Is MB done?

I dont expect any trades from MB on the last day. I wouldnt be surprised to see him add someone in the next day or two but i dont think he'll get swept up in the madness. I could see him putting a "take it or leave it" deal or two out there & lucking out like he did with Vanek.

The big question for me is: does he see our defense as a weakness? Because I sure do & I dont see how we're going anywhere in the playoffs unless that changes.

It's hard to say. I suspect MB might see it as a post-season strength, unfortunately. He'll look at Chiarot returning to the lineup as a good thing. He'll expect them to perform better in the post-season when you can get away with more rough stuff.

Agree. I think the coaches & MB are convinced that this defense is built for the playoffs, which is why they havent done sensible things like switched Weber & Petry's ice time.

However, I dont think thats going to be the case because as we've seen over and over, guys are exploiting Weber/Chairot and Edmundson's foot speed and i dont think them throwing a few more punches/crosschecks is going to change that much.  I hope im wrong.

Leafs make a move and pick up an injured guy who's going to be out for 6 weeks.

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Riley Nash from Columbus Blue Jackets - TSN.ca

There's a reason for Dubas' madness.

In addition to being a potential depth add to the Maple Leafs’ bottom-six, the 31-year-old Riley Nash, who is currently sidelined four to six weeks with a knee sprain, has been placed on the team’s long-term injured reserve, freeing up cap space for further possible moves ahead of the April 12 trade deadline.

Nash is making $2.75 million this season and is in the final year of a three-year, $8.25-million contract.

The very sad thing is,  that Montreal originally had Julian Brisboise. He is head and shoulders,  smarter than any other GM in the league. 100 times better than Bergevin. Can you just imagine,  where the Habs would be today, if we had Julian? Makes me so sad.😥

How many think we should actually make a trade of prospects or draft choices for any rental addition for this under achieving bunch?

I would dump some existing roster pieces but that's as far as I would go. I am of the view to take our chances as is and unload some pieces in the offseason.

I have zero interest in taking on a rental. I've said this before, but if you want to be a real contender this year the Habs need

1. An elite center

2. A top-pairing puck-moving LHD.

3. Help at RHD to be able to limit Weber and Petry's minutes.

The chances of finding those things without giving away our entire prospect pool is virtually nil. I don't see much point in reaching out to add an aging defenceman like Alex Edler or a 4th line forward like Nick Paul. Pass. This team doesn't need more of the same, it needs upgrades at the top end of the line-up. It is entirely possible that one of Kotkaniemi or Suzuki becomes an elite center over time and that help will come for the D corps in 2-3 years as our prospects mature, and frankly, the odds of this happening internally are better if we're patient regarding our draft choices than they are trying to trade for the discards of non-playoff teams.

The other option is making a hockey trade for a player with term. If you add a 25 year-old with 3-4 years on their current deal, then maybe that makes sense as you build forward. But we also need to keep in mind that it's an ED year, so every player you add means you risk subtracting a better-quality guy to Seattle this summer. So that has to be factored in too. Doesn't make a lot of sense to re-sign Danault and Tatar and trade for another top 6 winger and then find yourself losing Drouin or Toffoli in the ED for nothing.

If I were GM, I would 100% be asking around to see what people would be willing to pay for Tatar, Armia, Lehkonen, Weber, Staal, Perry, Price, Chiarot, Edmundson, Drouin, and Danault. It doesn't mean I would trade any of them, but I think you need to know what your market is. If someone is offering me a 1st rounder and a prospect for Tatar, I'm trading him. Now you can argue that we're likely to make the playoffs and could use him as an own-rental, but our odds of winning a Cup right now are slim and Tatar might well just walk away after the season is over anyways. So are you keeping Tatar for a chance to go one more round in the playoffs or are you taking the return to help build for a Cup winner in a few years? If someone offers a 1st for Lehkonen, bye bye. If someone offers me a young D man like Jake Bean or Connor Timmins for Drouin, bye bye. I'm looking to make this team better during a window in which we're legitimate contenders, not looking to lose a 1st round playoff series 4-2 instead of 4-1.

Sami Vatanen also on waivers. 2M AAV, impending UFA. Although would have made more sense for Bergevin to flip him to NJ for Mete and a 7th and ask NJ to hold on to half the salary if he were interested in him, so guessing he's not a target. Would also suggest there was no trade market for either Mete or Vatanen, which would in turn suggest the price to pay for a rental defenceman might not be all that high. Kulikov in NJ still a guy I would have my eye on as a rental. Vince Dunn would remain my 1 target of those rumored to be available though.

And ahead of anything happening, here's a list of players I hope MB doesn't touch with a ten foot pole:

- Erik Gudbranson

- Jamie Oleksiak

- Mattias Ekholm (a good player but not worth what Nashville will be asking for him I'm guessing)

- Alex Edler

- Alex Goligoski

- Marc Staal

- Nikita Zadorov

Guys I would be okay with him looking into for the right price:

- Dmitry Kulikov

- Ryan Murray

- Vince Dunn

Mete doesn't fit in their long term plans and I bet they tried to trade him but caught no interest - $735K of cap relief if claimed. I am totally supportive of Dunn. An interesting target per Friedman on Sat. night was Hayden Fleury from Carolina - impressive junior credentials and size - former #1 - 7th pick overall and soon to be 25 (under contract for another year at $1.3M so they must have seen something in him). He has not developed into anything - I have not seen enough of him to know if he's just slow, or whether Bouchard could develop him in Laval
