H_T_L
Another beauty today. How does this League have any credibility at all? It's bad enough that their refs are corrupt so why not hire corrupt people to dish out discipline. How many head shots have been delivered to Hab players this year? How many have received suspensions? Poor McDavid is going to have to go to the bank and pick up some more silver for the vending machines. Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid fined $5,000 for elbowing Montreal Canadiens Jesperi Kotkaniemi - TSN.ca

kinot-2
Isn't there something in the CBA that there's a limit to what players can be fined or suspended?

Yes, which is all the more reason why this should have been games, not money. Its a ridiculous sum, which shows that it should have been measured in games. How much do you want to bet if Romanov or Edmundson throw that exact same hit on McDavid next time we play they get fined actual games?

It should be games only. Players would then think twice about doing dumb things.

It's not only the bias we see between stars and the rest of the players, it's also the bias directed at certain teams like us. I believe that's the fourth head shot against us this year that's pretty much been ignored by player safety.
kinot-2
The $5,000 was the maximum allowable under the CBA for McDavid.

jennifer_rocket
Question: How are positions in NHL player safety appointed? I assume the CBA stipulates the NHLPA has a major say?

If they ever put an outside guy that never played hockey, and couldn't be influenced by the league, into that position, there would be a lot of unhappy people. As it stands, it will always be a farce. It's not about protecting the players. It's about the perceived NHL image, that they are doing something about it, when they're not. I kind of assume the players don't even really care about protecting the players. It always feels like it leans more towards protecting pocketbooks while punishing a few "bad apples" consistently. Like, if Tom Wilson has to take a ton of suspensions to create the image of 'NHL/NHLPA/NHL player safety' care so McDavid doesn't have to miss any games, so be it. ChiLla
5 grand? Put into proper context, that's not even a slap on the wrist for what technically could be considered assault. If it has to be a fine, adding a zero or maybe even two zeros to that figure would send a clearer message and maybe give players pause.

And you know that McDavid will not be held accountable, because Kassian will over protect him. So, basically, McDavid got off Scott free

But because it is one of the so called stars of the game today it goes with a pocket change penalty! Incredible!!!!

Maybe they should directly tie it to a percentage of the player‘s salary to keep it fair. I dunno, but a 5k fine is just a farce and serves no purpose IMO. H_T_L
Vegas forward Stephenson gets three games for elbowing Kings defenceman Bjornfot. I'm guessing he doesn't meet the NHL standards of superstar. Poor guy. Just saw the video and it looks like a lot lighter hit then what McDavid delivered. The difference was that he drew blood. He got 5 and a game as opposed to McDavid's whopping 2 minutes
