2021 NHL Draft

Recommended Posts

- Disappointed by the Mailloux selection

- Liking the possible upside of Kidney and Kapanen, and top 6-9 centers are a need for the organization going forward

- Kostenko and Trudeau both D men with skating issues and I've said this before, but I really don't like when kids have trouble skating. It's one of the hardest things for guys to improve enough upon to keep up with the NHL. You can get by in junior without speed but in the NHL, other teams will take advantage of you and it's hard to have the rest of your package overcome poor skating.

Was it a smart move by an organization that supposedly prides itself on it's players being the best on and off the ice??? Not by a long shot. Does the kid deserve a chance to atone for it all? Everybody deserves that chance,,,, i just wish it was somebody else giving him the opportunity.

He absolutely does but the process would have worked better if he didnt get drafted (or at least not in the first round) which would have meant he would actually have faced some punishment.

Molson,  is going to have to step in, and do some damage control.  I don't see how bergebin does NOT get fired! Tell me this isn't happening.  I can't even go online,  without seeing the hate directed at the Habs. And you know, as Hab fans, we'll endure critical comments.  Gonna be a sad summer.  And we waited 3-1/2 hours for this? I don't even want to watch the rest of the draft.  ☹

I can certainly understand the hate being directed at the Habs right now. At the same time there are a few teams who's fans really should be looking at their own team history before throwing judgement. We all know how the Leafs and Hawks would like to forget their sickening past, and just sweep it under the rug. This one pales in comparison, and i'm not in any way trying to downplay it.

Judging by the reaction on various forums it would appear that the Montreal Canadiens drafted Charles Manson last night.

Yeah. As i've mentioned above,,, some of those fans should be checking their own team's history. Leaf fans should be the last ones to be casting stones.

This kid made a mistake as do a lot of kids posting content on social media. It by no way excuses it, but at  the same time, somebody was going to give him a second chance. I just wish it wasn't my team. We could have done without the controversy.

I don’t like the pick either, but it is what it is and I‘m not inclined to knee-jerk reactions (trying not to at least, it’s a work in progress thing I guess). Be that as it may, there are plenty of decisions in my life I‘m not proud of, so I‘m not going to cast the first stone. Hopefully the kid will be able to turn the page and grow from this. Let’s see how it turns out.

Won't disagree for sure. As far as punishment goes,,, i don't think being drafted very late in the 1st, or in later rounds really has a bearing on that. He's going to have to live with this for a very long time and every action he takes from now on will be heavily scrutinized. I doubt the Montreal media will just give this kid a pass whenever he steps out of line going forward.

Yup. I don't understand why MB would have placed the organization in this position in the first place but it's done now. The pressure of playing in Montreal (if he ever does) is already a tough obstacle to overcome. This added pressure pretty much makes it improbable for him. Time will tell.

Absolutely, it’s a really weird move given the heavy emphasis he‘s placed on the importance of character, intangibles, and whatnot. I‘d rather not have to deal with this at all and it‘s coming from way out of left field but here we are. I‘m kind of wondering if Molson was okay with the pick beforehand and nodded it off. We‘ll find out soon enough I suppose.

I think Bergevin had the green light to pick whoever he wanted - Molson has never struck me as a hands on owner. I too wish we could have picked someone else but the org has made its choice to help the kid.
If he can turn his life around - Mailloux and Guhle could be a a formidable pairing for years to come but the end doesn’t justify the means - this kid will wear a shadow for a long time.
Btw Bergevin prides himself on character and behavior of players when they represent the ‘CH’ - This happened prior to Logan joining the team so while it’s a questionable decision on immediate forgiveness, it’s unfair to call him hypocritical re; Kassian, Chucky, etc.

Very true, I'm still curious though... is this is all MB or did he check with his "boss" first? The move does come with some repercussions PR-wise, which is usually something Molson would have some interest in.

Also, fair point regarding Bergevin's stance on character. Picking the kid is one thing, but he's going to be on a very short leash.

Of our late round picks 5-7, the only one I am intrigued by is the young C - Joshua Roy from the Q, who has some size and goal production for his youth. The rest of the picks imo were cannon fodder

Roy is intriguing. Some of the others may have some upside. Overall, the draft is more of a black box this year. Sobolev, for example, didn't even play this past season. So it's even harder than usual to know how these kids will pan out.

He can still be made to do community service various outreach programs there are a lot of ways this can get resolved. if he does pan out and does the work to atone for what he did then it will be a good pick. I will wait to judge as I don't have all the info yet.

He paid the fine, I am the father of a 19 y.o.daughter and I do not know why this is being made such a big deal. Was he an A** for taping and sharing the video with his friends? Absolutely he was, but his actual crime was showing the video without her permission. Not the taping of the act or the fact that the video was sex related. Just sharing the video with his friends. That is equivalent to opening someone else's mail. I know it sounds insensitive and I am not trying to be, IF it was my daughter on the video I would be outraged as well but I wouldn't be able to do anything more than this girls parents did. Also society wouldn't care if it was my daughter and a young man who was not about to be drafted to the NHL. Unfortunately there is no laws preventing the taping of a sexual act as long as one party knows that they are being taped. He obviously knew and while it is disrespectful to tape her it was not an illegal sexual act. He paid his fine and has enrolled in counseling, hopefully the young lady is able to put the whole thing behind her as well. I equated this to how the Kardashians became famous in an earlier post, I stand by that. Kim Kardashian taped and released on the internet herself having sex with Ray J. This got her fame and fortune, I am thankful this young man had more decency than what Kim did. Even President Clinton was caught in a sexual act in public (supposedly Ms. Lewinsky was under a podium) he didn't even lose his status as president for that transgressions but this young man should lose his future?! Patrick Kane, Austin Matthews, Bobby Hull, and numerous other players throughout history even recent history guys like Hyman and Evander Kane and Austin Watson committed far greater crimes but were allowed to continue to play without repercussions. AM was going to at the very least assault that female security guard IF he had gotten through the locked car door, more likely though he and his two friends were going to gang ***** her. Yet he is allowed to continue to play hockey and faced no repercussions either. This kid is being persecuted for being young and dumb, something you would have to believe that many if not all of us have done ourselves. People are standing up for her rights and that is good on them but let's not forget that this young man also has rights that someone needs to protect as well. The punishment should always fit the crime, an invasion of privacy and defliamtion are worth a fine and maybe a banishment from the country but to want to run the kid out of the draft and ruin his future is equivalent to sentencing a death penalty to a shoplifter. Let's calm down a bit and look at this logically. The kid pled guilt and paid his fine (admission step 1), he apologized (it may have been only 3 lines but no one wants to take into account that perhaps this kid feels so guilty he doesn't know what to actually say. Nothing will make her feel better or the embarrassment go away), he is taking counseling something he did voluntarily so he is trying to become a better person. I get he tried to recuse himself from the draft but he is not allowed to do that. Many other teams were said to be open to taking the kid in the 2nd round and he was clearly a target MB wanted and may have missed out on if he hadn't taken him. Taking him in the first round does not make this unfortunate situation any worse that if he was to go in the 1st round next year or even in a later round this season or next season.

sorry I didn't mean to quote anyone and removed it from the beginning
