Not surprising!

I wonder if they will bring in any new assistants...

Depends if Alex burrows becomes Head Coach of the farm team ( read this on instagram - Take it for whatever )

A one year deal to see how he does for a full season would have been the smart thing to do. Then again the smart thing to do would have been to give Bouchard the job in the first place.

I am not so sure about the latter comment - Joel Bouchard had 2 years of AHL coaching with only the last year his star was rising from a development perspective, and 4 years of QMJHL success. Ducharme 7 years coaching in the QMJHL, silver medal and gold medal coaching team Canada Juniors and 3 years being groomed as the successor in waiting with Montreal as an assistant coach. His credentials far exceed Bouchard's accomplishments. Time will tell but the players seem to respect him but I hope he makes better personnel decisions especially on defense with Kulak and Romanov vs. useless Merrill and a treadmill in Gustafsson exhibited in the playoffs.

An interesting idea.  Is a HC in the minors more appealing than AC in the NHL?  I guess it depends on the coach.

I LOVED Bouchard's candor and frankness.  I think he was the ideal development coach. But i agree, we really don't know what he would be like at the NHL level.  Coaching young players & developing them does not necessarily mean you can make the jump to a results-oriented coach.  Bouchard was the first to admit this saying his job was to develop players, wins were secondary - at the NHL level its the opposite.   So we shall see.  I dont mind

How many years we sign a coach for is not relevant to our Cap restraints so that's a non starter. My only concern is does he have full control over the lineup or is he just MB's lap dog.

Agree. I dont really care how much of Molson's money is going to coaches.

I would assume he and MB have some of the same philosophies.  That said, MB has shown he can learn from things so maybe DD teaches him a thing or two.  Ultimately they both want to win, there's no question about that.

I am very pleased with this signing. At 1.7 million for three years, seem like a steal. Claude I am pretty sure signed at 5 million for 5 years. First time in many years that the coaches make sense to me. If Bouchard does not want to be here, we’ll I wish him well elsewhere.

The highlighted part is the reason I would have limited the contract to one year, as far as coaching team Canada goes a chimpanzee could likely pick up a medal there. But like you say time will tell.

I'm not so sure about that, it's not like you have NHL teams offering you a coaching job every day.

Lol.  He just took his team - a heavy underdog - all the way to the SCF...  Yeah, he'd be getting coaching offers from other teams.

I don't understand the concern about a coach being given term. So what?? If he doesn't do the job he gets fired,,, even if it's halfway through his first year. Rich teams like the Habs and Leafs can afford that perk, so why not exploit it? It has zero impact on our Cap numbers so i say knock yourself out. Give the guy 10 years if it's what it takes.

Im not sure if his philosophy has changed, or if Julien didnt let him have as much input but ive been pleasantly surprised with his moves as a coach (specifically he handles defense & the PK).

Was interested to see if the rumours were true that he was taking the HC position in Laval but i still think an assistant at the NHL would be considered 'higher up' than HC in the minors so, not surprising.

  • H_T_L changed the title to Habs Coaching Staff, 2021-22

Letowski, 44, has been the head coach of the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires since 2018, and previously worked with the Sarnia Sting.

He's also represented Canada at three world junior championships as an assistant coach, helping the team take home the bronze medal in 2014 and gold in 2018.
