Muller? Is it the personnel? We don't have a Markov, Wisniewski, Subban, Souray, or MAB back at the point any more and neither Weber nor Petry has been overly effective as a quarterback. I like to look at some of the advanced stats and in particular, one of the stats I love for special teams is looking at the number of scoring chances generated per ice time while a player is on the ice for the PP and conversely, the number of scoring chances against per ice time for the PK. Here's what the data shows us thus far... - On the PP, our best forwards have been in order Perry, Drouin, Toffoli, Tatar, and Kotkaniemi then Suzuki and Gallagher not far behind. Anderson has been the worst by far. On D, Romanov has been most effective, then Petry, then Weber, although the three are not separated by that much. - On the PK, our best forward by a longshot is Toffoli, then Suzuki, Evans, and Lehkonen. Danault, Byron, and Armia round out the group as being less successful in this role. On D, Kulak is tops but with a very limited ice time, then in order it's Chiarot, Petry, Weber, Edmundson, and Romanov. A few takeaways from this for me: - A couple of guys like Perry and Drouin, who I would not have expected to be as good, are actually our top PP players. Conversely, Suzuki and Anderson aren't as good and Gallagher seems to be perennially ineffective here. - Romanov has also been more effective than thought and just as good if not better than Petry and Weber. - On the PK, Toffoli really wows with how good his numbers are compared to everyone else. Chiarot is not as bad as I thought he might be, but veterans like Danault, Byron, Armia, and Weber disappoint here again. It makes you wonder what value Danault provides to the team if he isn't scoring in the least and also isn't providing any value on the PK. A couple of things I'd like to see... 1. Use Suzuki on the point on the 1st PP wave. He isn't having terrific success down low but he has great vision, so maybe put him in the Markov role. I don't particularly love Drouin in that spot because even though he's good at puck control and walking the line, he's not as good a puck distributor. I'd play Suzuki-Weber on wave 1 and Petry-Romanov on wave 2. 2. Up front on wave 1, I'd throw my best players together. Perry for net presence in front of Weber's shot. Toffoli as the slot/half-wall player with the quick shot. And Kotkaniemi as my top center. On wave 2, I'd have Tatar-Drouin-Anderson as my forwards to go with Petry-Romanov. 3. On the PK, I'd like to give a few players a try there that we haven't seen. If we want to run 3 forward pairings there, I'd start by putting Gallagher out there with Suzuki. Suzuki has played well there and maybe letting Gallagher get into the game and into a role where he feels like he's working and contributing will help. That duo could also generate some offence on the PK and if Gallagher's not on the PP any more, it'll give him ice time. Second, I'd try Kotkaniemi and Lehkonen. Put the Finns together. Lehkonen's a smart positional player. Kotkaniemi's got long reach and he needs to become a bigger part of the line-up. Lastly, Evans and Toffoli. Two of our better PK guys to date, so no need to swap that out. No role for Danault, Byron, or Armia here for now, but a chance for them to practice and earn a spot back at a later date. In my opinion Kotkaniemi has looked lost on the PP makes bad passes any time he's hurried at all. Loses most puck battles. Suzuki doesn't have the shot to be on the point. He wouldn't be much threat at all. Go back to what the season started with Weber and Petry on the first unit together. Suzuki, Gallagher than Perry,Armia or Anderson someone with size. 26NCounting Posted February 23, 2021 Report Share Posted February 23, 2021 Best way to fix the PP IMO is to stop doing this stupid drop pass entry into the offensive zone, this negates one of our biggest advantages by eliminating team speed. By doing the drop pass our forwards are standing still waiting at the blue line for the D to either carry the puck in or dump it in. Also, our current PP is pass the puck to the D and let them shoot OMG this is soo obvious it's pathetic. Teams cover the D and our coaching staff has no clue how to change things up. Would love to Gally and Perry on one PP and see them clog up the front of the net, would potentially drive the opponents nuts. Once again the PK is a mess largely in part because our C's can't win a face off and fail to cover their assigned players. The C have been caught out of position too often, this is a result of poor coaching and poor playing mainly by PD.
