The 19-year-old will join the Leafs immediately after the approval of his Canadian work permit. The Leafs selected Ovchinnikov in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft. The Red Wings just claimed Smith off waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning a few weeks ago. Due to this, Tampa Bay has first priority to claim him and if they do, they will also have the option to send him to the American Hockey League (AHL) without having to place him back on waivers. The one-way deal will kick in following the 2021-22 season and run through the 2023-24 season, carrying an average annual value of $800,000.
