claremont
Talk about a swing and a miss - Bruins went for it giving up their 1st and 2nd round picks for each of the next 2 years. Somehow this team when you think they should be on the decline, finds a way to rebound. Taking a look at their roster on cap friendly and projecting their future as follows; 1) Current roster has 7 forwards, 6D, 1 G under contract with a dead cap hit of Mike Reilly of $1.875M. Their cap room is $10.6M however puckpedia says they have performance bonus hangover of $4.5M (likely Bergeron and Krecji) which is a significant impairment. Couple that with Swayman who is their goalie of the future who will probably get a minimum $4M contract. Kind of suggests Ullmark could be on the market? Trent Frederic their 3rd line centre (17g, 14a) is also an RFA, and will be due a bump in salary - maybe $2M or more 2) The only good news for the Bruins is their D is pretty solid - McAvoy, and Lindholm are locked up for 5 more years, Carlo for 4, with moderate cost LHD of Grzelcyk - $3.7M 1 year and Forbert - $3, and Jakub Zboril Cheap journeyman. Suspect they try to resign RHD Connor Clifton or a cheap UFA like Justin Holl. Secondly they have a trio of low cost forwards at $900k - $925K that absolutely have to make their roster - C - Beecher, LW Merkulov, RW Lysell, all who have reasonable development stats in the AHL 3) Bergeron at 38 and Krecji at 37 unlikely to comeback for low cost contracts It's very doubtful, the habs make any deal with the Bruins. First, the bruins don't have much in trade chips - prospects or picks and secondly they are a division rival. Boston appears to need a lot of help with their cap management. One would think Mike Reilly's contract of $3M has to be moved by giving up a draft pick like a 3rd round or lower level prospect like C - Brett Harrison, to avoid that dead cap hit. LW - Taylor Hall (32 - November with 2 more years at $6M for a 20 goal scorer and a 10 team NTC), and C - Charlie Coyle (31 - 16g, 20a with a 10 team NTC, with 3 more yuears at $5.25M) and the previously mentioned Ulmark (almost 30 - $5m for 2 more years with a16 team NTC) IMO will be difficult to move. I conclude that the Bruins are in a cap hell situation. Perhaps someone offer sheets a Trent Frederic to cause them some pain.

ramcharger440
Bruins must be a crap team getting knocked out in the first round like that......just goes to show you all you have to do is make the playoffs...LOL! and to think they were all conquering in the regular season too! Actually, I thought the Bruins played great in that series. Florida just played a little bit better. That should worry the Leafs, to some extent. jennifer_rocket
Let's also not forget Florida's record to end the season. I feel like they were crazy hot over the last month of the regular season. It feels like a case of Boston running up against a team that was playing really really well in that moment. Of course, Boston should not be getting eliminated by Florida, but... It is what it is. Does Bergeron retire?

I agree - Florida played with some desperation at the end and put quite the hot streak together at the right time. At first glance, Boston might have got a bit complacent, but Florida earned everything they achieved in this series. Goaltending hit, Montour stepped up etc. You just have to look at a player like Corey Perry who hung on too long with Tampa Bay, to suggest that Bergeron should probably retire despite putting up solid stats of 27g 31a. Does he have unfinished business with winning a cup in 2011, and finalists 2019, 2013 - probably not. Given the salary cap analysis I did above, tough to see the Bruins affording him even at $2M or less on a friendly contract. I will say he retires as a life long Bruin. They way his teammates acknowledged him while skating off the ice felt like a possible retirement coming. One of the best centers of the last 15-20 years. This 3rd line guy outpointed Dvorak who is at $4.45M which led to my comment. The offer sheet is unlikely but he has size - 6-3, 214 lb
