Rookie of the Year

Recommended Posts

So just for fun I thought I would check out the rookie of the year standings, our boys are ranked 7th for Pitlick 10th for CC and Pezz is 29th! it did not occur to me that Pitlick was a rookie! At least CC  is gaining ground I feel he got screwed out of his shot at rookie of the year but he should be able to make it up to third or so with the pace he is on now first and second are about 20 points ahead that will be tough!

Yeah, Pitlick is 24 but only played a handful of games before this year.  When we got him from Minny I said that he was a case of a good player not getting playing time. I am not sure his scoring pace is sustainable but I think he's going to be a quality player for us for a while.

I am sure CC doesnt care about the Calder but is more upset the team so badly under DD.  I think that Moritz Seider, as a 20 year old rookie DMan scoaring 42 pts in 60 games is going to be tough to beat, although Bunting, Raymond and Zegras all have a few more points than him. If he keeps this up & finishes with 55 or 60 points as a rookie DMan i dont think any forward would have beaten him unless they had a 40 goal or 80 point season.  So even thought CC may well have ranked higher in voting if DD wasnt coach, I am not sure it was his trophy to lose.

Pezzetta is 49th in rookie scoring, not 29th...

Unpopular opinion of course and I‘m aware that I‘m totally biased but I‘m rooting for Seider, he‘s just crazy good given his age. At the beginning of the season I watched plenty of Red Wings hockey and I was shocked how mature he is given his age.

Yeah my #'s are off a bit I just went and rechecked odd I am not sure why as I checked just before my post? still it is great to see Pitlick and CC  climbing up the chart after such a tough start for CC! I am higher on Pitlick than some I like you feel he is going to be a good player but I think I feel he will produce at a good pace as well he has great hands and speed.

I agree completely and for the wings he's on the #1 PP & PK as a rookie.

I just love his signature move, how he really lays into people that try to punish him and they just bounce off of him. So strong on his skates, haven’t seen that in a while. Pronger maybe?

He‘s also a deceivingly strong puck carrier, really good skating and puck handling. There‘s no real weakness to his game I think. I wish we had a guy like him in the system. When the Wings picked him at #6 everyone (me included) was surprised, but they rightfully saw something in him early, good for them.

Bunting? Yeah, whatever

You probably all know what the kid is capable of, but I‘m a huge fan and these are snippets of what he did in the SHL against men before even making it to the NHL (he did play in the AHL before). I don’t think you see that very often from an 18-year old defenseman, I may be wrong but I honestly think he‘s going to be special:

I actually don't think that's an unpopular opinion at all. I also think he should be the winner and many in the media favor him as the front-runner right now too.

Hey,,,,haven't you guys been reading the news??? Bunting from the Leafs is guaranteed rookie of the year. :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Now that their rookie goaltender has won his first game,,,, it's just a matter of time before he's anointed the Vezina.

Bunting is a guy who's capitalized on playing with Matthews. It's kind of like all those guys who played with Crosby and scored goals but then sucked when they were traded or taken away from him. Or like Cheechoo winning a Rocket Richard trophy playing with Thornton and then falling off the face of the planet afterwards. Bunting is fine but he's not outstanding by any means.

Really? I honestly wasn't aware he's seen that way in NA (I do have limited media insight on this side of the pond). I thought the local outlets would favor 'skilled' forwards like Zegras or Raymond. Or, yes, potentially even 26-year old Bunting

NHL.com did a poll of their writers for the Calder and Seider came out on top by a wide margin. Raymond was 2nd, Zegras a close 3rd, Bunting 4th, and Lundell 5th.

Pierre Lebrun has stated that right now his vote would go to Seider as well, and he has an actual vote in the process I believe.

I would personally have Seider one and Zegras two. You're right that points do contribute to people's views, which is why Bunting has made it into the mix at all, but I also wonder if you're looking at a number of offensive forwards and only one D man in the mix, maybe some of those forwards split the vote among people who vote that way, whereas Seider gets all of the vote directed to D men or strong overall play.

Thanks for this, it's a little difficult to keep track and develop a general feel for how things are perceived overseas. I do have my European sources/platforms but they're not universally in tune with what's going on in NA and the different time zones aren't helping. I'm still a Habs fan first but I try to watch as much live hockey as I can. It keeps me up at night though, so it's not easy and my insight is still limited to the actual games (I don't get to see regular Canadian/American TV coverage over here). Plus hockey is mostly a niche sport in my country, which probably also explains why I'm so excited about Seider (and, of course, Draisaitl). Then there's Stützle but he's not quite there yet, albeit having all the tools.

Edit: Even though I'm clearly biased towards Seider, I think Zegras is an amazing hockey player and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the nod. The skill level is just unreal, there are probably less than a handful of players in the league who can keep up with his puck skills.

The thing with Seider is that so much of the Calder is looked at by points. He has the points as a defenseman yes. He also is Detroit's best overall defenseman. He kills penalties he logs big minutes. He has skill yes but it looks like Yszerman has found another Lindstrom. This kid thinks the game at a high level. As a rookie he has quickly become the Wings best defenseman. That includes all around defenseman. Which when Calder or Norris to much is focused on points and numbers alone. A steal at number 6.
