Eric Staal

It's a decent deal. Staal at 1.6M (with the 50% retained) is not bad. Trading a 3rd and a 5th is not bad. The question is what all this means... we have a lot of forwards, and Staal is almost certainly here to play a bottom 6 center role. So the easy move is to send Evans back down to the AHL. He could use it. However, MB also sets himself up now for the possibility of trading Danault. If Danault doesn't want to sign a reasonable contract, out he goes. MB has Staal for this year and Poehling maybe coming next year to be able to replace Danault if he has to. Not ideal, but doable. So maybe this is also a bargaining chip against Danault in addition to an add to the roster.

Cap hit of 1.6 minus the hit from the guy they send down, so somewhere under a 1 mill add. My only issue as i mentioned in the rumour thread is seeing him bump down one of the kids to fourth line. I'd be pissed if that happens. The only thing we gave up of consequence was the 3rd rounder and even that is pretty much a wash. The 5th is merely a shot in the dark.

Earliest we'd see him in the lineup would be Sat April 3rd vs the Sens. At least Perry has somebody he'll be able to keep up with. Anybody know what his faceoff stats are?

Never mind,,,, found it. He's at 51% which is just slightly better then Evans at just under 49%

This.

In his tenure MB hasnt actually made many "bad" trades but a lot, in hindsight, were "meh" because he didnt follow them up.   Adding Staal to this roster makes us better yes, but only marginally.   Replace Evans with Staal & maybe we have a couple more wins right now. But its nowhere enough  & not in the place we really need help (PMLHD) not to mention the fact that we still need to rejig our defensive pairings to get the most out of some of our aging assets.

So, I have no problem with the trade. I like it actually.  But our forwards were really not an issue to begin with.   Lets see what he does next. If the answer is nothing, then i think its a bad (or at least a "nothing") move.

Yes. I read that too. He had to wave it to go to the Habs. Maybe he sees potential? Or he just wanted to get out of Dodge.

Simply just a waste of picks. This guy has no added value.

I would sooner be saving these picks to sweeten a pot, like a 1st, 3rd and 5th, plus a player for a need, like a top pairing deeman.

Did Bergevin think no quality defenseman would be available in the draft?  Its seems we need them worse than a 36 year old center.
