BigTed3
Bergevin screwed up. End of story. I don't mind the idea of offersheeting Aho, but he should have been more adept at protecting his own asset and not treating him like crap in a contract year. The club alienated JK by benching him and probably lowballing him on a contract the way MB has done over and over. That said, letting him sign with Carolina is a non-starter. You can hate paying out 6.1M all you want, but it would be even worse to let him walk, have Suzuki-Evans-Poehling-Paquette as your 4 centers, and all you get in a return is a low 1st rounder that has a 40-50% chance of even becoming an NHLer, never mind a good one. The Canes will be legit Cup contenders next year, their pick has little value. If it were a team like Buffalo or Ottawa or Arizona offersheeting and you had a reasonable chance at a lottery pick, then it becomes interesting to let him walk. Not for a low 1st rounder. You sign him. You figure out the rest after. Maybe you extend him long-term after this. Maybe you look at trading him in a year. But letting one of your top young players walk for a near-nothing return when your center depth is weak is just dumb.
H_T_L
The offer sheet on Aho was a joke in itself. Everybody knew the Canes would match that weak attempt by MB. All he accomplished was pissing off a fellow GM and placing a big target on his head for retribution. Karma as far as i'm concerned and another reason why this guy should not be the GM of the Habs. Look after your own house and stop letting your dog crap on my lawn. If MB really wanted Aho that badly then he should have gone all in on him and paid the full compensation it involved. You don't half ass an offer. If you can't handcuff the team then why bother? Just a pathetic bush league attempt by MB and Waddell just spit in his face. arpem-can
I don't know how he plays this year for an unjustified $6 mill on the Habs with a better centre in Suzuki making peanuts ( albeit and RFA ) but you just know Bergevin was going to offer KK way less on a 2 or 3 yr deal . KK just gained at least a years worth of negotiated salary in his bank account so it's a win win for him and maybe gets to play with fellow Finn Aho on a pretty good club ...and who can blame him ?...the Canes are thinking if Montreal keeps him that he'll still be available as a UFA next year anyway and they can sign him then ...pretty shrewd ...makes you wonder if KK's agent was in on this one . Assuming he continues to progress he'll be well about $6m next year anyway and everyone knows this is an offersheet overpayment so.. it is what it is. I don’t know man, I think every contract counts. Players/agents use one another absolutely. If we make Kotkaneimi our second highest paid forward it really complicates things. For sure Suzuki will probably want more, but how much more? Ideally Suzuki, Caufield re-sign in that 6-7 ballpark, and I think that’s reasonable. But KK at 6.1, that turns into a 7-8 ballpark real quick. It also sets a precedent for getting paid before potential is realized. What’s Romanov going to look for? He likely won’t be worth more than 4-5 by then, but if he expects to be paid based on potential he could easily push for 5+. It all spins out of control real quick. We have a good pay structure right now, aside from Price and Weber, we have a lot of good players signed in the 3-6 range (give or take), I just really think it would be in our interest to keep that in tact. I said earlier that it was a blessing. I’m going to walk that back, just a bit. I expected to sign him (2x2 seemed fair), and I was happy to see him continue to develop. But I’m not as high on him today as I was when we drafted him, and even then I had my concerns. I would have liked more in a trade than a 1st and a 3rd. But I would rather a 1st and a 3rd with a look at Poehling at #2 than a 6.1 KK. If it works we have Suzuki, Poehling, Evans, Perrault and Paquette at C, with cap room to make a change of need be. And we may have seen more from Kotkaneimi to this point than Poehling, but I’m not sold there’s much of a gap between them. And if it means saving 6.1 in cap space, plus a couple decent draft picks, that’s a gamble I’m willing to take. Your free to disagree, of course. I just find this fascinating and need to discuss it

jennifer_rocket
Oh yeah... This is disruptive for sure. I imagine Bergevin matches, but... Then probably turns around and trades him. Waddell outmaneuvering Bergevin on this one. Kind of funny, really. Those draft picks are gonna be ugly too. Carolina isn't gonna be a lottery team. jennifer_rocket
I also imagine Bergevin had been negotiating with Jesperi, but probably something like two years AAV $2-3 million. Carolina steps in and asks, "Would you like to receive $6 million in 2021-22?" and most young players are gonna say "Yes" to that.

Maybe yes, maybe no… Carolina is a good team, but their division is tough, the lost their goalie, their best defenceman and picked up Tony D. There’s no guarantee they make it out of the first round, and it’s not out of the question that they just barely miss the playoffs. It’s also not out of the question that they go to the finals. Who knows? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see
ChiLla
Sneaky little move from Waddell, kudos for getting his payback and of course this is fully on Bergevin. I don't really understand why Kotkaniemi would be fine with that symbolic signing bonus and the potential repercussions though, who's his agent and what's the story here? From a different perspective, this could be a blessing in disguise. I don't think there's a way we don't match, after losing Danault we simply can't afford to start the season with so little center depth. So we match and now need to use him like you'd use a 6M center, i.e. legitimately in a top 6 role. If he delivers, well, he'll be expensive to re-sign but we'd be negotiating with a young, proven center about to hit his prime. If he doesn't, we can still re-sign him for cheap (and he still has RFA status when the deal expires, right?). Not interested in the compensation we'd be getting here otherwise, Carolina is among the best teams in the East and their guys still have room to develop. tony5775
This is a tough one. Your gut tells you to let him go. But you know that is most likely the wrong decision. So what is the no trade rule if they match the deal?

We cant trade him for a year though, so it will be interesting to see. I think we match but i also think there's a chance we try to follow through with that trade with the Canes - see below. 1 hour ago, jennifer_rocket said: I also imagine Bergevin had been negotiating with Jesperi, but probably something like two years AAV $2-3 million. This puts him in a hugely advantageous situation. Its not just $6.1m this year. Next year has to be a min. qualifying offer of $6.1m too. 1 hour ago, jennifer_rocket said: Pierre Lebrun says Carolina tried to trade for Kotkaniemi over the past few days, so... I would assume if the Hurricanes were trying to make a move for JK, there was at least the framework of a deal in place. 22 minutes ago, ChiLla said: I don't really understand why Kotkaniemi would be fine with that symbolic signing bonus and the potential repercussions though, who's his agent and what's the story here? Windoe
Can't blame KK. $6m is his first big contract. Congratulations to KK. MB will have known this offer sheet was coming since Waddell would have been offering him low ball offers for KK saying, take it, or I'll offer sheet him. Likely something MB did to Waddell a few years ago with Aho. I think we should match the offer. Yes, its an overpayment by about double for this year and next. Yes, its a bad precedent for other young players on the team (don't want to have this go the way of Toronto). But I think $6.1m is manageable.
