2021-22 Rumours

Suter gets bought out.

Habs fans talk about reuniting Suter-Weber.

Weber's career could be over.

***

Halak's agent announces Boston won't re-sign him and he'll seek work elsewhere.

Habs fans talk about a Price-Halak tandem if Allen gets selected.

Allen protected, Price exposed.

Any more reunion talk out there? Are we bringing Galchenyuk back to go with Gallagher? Getzlaf to go with Perry? Domi to go with Drouin (either here or in Seattle)? The Suzuki brothers?

Danault not expected to be back . He is looking for 5 - 6 years at $5.5 million . He rejected 6 yr $30 million last year

Yeah ,,,, if he's holding out because of half a million more/year,,, then he obviously doesn't want to be here. If Price ends up in Seattle somehow, then possibly MB ups his offer,, but i wouldn't count on it.

Rumor Montreal snd edmonton discussing a deal involving jake Allen . The return would be a pick and a prospect

This is sort of odd. I mean why not just expose him then?  I understand you'd get value for him but is losing byron or kulak for nothing + trading allen for a pick/prospect better than just losing allen?

weird that he would leave over that small of a difference.   I think he's going to have trouble getting that contract as UFA but who knows. I know he's incredibly valued as a defensive centre but on any good team he's your 3rd line centre. Who is paying that sort of money for their 3rd line?

It's odd because we would have then needed to sign another goalie to expose in the draft.

Could be his last decent contract. .5million x 6 = 3 million dollars a lot to leave on the table especially if it's at a lower tax rate.

Florida Panthers, Dallas, Nashville Colorado, all have low tax rates vs Quebec - there’s a few teams that might pay that difference for a defensive 3rd line Centre

According to Pierre LeBrun, #Habs are likely to let Phil Danault walk into free agency, without closing the door for him to come back after having heard from other teams.

I think he easily makes up that half mill/year and more in endorsements from the Montreal/Quebec area being pretty much the only French player in the market without having to pick from other teams. He has to take that into consideration IMO.

The door won't be open for long knowing MB. He's just as likely to sign a replacement within days.

Let him walk. The rumors are that he thinks he's worth 5.5-6.5M a season. Maybe those rumors aren't true, but Danault himself has admitted to turning down the 6 years x 5M offer from the Habs and he supposedly had that offer at the start of the year and at the end of it again and preferred to see what his value was on the open market. Danault thinks he's the second coming of Patrice Bergeron, and maybe the French media and Claude Julien sold him that, but the guy has never scored more than 13 goals in a year, despite often being on the first line, whereas Bergeron has crossed 30 goals 6 times in his career and has 375 career goals to Danault's 55. Even Ryan O-Reilly has hit 20+ goals 6 times. Jordan Staal has hit 20 5 times and eclipsed Danault's 13 goals 9 times. The closest comparison for Danault is maybe Jean-Gabriel Pageau, and he too has passed the 13-goal mark 4 times in his career and has 103 career goals despite being the same age as Danault (and yes, he has100 more games but I don't think Danault's getting 50 goals in his next 100 games). Pageau is signed for what the Habs offered Danault, 6 years at 5M AAV, and he signed a year younger than Danault.

The bottom line is that most of the best two-way centers in the game right now far exceed Danault's offensive output and guys with similar career offensive output to Danault are making less than 5M a year. So he doesn't have much ground to stand on in terms of comparable players making more than that. If he wants to go and test his value, so be it, but he should remember what happened to the likes of Alex Kovalev and Mike Komisarek when they thought the grass would be greener on the other side.

From the Habs' perspective, I think they'll let Jake Evans take on that role of two-way center, though I also believe they'll try to find a veteran center to man the 4th line. Someone who's strong on draws, can play the PK, and provides some size to go on a line that likely features two of Poehling, Armia, Perry, or a different addition. Maybe an Erik Haula or a Brandon Sutter.

And speaking of different additions, I've thrown out former Hawks Brandon Saad and Nik Hjalmarsson as potential targets for Bergevin. But if Danault and Drouin are both gone next year, you can bet MB will be trying extra hard to sign a French Quebecer because he's not going to want to have to deal with the complaining about not having anyone on his roster. Maybe RHP makes the team. But I think he'll go after Perreault for the bottom 6 and I think he'll make a run at David Savard or maybe even Jason Demers for his defence.

Ultimately, I would not be surprised if the top 6 of Caufield-Suzuki-Anderson and Toffoli-Kotkaniemi-Gallagher is more or less set. Sure there could be a shake-up trade involving JK for Eichel or something to that effect, but I think the odds are that we won't see much change there. If Byron doesn't move, then I think Byron-Evans-Lehkonen remains our checking line. And so the tweaking likely occurs on the 4th line and on D. So a line of Perreault-Haula/Sutter-Armia would not surprise me in the least.

On D, I would not be surprised to see something along the lines of

Edmundson-Petry

Chiarot-Savard

Romanov-Demers (or Hjalmarsson-Romanov)

With Weber out and with the lack of organizational trust in young D men like Fleury or Brook, I think we can expect to see a couple of veterans added at the back end.

Phil Danault has apparently put his house up for sale tonight. Bargaining chip or has he made up his mind he's going?

don't think its a bargaining chip, I think he already has an idea of who is going to sign him, or maybe he's just thinking I'm upgrading even I do stay in montreal lol

Whether he stays or goes, he's going to be making more $$ next year so maybe he just wants the upgrade :4322:
