Yes it was a fair deal if the player actually belonged to us. It was a weak attempt if you were serious about stealing him. I doubt any team in the League would have walked away from Aho for that deal.

well he said why, it was because they front loaded the deal. I think he was had by the agent to be honest, but I understand the reasoning

Trade him. Get a first and a high end D prospect.

you cant trade a player who signs an offer sheet for 1 full season.   He will be either a Montreal Canadien or a Carolina Hurricane for the upcoming season.

There is one possible caveat - we can still 'trade' him to Carolina (technically he's their property right now, we just have the ability to match) but presumably the deal would be for less than a 1st + 3rd because thats all they have to give up for him now.

The way to think about this is what can we get for KK a year from now, where we have to offer him 6 million just to keep his rights? I don't think we'll be able to trade him for more than a first and a third (and Carolina is an interesting team because they may not make the playoffs this year) so that's why I would just take the compensation now. If you think we can get more than that a year from now then why not just match, its one year? But I don't think we'll be able to get more for him at this point, so might as well take the first and third.

Ultimately what MB does is going to be based on whether they believe JK will have a $4.5-5m (or better) season.  Last year he was good value at under $1m.  This year he likely would have gotten $2.5-3m in a bridge.  If he has a breakout year I dont think its unreasonable for him to play at a $4-5m level. I think its incredibly unlikley he's a $6m value next year but if he's close, at his age, it is what it is.

As others have pointed out, we'd have to qualify him at $6.1m next year but that doesnt mean we couldnt offer him a 6 or 7 or 8 year deal at slightly less than that.

Its going to be interesting to see what MB does. I fully expect him to wait the week or close to it.  I think we will resign him but part of me would love to see what a mess Carolina would be if we didnt match. Aho at $8.4m  Kotkaniemi at $6.1 Staal at $6m Trochet at $4.75... thats roughly $26m for your centres, with only 1 being truly elite...

Complete reset on that draft. :D

I know right that is what I was thinking! I still don't understand how this makes Carolina any better? they should have spent the money and kept Hamilton! even if KK goes there and does much better than he did here they still lost a top tier D man and gained an unproven #2-# center. just does not make hockey sense! revenge sure but that is just stupid. I think I would let him walk and make a move with Arizona they want picks and we could flip them a player as well they have a good young center we could use and they seem to be cutting costs big time!

not just the $20 bonus but everything they pulled on twitter. Announcing it french, tweeting an uno reverse card. If they really want KK at that price they're doing everything right.

the Aho deal was a fair price for the player... I don't think 6 million for KK makes any sense. This was just retaliation and it makes THEM look stupid not Bergevin who was simply trying to improve his team within the rules

a first and a third for a guy who is likely going to be a highly overpaid 3rd line center (a good 3rd line center but not at that price). I'm happy with that trade, take it and move on. Go after Dvorak or someone else, but even if we add no one, I'm fine with letting KK go for the picks

Didn't the Canes follow the rules?

yes but the whole $20 signing bonus and everything on twitter, its clearly revenge for them. Plus, does Carolina REALLY want KK? Cause I am getting the strong impression they did it just to screw us and think we'll match. I certainly hope not

I don't see how they can NOT let KK go. KK does not deserve that salary and if they sign him to 6.1 mil, what does that mean for Suzuki next year? Letting him walk sends a message that if you sign and offer sheet as a negotiating tactic, be prepared to play for that team. Now, this may be what KK wants anyway, but there's no reason to believe NS doesn't want to be a Hab long term. The same goes for Caufield two years from now.

As for KK, he better have a good season regardless of where he ends up. If he plays like crap, or even mediocre really, he will likely find himself a UFA and taking much less.

You are correct, but I said trade him, and yes, they can make that trade with Carolina, offer sheet or not.

Agreed.  They have to make the trade with Carolina.  If they can't get a better deal than a first and a third, then just take the picks and scurry away with tail between legs.

And their goaltending? What's up with that?

For sure.  We can not match. It's the Habs own fault.  They can't go and compound the situation any further.

KK clearly wants out, and signed that contract with the subtle jabs willingly. His way of telling bergebin.........well, you know what I mean.

There is also a flip side to this, IF you don't match and let a good young center (albeit overpaid) walk then you potentially open yourself up for further OS's next year and the year after. You think a team won't offer Zuke 8-9 mil knowing that KK just got 6 and was allowed to walk? How about Caufield in 2 years time, think a team won't offer him 11 Mil? Letting him walk also sends the message that you are a pushover and willing to sacrifice your talent to save a little coin.
