Teammates are cheering when someone finally gets one by him in practice. He is smashing sticks when scored on in practice. Price may just save our asses in this series. Danault's line will stifle Matthews' Evan's line will stifle Tavares' Suzuki/Toffoli will light them up twice, Weber will get a PP goal and Staal will have a Renaissance game with the game winning (2nd) goal. You can tell how a player is feeling and what his mindset is going into a big game by the way they practice. If a player is digging in hard and making unreal plays and not just floating you know he wants to make a difference in the next game. If Price was just treating these practices as if they mean nothing and didn't care about letting in the odd goal here or there then I would be hoping they started Allen instead of the guy mailing it in. Maybe in your beer league Practice means nothing cause your not playing for anything important where as in the NHL Practice makes perfect, so to speak. Why do you think they hold a Practice almost every off day they can? If it meant nothing then teams wouldn't spend the money on practice facilities and weight rooms and crap! I am in no way agreeing with the decisions but - i would bet that a decent number of coaches in the NHL would make 2 of those 3 moves. Romanov and CC out for game one so that they can "watch" a game or two before getting thrown in. A LOT of coaches do this with their young players - and there is a method to the madness: you go through tapes with them on what they need to work on, they watch the games to see how those players handled it & then you put them in. Again, im not saying its ideal or its what I would do but its not a DD or MB only thing. Its something that happens quite often - and especially if there's something specific they need to work on, it can be effective to step back. The one im scratching my head over is JK. He was one of our best forwards in the bubble last year. He's had a down season but he's scored more than Staal (and brings a ton more than Staal in other areas of the game). My guess is they want to see if a rested staal, who has had time to practice & learn the system will be better. So the decision was probably more about getting staal into a game or 2 than keeping someone out - and when they looked down the roster they said: Suzuki, best offensive centre, gotta keep him in. Danault, best defensive centre, got to keep him in. So it would have been between JK and Evans. And with the way that Byron-Evans-Lehks shut down the big guns in Edmonton, DD probably thinks you need to keep them together for support (perhaps against Tavares' line). So i guess JK is the odd man out. I dont like it, but im pretty sure thats the thinking. Lets hope that Staal has a monster game & actually helps us but if he doesnt (and he most likely wont) then you get JK back in the lineup so maybe thats better. I suspected they might sit KK and CC (which i wouldn't have done) but the one that blows my mind is Romanov. They talk about playing a physical game and you send out Merrill? I just can't get passed that. I understand Romavov is a young player but he's played in a lot of high pressure games in his short hockey life and has handled it well from what i've seen of him. That might have washed in a normal year when you were facing an opponent you weren't familiar with, but we've played these guys 10 times this year with most of those in the last month of the season. You can see the Leafs are expecting to be more physical with their roster choices and yet we choose to be softer by sitting out one of our best hitters. Interestingly, Eric Staal, despite having nearly 1300 regular season games, has only played in 62 playoff games. 25 the year they won, 18 one other time and then 4 other 1st round exits. He has good overall P/O stats (51pts) but obviously those are inflated by the earlier years. I still think its the wrong decision to dress him, but you probably couldnt find any better motivation for a player to break out of his slump - if he still has anything in the tank that is. There is a slim chance he's not as bad as he's looked because a lot of the issues I saw seemed to be system and positioning related. He looked lost. Maybe with a bunch of solid practices under his belt now, he'll be more comfortable and confident in his role (although I kind of doubt it). I think we'll win tonight. I could see him and Perry getting a goal although I think its going to be Suzuki's line, exploiting one of T/O's lower lines that will get us the victory. I think you'll see Danault vs Marner, Evans vs Tavares leaving the Suzuki and Staal lines to match up against the Nash & Spezza lines.
