The goaltender will enter the program voluntarily. He had been away from the team with what the team said was a non-COVID related illness.

The program “assists players and their families with mental health, substance abuse and other matters.”

He was already missing the team’s training camp after off-season knee surgery that saw him unprotected for the NHL Expansion Draft so the team could protect Jake Allen instead.

Since then, the team has also claimed Samuel Montembeault off waivers with the expectation he will backup Allen at the NHL level leaving Michael McNiven and Cayden Primeau to play for the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket.

Both GM Marc Bergevin and head coach Dominique Ducharme will address the media later this morning and we will update the article at that time.

The Canadiens play their final pre-season game tonight against the Ottawa Senators.

Well...didn't see this coming.

You can say that again.

First and foremost obviously we all wish Carey the best of luck. On the ice this changes things dramatically assuming he will be gone for a while.

What an odd 6-8 months. Drouin out with anxiety and mental issues.   Weber done for the year & possibly his career.  Price voluntarily enters assistance program... And thats not even taking into account things like the crazy Kotkaniemi offer sheet or the Mailloux debacle.

Im actually surprised Bergevin has any hair left.

Really hope it's a short term situation for Price. Hard to picture a guy like him dealing with anxiety issues as he seems so well grounded all the time.

On the hockey side of things,,,,, this is really beginning to look like a wash for this season.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said Price will miss a minimum of 30 days, adding he was confident the 34-year-old would return this season.

“I didn’t see it coming,” Bergevin said of learning Price would be taking a leave from the team. “It caught me off guard.”

A player entering the Player Assistance program is required to be out a minimum of 30 days. MB expects Price to return at some point this season so there is that.

With the defence MB has iced for this team this year,,,, 30 days could seem like an eternity. This division is already going to be the toughest to come out of. Without a healthy and on his game Price, we could be talking lottery pick by Christmas.

This off-season has really put into perspective that athletes, despite wealth, experience struggles outside of sport. Hopefully with Drouin coming forward and discussing his struggles, and Carey entering the player assistance program, we can all sort of cultivate more of an empathy for the experiences and struggles of other people. Wishing Carey the best!

Quite the off-season after reaching the finals, wow. We‘re easily a lottery team without Price and Weber IMO, hopefully at least Carey is able to come back soon.

He absolutely needs to take his time though, this isn’t to be taken lightly and living a healthy life will always be more important than sports no matter what. Get better soon, Carey!

Caught him so off guard that just a week ago he claimed Montembeault off waivers.  MB is just a tool and is totally transparent.

With that said I hope the best for CP and certainly hope to see him back on the ice soon

Im not sure if he's lying about this.  If he really knew Price was going to be out, wouldnt he have tried to grab someone better than SM?  Dude has like a 3.20 GAA career...

Really fortunate they decided to protect Allen at the expansion draft.

For sure, we are all human no matter how much fame/wealth/etc.  I really hope he gets himself back in a good spot asap.

I mean it obviously sucks for the team (just like Drouin missing the playoffs last year), but on the other hand it's nice to see this sort of thing taken seriously.  And in the NHL of all places - I mean I love hockey, but it's not traditionally been the most accepting venue for anyone who doesn't fit the mould of the "good ol' Canadian boy".

I guess it's a sign that mental health is being seen as more of a real issue in the world generally, but I'd imagine that having pro athletes take time off for mental as well as physical issues - and having that be "ok" - is probably a good thing for spreading that attitude even further.  I'm speaking in stereotypes here, but I'd imagine that your average worker/workplace's attitudes towards mental health issues are more likely to be changed by Carey Price than they are by listening to some doctor on the evening news.

Thoughts go out to

and his family. The amount of people this will impact and help by a guy of This magnitude coming out and saying he needs help will be astronomical! One of the best teammates and people I have ever played with. People including myself have no idea what

It’s like to be Carey price. The weight and pressure he has had to carry for so long is unimaginable and the way he has done it has been incredible. All the best and can’t wait to see

back when ready!
